Ali is the most honest auto mechanic I know. I always go to him whenever I need an oil change, and the price is always right. I once went to EZ Lube and paid three times what he charges for an oil change on my Honda Civic.
I've gotten my brakes done here, and am extremely happy with them and haven't had any problems. I once took my car in because it was vibrating when I braked, and one of Ali's employees did something with my rotors (sorry, I'm not much of a car person) and didn't even charge me. Of course, part of this might have something to do with the fact that my old job refers a lot of business to Ali's shop, but still . . .
Another time I got an oil change and asked for a tire rotation. Ali told me that he couldn't rotate my tires since they really needed to be replaced. He said I could buy tires from him and have him install it, but advised it would be cheaper (!!) to just go to Costco.
Just this past weekend I took my car in for another oil change. Since my car has almost 50k miles on it, I asked Ali if there was any special services I needed to have done to it. Instead of taking advantage of my ignorance, he told me to bring my car back at 60k miles for the maintenance. I love Ali! Even though Burbank really isn't near me at all, I'll still keep going back to him.

The shop may be small, but I was able to find a lot of staples for my Filipino pantry in this grocery store on the west side! Lots of snacks that I grew up on as a kid, as well as many varieties of pancit, Silver Swan soy sauce, and even prepared foods packed in plastic containers that are ready to take home. Next time I make a cassava cake, I know where to go for my grated cassava!

99 Ranch is a large supermarket that I find very convenient because not only does it have a lot of Chinese products, but I can get groceries I use when I prepare Filipino foods as well, like banana sauce, grated cassava, and fish sauce (I forgot the brand, but it's a Filipino brand that my mom always uses that I recognize by the design of the label). On top of that, the bakery section has pan de sal and monay, as well as a really delicious taro bread.
I enjoy cooking in many different cuisines, so it's nice to be able to get kim chee, pancit bihon noodles, mochi, udon noodle soup mix, and curry paste (Japanese and Thai) all in one place in the valley!

I actually wasn't expecting anything much since this is located in the food court of Mitsuwa, a Japanese grocery store. I'm glad I was wrong! The broth was strong and delicious, the ramen noodles were slightly chewy, and my set came with a bowl of rice topped with large spheres of salty salmon roe. I liked this place so much I came again the next day! As a bonus, I picked up some pastries at the attached supermarket when I was done.
Cash only.

Pho So 1 is located in a strip mall about 2 doors down from 99 Ranch. It's quite popular with the lunchtime crowd - the one time I tried to dine in during lunch, I ended up having to share a table with 4 other people, none of whom appeared to know each other. Now I just order my food to carry out. Problem solved!
Food comes out very quickly. I'm a big fan of the bun cha gio (rice vermicelli with egg rolls), and the pho is delicious. The prices are definitely right as well - dinner for two, including appetizers and an avocado milkshake (my favorite!) for me, still came out to under $20. I will definitely go here again and again.

I hadn't cut my hair in months since the last stylist that I really liked picked up and moved to Hawaii. Thank goodness I found Lynn, who owns NY2LA! Even though all I needed was a trim, she really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. I will definitely go back, and I'm pleased that I finally found a stylist that I like.

My knowledge of Ethiopian cuisine is pretty limited. Chef Seble served up some of the tastiest vegetarian food that I, a die-hard meat-eater, have ever put in my mouth. She was also very helpful and answered my questions (and even recommended I try the Ethiopian iced tea, which her mother had sent over to her). I ordered the vegetarian combination. The split lentil stew was my favorite! Also loved the injera (the flat bread), and I scarfed down most of the injera that my food was lying on, just to get every last bit of sauces.
Not all the food is vegetarian, of course. There are plenty of meat dishes that I plan to try on my next visit. Website is here: http://www.fassicarestaurant.com/index.html

I had really high hopes for BottleRock. I wandered in one Saturday afternoon and decided to try out their wine tasting, which was $10. The woman who was pouring everyone's tastes came by and gave me my first wine. When I asked her a few questions about the wine, she read me what was on the label. I could have done that myself.
I was amused to see that she was also drinking as she worked, but my amusement turned to annoyance when I realized she seemed to have forgotten about me. After twenty minutes I was able to flag someone down to send her over to me with the next taste.
Since the woman was busy drinking, I asked another man, who apparently was working a different part of the room, to pour for us. It took me over an hour to get all 4 wines tasted because it was so difficult to get any service, and the place wasn't even busy. The only thing that was busy was the woman, who was too busy drinking!
I was so disgusted that I left a quarter for a tip.
If you do go here, your best bet is to just buy a bottle of wine so you won't have to depend on the staff to help you out any further.

I switched primary care physicians after dealing with the nightmare that was Dr. Cheong Choi and his staff, and I was very pleased to find Dr. Elgourt. She really took the time to answer all of my questions and didn't make me feel rushed at all. Also, my wait time in the office was only about 20 minutes, which is a nice change since I often wait an hour for other doctors.
The only drawback is the receptionist, who wasn't very helpful at all. Dr. Elgourt wanted me to schedule a physical, and so I have to get some blood tests done in the lab that is 2 doors down from her office. After I left her office, I called back to see what the hours were for the lab. The receptionist didn't know. So I asked her if she had the phone number for the lab, and she said she didn't have it. She told me to call 411 (this is for the lab that was 2 doors down from her!), so I asked her what the name of the lab was, but surprise, surprise, she didn't know that either. Luckily for me, one of my co-workers actually used to work for the lab, so I was able to find out the name and look it up on the internet.
So all in all, Dr. Elgourt was great, but she needs to hire more competent staff.

I ordered a beef chimichanga, which turned out to be the perfect size for me, because when I saw my boyfriend's monstrous-looking burrito (don't get me wrong, it was very delicious, but it was humongous!), I started to get a bit nervous. The chimichanga was about half the size, and nice and crisp. Prices were great, and my margarita was quite an eye-opener. I will definitely go back again! This restaurant is cash only, by the way - fyi in case you're used to using plastic like I am. I was also very pleased with the attentive and friendly staff.
