Because I served in the Marine Corps (just long enough to get benefits), I am eligible to be treated at any VA Medical Center. Luckily for me, the one in W. Palm is a full care, modern facility. My primary care "physician" isn't actually a doctor, he's a PA. I believe that stands for Physician's Assistant. I think he's as good as any doctor (better than some) and I like him a lot. Any problem he can't treat, he refers me to a specialty doctor. Most of the staff who works here are friendly and know what they're doing. I had to go to rehab for PT for a while and the therapists were very good. Everything I need can be taken care of right in this one building. Doctor, hospital, surgery (inpatient and out), X-rays, lab work, pharmacy. Like most anything service connected, there are waits at every juncture. I usually stop in the cafeteria while I'm waiting for a prescription to be filled. They've even got some pretty good food here. If you like to read, look for the book carts (usually in the lobby). The friends of somebody sell books pretty darn cheap.
Major drawback: Parking. It's not uncommon to have to park out in the field. There are shuttle busses that come along eventually.

The company I work for gives each of us employees a certificate for The HoneyBaked Ham Co. I was surprised that a lot of people were selling their gift certs this year. We got our Thanksgiving dinner at HoneyBaked last year and were very impressed with it. We got the ham along with a sweet potato casserole and green bean casserole. The ham was the best ham I've ever tasted. It came presliced and perfectly baked. It has a sweet crunchy coating that is like eating candy. The sweet potato casserole was great. Not like the marshmallow recipe you usually think of. This casserole was like whipped sweet potatoes and had some type of brown sugar mixed topping on it. The green bean casserole was like the traditional one with French fried onion rings on top but with a twist. It had red peppers and fresh sliced mushrooms mixed in. I've got my certificate and we're having this for Thanksgiving dinner again this year.

I got a rent-to-buy DVD player with surround sound from this store. When I picked up the equipment, they couldn't find the remote control but told me to call back the next day and they'd have it for me. After a month of calling, stopping by and getting nothing but promises, they finally found the remote. They messed up my paperwork and it took a temp worker from another Rent-A-Center location to straighten that out. The guys who work here remind me of used car salesmen - they'll promise you anything but never deliver. I've since switched my account to another store where the clerks are on the ball.

I originally bought a DVD player on a rent-to-own basis from a different Rent-A-Center location. They made errors in my paperwork, couldn't find the remote control, etc. so I was very unhappy with them. When I went in one day to make a payment, there was a guy working there temporarily from another store. He was able to correct the errors on my paperwork and answer all the questions I had. When I learned he worked at this store and that this store was closer to my home anyway, I decided to move my account here. I've been very happy with that decision.

Live Jai-Alai games, live poker and simulcast betting is what Dania Jai Alai has to offer. Dania Jai Alai has the only poker room in Florida (that I know of) which offers Double Flop Texas Hold'em. Texas Hold'em, 7-Card Stud and Omaha Hi/Lo are also played here. They offer quite a variety of tournaments, too - No Limit Texas Hold'em, Advanced Player Texas Hold'em, TURBO Texas Hold'em and mini tournaments. The poker room area is open, well lit, cheerful and smoke free - a very pleasant atmosphere.

Although small, the Palm Beach Zoo has a lot to offer. Begin your trek in Austral-Asia, where you'll see wallabies, kookaburras, kangaroos and a Bengal tiger. This is followed by the Florida exhibit, which houses animals native to Florida - flamingos, a Florida panther, roseate spoonbills, a bald eagle, scarlet ibis, otters, turtles, gators and coons. In the Tropics of the Americas you can see bush dogs, jaguars, frogs, bats, snakes, spiders, anteaters, emus, tapirs and fish. Throughout your journey are interesting architectural and landscape elements like a cypress boardwalk, saw mill and waterfalls which make things more adventuresome. There are also a carousel, gift shop and restaurant to enjoy.

Built on the New River by Frank Stranahan at the turn of the century, Stranahan House was originally a trading post. An early pioneer, Frank married Ivy Julia Cromartie, the area's first school teacher. Through the years Stranahan House was a post office, bank, town hall and restaurant as well as the Stranahans' home. Although Frank committed suicide during the Great Depression, Ivy remained in the house until her death in 1971. Today, Stranahan House has been restored to what it looked like in about 1913. It sits as the bridge between the new and modern River Walk and the historic district of Fort Lauderdale.
