If you like water parks and nice hotels, visit the Great Wolf Lodge. The one I went to was in Scot Run, Pennsylvania. It is especially nice if you have kids. It is a gigantic place with tons of rooms, including quite large family rooms. It has an indoor water park, so you can enjoy that type of thing all year round. There are activities for kids as well as restaurants and spas for the adults. You can not only enjoy what the hotel has to offer, but you are in the Pocono mountains, so there are lots of other attractions in the area, both in winter and summer.

Thomasโs Diner is a popular local diner which specializes in breakfast food. Breakfasts are available all day. There are the usual egg combos, as well as pancakes, French toast, waffles, and frittatas. Some come right to the table in large frying pans. The food is good and the atmosphere is excellentโit is an old-fashioned diner with booths and a counter. It has its own parking lot. The prices are reasonable.
Thomasโ is also crowded for lunch, since it is in a commercial area. Although the menu is not as varied as the typical large Greek diner, there are a variety of sandwiches and other entrรฉes. I have even seen people order things that are not on the menuโobviously there are a lot of โregularsโ, which is a good recommendation.

I was sent to this branch of the Modellโs chain by a salesperson in the store in Douglaston. Modellโs is a chain of sporting goods stores with a reputation for good prices. I have gone to different branches of this chain for many years and have been quite happy with the variety and prices. While it is not a really big store, it has equipment for most popular sports, some clothing, shoes and socks, etc. There is also camping equipment.
I went to the store in Douglaston to get prepared for a half-marathon walk I was training for. I really could not find a proper pair of shoes in my size, nor walking socks in the right size. The salesgirl said that what I was looking for was rather specialized and that I should go to one of their larger stores. Well, the College Point store was one of the larger stores.
Sure enough, I found exactly what I was looking for. Not only did I get the shoes I wanted in my size, but I even managed to get them in black, which are hard to find.
I would suggest trying Modellโs first when looking for this type of merchandise, since their prices are usually a little better than other chains like the Sports Authority or Dickโs. Modellโs also has a shopperโs cardโafter a certain number of points, you get something off. My teenaged boys insist that it is the best place to buy shoes.

I just saw the most entertaining free show! It may not be for everyone, but I sure had a good time. I say that it may not be for everyone, first, because not everyone likes the circus, and second, because this is a gay circus. Some of the โladiesโ in beaded gowns are men, and vice versa. But all the entertainers, both circus performers, and the band, are quite talented, which is what counts.
But Circus Amok is not only a circus show. It is also a play in 10 acts about immigration. I imagine that is how they get some money to put on free shows in the parks around New York City. It is a small troupe and the show is in one ring. Spectators sit on a tarp right at ringside. It is not often you get an opportunity like that. I am just sorry that not more people know about it because it is worth seeing. I liked it so much that I donated my transportation money and had to walk home!

My local Queensborough Public Library is closed for renovation for a few months, so I went to the Central Library the other day. I had not been there for many years, and was pleasantly surprised when I went. Of course, the Central Library is larger than the local branches and has many more books and activities. Since the last time I had been there, they have opened a gift shop which has some nice and reasonably-priced gifts which help the library get needed funds.
I arrived at 3:30 or so, and was happy to find the place full of peopleโnot only kids using the library after school, but lots of adults too. There were a lot of computers, so there were quite a few that were not occupied. In some of the branches, it is hard to get to use a computer in the afternoons. There seemed to be enough employees to answer whatever questions a user might have.
One thing which I liked is the numerous stands near the entrance which held popular categories of booksโthey have them in all the Queens libraries, but there were many more of them in Jamaica. There were several with all kinds of sheet music, some with books about quilting, others with clip art, both printed and for computers. This is just to mention very few, but there were many.
In short, this is an interesting, vibrant place. Try it out. You can now borrow 50 items with a free library card. What are you waiting for?

This is part of a chain of restaurants which caters to the Yuppie crowd. It has a bar and features casual dining. This particular Fridays is located in Westbury, near the Roosevelt Field mall and the Fortunoff mall, so it is convenient for those shopping in the area. It has ample parking. The dรฉcor is quite nice since the building and inside have just been remodeled. On a personal note, the decoration, which looks like a glass of soda to me, that has become the new symbol of Fridayโs, is absurd! I liked the old one better.
When I ate at this Fridayโs the food was good, the prices were moderate, the restaurant was clean, and the help was good. You will not get real gourmet food here, but you will know what to expect, and should be pleased.

And rightfully so. My family loves to go there for his barbeque feast. It is costly, but serves the four of us for two days. When you order it, they place a special holder on the table. The feast comes on a standard-sized garbage can cover. It is just full of barbequed meats, corn, fried potatoes, corn muffins, cole slaw and baked beans. Each table has a holder made of plumbing pipes that holds a whole roll of paper towels, which are the napkins. Not only is the food good, but the whole thing is fun. There is a holder on the table too, which has about 8 kinds of barbeque sauce to put on the food.
There is a regular menu too, and a lunch menu which is quite reasonable. There is also a take-out area.

There is so much you can do there. Of course, you can shop--although you need to be a member and you have to buy large size packages. But aside from the obvious, there are other advantages to spending a few hours there.
One nice thing they have is demos of some of the food products they sell. Not only are they tasty, but they introduce you to things you might never try if you had to buy a large package of it. Who is going to buy a $10 package just to get it home and find you don't like it?
Then, if you are still hungry, you can go to the little "restaurant" and have a quick meal. There is pizza, hot dogs with a drink for $1.50!!, frozen yogurt, and other food. It is quite economical and good.
I realize that this is not a place for everyone given the membership fee, and the size of the product packages, but I love it, and obviously, so do many other people because it is always crowded.
I must add that they carry all kinds of merchandise, from soup to nuts, to furniture, appliances, eye glasses, etc. etc. You can also buy online.

I had shopped at the The Source mall a number of years ago. They had a Rainforest Cafe that my little children and their friends loved. That closed, and I didn't like too many of the stores that were left, so I didn't go back for a long time.
I had reason to go back a couple of weeks ago, and was impressed with the changes. There are new restaurants and stores. One new store that I visited is Steve and Barrys, a clothing store. It is really aimed at college-aged kids, but has clothes for little kids through adults. Everything was $6.98--from underwear to winter coats. I got something for everyone in the family, and some gifts for others as well.
I entered a Lindt chocolate store which was having a warehouse sale. My whole refrigerator is full of chocolate because it was too cheap to pass up. (Which will send me back to Steve and Barrys to get new, larger clothes).
If you have not been to this mall, or haven't been there lately, try it.
