More
Since this is the beta, I will be shameless about being nominating Acumen Fund as the first non-profit rated in NYC, but humble enough to say we are far from perfect... (but not too far). We do interesting and innovative work, raising philanthropic capital in the US and lending or investing equity overseas to provide "venture capital for the poor" or the 4 billion people on the planet who make less than $4/day. Innovative model at the cusp of proving that we can really crack the code on design, pricing, marketing and distribution of essential goods and services to the poor that don't depend on development assistance.

More
The Columbia and Barnard Club shares space in the Princeton Club instead of having a separate club of their own. The membership fees are extremely high, especially considering that it is membership to another school's club! The amenities offered are nice but certainly not worth the price. You would be better off joining a health club with better facilities than paying for the Columbia club.

New York Comedy club has great comedians and plenty of alchohol--an excellent combination. So if you're going there to laugh, you're in the right place.
If you're going there to use a clean bathroom or to have more than 3 centimeters of personal space between you and your fellow customers, you might want to try another club.
Drinks are a little pricey, but probably usual for NYC. And the cover ranges from $8-$12 depending on when you go.

More
This used book shop in the basement of the Webster Library is non profit and helps support the local public library branches. Remarkably and with great effort by the diligent staff, the books are all arranged neatly by category - mystery, romance, history, science fiction, science, travel etc. Most of the books are used and can be purchased for $1 - $2 each. There are hardcovers and paperbacks as well as VHS tapes. There are also children's books, review books, cookbooks, etc. Feel free to browse. The staff are all volunteers of the Friends oF Webster Library and very friendly and helpful. There is usually great music overhead to set the tone. They also readily take donations.

More
I’m not particularly religious, but I do consider myself a spiritual person and have a fondness for Episcopalian-ism because it was my great-grandmother’s faith. St. Mark’s is the epitome of the ideal Episcopal church, in my opinion, even if it is not the most traditional. It is welcoming to everyone: young and old, male and female, gay and straight, of all races and all religions. It even welcomes animals once a year during its traditional blessing. I don't usually attend sermons (again, not really religious) but when I have, I've felt absolutely welcome.
St. Mark’s is one of the oldest churches in New York, but it is also so much more. It is an arts and social action center. It is the home of The Poetry Project (http://www.poetryproject.com ) and The Danspace Project (http://www.danspaceproject.org ). It is also a member of United for Peace (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/ ). More than any other church I've ever seen, I can say that St. Mark's reflects and benefits all that is good in its community.

There’s a block on Thompson that makes for a mini chess-district. Of the shops along that block, this one’s my favorite to walk by. It has the more silly or fantastical boards that are fun to look at, while the others are probably the better places to shop. It’s also where one drunken evening I decided to spend some cash on my beautiful glass board instead of eating sushi.

More
Are you from out of town and coming to NYC for medical treatment for yourself or a loved one? Hotels are expensive but there is a warm and caring place for you to stay at a reasonable price. At Miracle House, (about $40/night, sliding scale also available), you will stay in your own private clean safe bedroom in an apartment that you share with other guests who will have their own room. There is free breakfast - (interestingly paid for by a grant from Philip Morris, the cigarette company) and some free dinners. Miracle House needs a referral from a social worker or your doctor and you should try to call ahead as much as possible as space fills up quickly. One caveat - they will not accept you if you come alone, caregiver or family member needs to accompany you.

More
You can find out about particular cancers, treatment, and join support groups for patients or caregivers. A reliable trustworthy source of cancer related information. You can also get information about financial aid and get help from Cancer Care social workers who can help you apply for patient aid to help you pay for transportation and medical costs. They also have teleconferences where you can find the latest research as well as basic information on blood tests, etc. You can call in questions at the end and even listen to them over your computer. You can also order their booklet that has a wealth of information on national and local organizations that can help you. There is a separate one for those in NJ.
