Babeland is awesome. Not only is it a terrific company that is actually owned by women. Babeland is fairly progressive and supportive to the communities it represents. Babeland...

Toys in Babeland is okay, not as good as what I'm used to 7/24/2006

I found it to be way too small of a store. Not only small because it doesn't have a large selection of toys and goods, but it's really cramped and there are always a lot of people inside. I ended up getting a really cool thick spiked collar, something I couldn't seem to find in New Hampshire anywhere. My friend got the biggest dildo I've ever seen. This place was all young and hip and clean looking. Personally I prefer the dark, dingy, sticky perverted shops with a wider selection of products. more

Toyland for adults 3/24/2006

Not suitable for kids but very suitable for adults. Every kind of sex toy you could think of or ever heard about on Sex and the City they have. Upon entering you walk down this long hallway into a bright pink room filled with after hour play things and sex tapes and lots and lots of books including the Karma Sutra. The staff is very friendly and informative. There are a bunch of fliers and magazines to take home about sex and workshops they offers so check those out. Check Bust magazine for coupons to their online store. more

For a adult entertainment store, is the last word you would use to describe this place. Located on a relatively quiet place, you would never know what was behind the close door. Selection of adult toys is tastefully displayed. Lots of books are available on variety of subjects. Not really a hardcore type of store, more about the fun and pleasure that couples can have when they introduce a few adult toys into life. more

A sex (toy) store for all 9/22/2005

This is now called just Babeland, not Toys in Babeland, and the Lower East Side store was the first in NYC. The store began in Seattle, I believe, and its basic orientation is to women, straight and gay, but guys are welcome too. The vibe is sex-positive, nonjudgmental, and they have all manner of books, videos, toys, lubes. They also offer periodic classes in techniques, but I swear, I only went for the condom selection. Needless to say, the place is clean and the staff friendly. more

A Real Pleasure 8/21/2005

I heard about this place and dragged my girlfriend here because I was afraid to go it alone! Fortunately, once we got there, I felt so comfortable that I started perusing the shelves of dildos all by myself while my girlfriend looked at the dirty magazines. There aren’t any dirty old men walking around or anyone glaring at you. The salesgirls are friendly and knowledgeable. You can test the vibrators and many of the items have labels that explain how they work. This was a really fun time and I’m happy with my purchase! more

Toys in Babeland - serious toys for seriously fun adults 8/20/2005

There's no place else like this (except, perhaps, the Mercer Street location) TiB is discrete and earnest. Matter-of-fact staff wait on educated consumers. There is little gawking at novelties here, because the merchandise is not for novetly, it is for pleasurable use. An extensive array of vibrators from the tiny eggs and bees to the popular and somewhat awkward Rabbit. Nice lubes and massage oils. My favorite find: tins of soy candles with sexy scents (such as Spice and Sauna) for just $8 each. You burn one for a few minutes, then blow it out and drip the still-hot melted soy wax on your loved one for a delicious massage "oil." The silicone sleeves could make men swear off of their ordinary old hands forever. Check out their web site ( http://www.babeland.com ) for more details. But feel free to visit one of their stores and inspect the wares in person. This woman-owned company has set everything up nicely to make you feel comfortable. more

Yes! Yes! Yes! 8/20/2005

You can't do any better than this in New York City for your sex in the city, with the full range of adult toys for men, women, and in between. All condoms with out the dreaded Nonoxynol 9 spermicide, and one of the few places you can find latex free acrylic condoms (Avanti) and Lamb skin condoms. Totally great helpful attitude too. more

My favorite adult store ever! 7/31/2005

From walking in and being approached by an innocent looking girl holding a gigantic vibrator and asking if she could show me how it felt - to the amazing selection that I encountered when all I asked for was lube... I was in heaven! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and most of all - very funny! I was relaxed and at ease as I shopped and wasn't pressured into anything that I truly didn't want to purchase. The prices are a little high, but the quality of the merchandise is unsurpassed. My only gripe would be that they wouldn't allow me in with my newborn son - who was asleep and in his carseat covered by a blanket! They said it was the law - and he was a minor! I can laugh in retrospect but I can't hold it against them as it is the policy everywhere! more

Love Thy Neighbor, and Thyself, Better 7/26/2005

Toys in Babeland is often described as a "women friendly" sex toy boutique, but it's really a "person friendly" place. And it's a boutique, not a smut shop. Products range from adult toys and condoms, to erotica and sex how-to manuals, to scented lotions and bubble bath. The store is clean, brightly lit, and you can take your time browsing through the "floor models" of the products. The staff is well trained to both answer questions and keep the atmosphere accepting and comfortable, whether you're a seasoned shopper or can't stop giggling. I also recommend their video rental club. Again, staff members are happy to recommend a selection based on your taste, and the movies are not your typical "porn", with featured women directed movies, instructional videos, and even sci-fi! Extra bonus: they stock batteries ;), and always turn on items requiring them to make sure they work before you leave (there's also a fair return policy for defective, unused items) Not comfortable browsing the store? Visit the website to have products discreetly sent to your home. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
The Lower East Side's Babeland is less a boutique and more a sex-positive clubhouse. Cute hand-written signs describe the wide array of mostly women-oriented products, and the atmosphere is so laid-back, you'll wonder why everyone in the city isn't spending their Sunday afternoon chilling to Sleater-Kinney on the sound system.

    The Goods
Toys distinguishes itself from other sex toy vendors by focusing not only on hawking merchandise, but also on offering sound sex education. The store offers a variety of classes, including an introduction to sex toys class that's available in English, American Sign Language and Spanish. There's also a full library of books on all things related to sexuality.
