Every Panera Bread I have been to has offered good food but sufferred from terrible service, and this was no exception. It bad enough and consistent enough from store to store that I have to wonder if they are training the staff to be slow.
If you don't mind the terrible service, the food is good. Personally, I look for good service when I dine out - I can have good food at home - and so I avoid Panera.

A McDonald's is a McDonald's, so how much variation can there be? At the Okemos McDonald's (the one on Okemos Rd), unfortunately, the answer is quite a bit. I have found this to be consistently one of the worst fast food restaurants in the area.
I work in an office park very close to this restaurant, and so it would be a natural place for my colleagues and I to grab a quick meal when we are in a hurry. There is, however, no such thing as a quick meal at this McDonald's. No matter what time of day you go, no matter how many employees are working, expect to wait. On one occaission I was the only person in the drive-through, there were no customers waiting inside, there were at least 5 or 6 employees working, and yet I still had to wait several minutes just to place my order!
Another time I ordered some milk and recieved a container that had expired 3 days previously. When I went inside to point this out, the workers discovered that ALL their milk was expired. How many other people drank this possibly bad milk before I pointed this out?
These are just a couple of the worst examples. At this McDonald's, slow service, mistakes in the order, and just generally bad food is par for the course. Go somewhere else.

I hesitate to say that San Fu is Ann Arbor's best Chinese restaurant -- there are several others which are also quite good, depending on your taste and mood -- but it is unquestionably one of the best. Service is invariably fast and polite, the food is reasonably priced, and it tastes very good. While "spicy" at some restaurants will barely warm your tongue, San Fu is willing to prepare their food very hot.

Cady's used to be a "Bar & Grill" restaurant with a fun atmosphere; it was a great place to go out with a group of friends. Unfortunately, over the last several years this restaurant has moved away from their burgers and beer roots and become more "upscale" - by which I mean fewer menu items I want and higher prices. My wife and I used to go to Cady's regularly on dates, but it's no longer a place we feel comfortable.

Stucchi's is quite simply the best ice cream in town. With countless other ice cream shops in town (both local and chains) Stucchi's continues to be the best and most popular ice cream. This location on South University tends not to have quite as good service as the State Street location, but they serve the same delicious ice cream.
Stucchi's also offers several very good soups in the winter, including a chicken noodle soup that almost tastes homemade. All the prices are quite fair.
Don't forget to stop by both locations on your birthday for a free scoop (at each) of your favorite flavor!

Stucchi's is quite simply the best ice cream in town. Even after Ben & Jerry's moved in right next door, the only time you ever see people in B & J's is when the Stucchi's line is out the door and some poor fool is in too much of a hurry to wait for really good ice cream! The ice cream cakes are also quite good, and they will make one on very short notice!

As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisp, my mind inevitably shifts to football. Over the years I have attended scores of football games at dozens of sites, and, since a renovation in the late 1990s, Commonwealth Stadium at the University of Kentucky is probably the nicest of all of them. The renovation "bowled in" the stadium, added luxury boxes over the end zones, and closed in the concourse. Although it's not the biggest stadium around, nor the most intimidating to opponents, Commonwealth Stadium is a great place to watch a game; every seat offers a good view of the field.

New York Pizza Depot (NYPD) is hands-down, Ann Arbor's best pizzaria. They offer a wide variety of toppings on their "specialty" pizzas, and usually have four to six different kinds available by the (very large) slice at meal times. They also offer excellent "garlic knots" and the milkshakes rival any in the area. NYPD also offers delivery, which is generally prompt.

Metzger's is a prime example of one of this area's oddities: great restaurants hidden in strip malls. Metzger's was originally located in downtown Ann Arbor, but when the original owner retired, his children weren't interested in continuing the restaurant. They eventually changed their minds, but the downtown location was already sold.
Unless you are sitting at a window or outside (which is still pleasant), it is easy to forget that you are in a strip mall. Metzger's is nicely decorated with various German posters and other items, and the service is consistently good (a rarity in Ann Arbor). They serve a wide variety of good German food and (of course) beer. Although the prices look high, they are fair considering that most entrees are large enough to share. Our favorite is the appetiser Spaetzel mit Kaese (spaetzel noodles with cheese).

Like many Lexingtonians, I have fond memories of childhood trips to the Rusty Scabbard. During a recent visit, the store lived up to my memories. It is still great place to find almost any kind of games, from popular to obscure board games, trading card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon, role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons or GURPS, and more. They have a wide variety of both new and used items at fair prices.
Perhaps as important, the Rusty Scabbard continues to be a social center for Lexington's gaming community, regularly hosting games and tournaments. In fact, it is rare to visit the store and not find some kind of game going on in the back!
