This comfortable, popular and reasonably priced Brentwood vegan hangout has a menu that includes some chicken, turkey and fish substitutes for culinary secularists. I opted for chicken with my black bean salad at lunch. Oddly enough, or perhaps not oddly, the chicken was a bit dry. All the other ingredients -- vegan -- were fresh and tasty, and made up for the chicken, which cost $2 extra. Don't tarry for lunch: By 12:30 p.m., it was waiting-room only.

But don't worry, the curry chicken, and the curry goat, among other dishes, are worth your venture into the relative culinary unknown. Port Royal doesn't have a liquor license, and brown bagging is not permitted at this time. But don't let that deter you from a delightful dining experience.

I like this theater because it generally features a couple of highly regarded indie movies that won't get billed at the plexes because they aren't backed with big advertising budgets. It got "Brokeback Mountain" for that reason. As it turned out, "Brokeback" has grossed more -- $83 million in the U.S. alone -- than most studio-backed movies. Thank goodness there are still a few theater chains left whose owners -- in the case of the Nuwilshire, Landmark -- that will take chances on movies that challenge Hollywood formulas, and keep playing them patiently as word of mouth builds.
