The New York Public Library is an amazing untapped resource. All you need is a library card and a dream and you can watch, listen, and learn for free! The best part is that you can log on to your account online and request almost any book, movie, or music and it will be sent to the branch nearest to you. It's so cool! And then you get a little slip in the mail telling you that your book or movie has arrived and you pick it up and you don't have to pay anything!

I adore the Pierpont. I once had the extreme pleasure of a special tour and the chance to see some extremely rare books and I’ve been hooked ever since. They have great exhibits that change fairly frequently and it’s not too big, so perfect for a hour or two of relaxation. Plus, they have a great restaurant in an enclosed garden (fabulous in the winter) that is just perfect for brunch.
P.S. It's closed until spring 2006, but don't let that deter you. The web site lists where the collection can be seen at other museums and spring isn't that far away.

Besides having a wide choice of research channels to pursue, there is also a whole cadre of professionals who can help you locate whatever information you are looking for. There are wonderful historic documents, and of course the web for all sorts of searches. The building itself is also worthy of some time to explore - inside will take you back to the days of old New York. Located in the heart of midtown - this is a nice stopping place between shopping or errands

More
The Morgan Library & Museum was the home of Pierpont Morgan until his death in 1913. His library (a big favorite of his) was built from 1902-1906.
The Library & Museum now hold one of the world's greatest collections of artistic, literary, musical, and historical works. Depending on what is on display from the vast collection, you may see original works by Mozart and Beethoven, drawings by Rembrandt and Rubens, medieval and Renaissance works, one of three Gutenberg Bibles, literary manuscripts of Dickens and Twain, and five-thousand-year-old Near Eastern carvings. There are several computer stations in the center of the museum that allow visitors to virtually tour the collection.
On my recent visit, I was thrilled by the Saul Steinberg exhibit (entitled ILLUMINATIONS). Mr. Steinberg was a longetime illustrator at The New Yorker - although I knew this, I was shocked by how many of his drawings I was familiar with from other sources.
$12 admission.

A lovely museum in one of New York's great old mansions, the Cooper-hewitt focuses largely on industrial design. I've seen exhibits there on teh evolution of the keyboard as well as the telephone. If you like the beauty of every day objects and blieves the folks at Apple are artists this is the museum for you. Even if that's not your scene, you should absolutely check it out for the gorgeousnes of the building. They've retained enough of the original innards of the mansion (and carpets that run very properly only down the center of stairs) that you can easily imagine how life once was here.

This is not a good library. It is not very big and does not contain that many books. The neighborhood is very dangerous as well. I was almost mugged once after leaving the library. This is not a good neighborhood to be.
This is also known as Seward Park Library since it is right next to Seward Park. The park smells like it's name. Putting a library there is a big mistake, it is useless.
