An import from England, the Terrance Conran shop is located under the Queensboro bridge. It contains two levels of housewares and furniture and interesting gifts. My husband, whom I generally think has little interest in aesthetics and is extremely frugal (bordering on cheap), was almost lured into buying a $1500 minidesk. The aesthetic is clean, modern, dramatic. I have also found cool, inexpensive toys and other knick knacks that make for different stocking stuffers or birthday presents. Sometimes I wish I had had the foresight to have registered here for my wedding, but that wouldn't have been practical and I am generally nothing if not practical......

this place capitalizes on the fact that there isn't much competition in manhattan for household goods (although now that there's a bed bath and beyond a couple of blocks away maybe that will change) by trippling or even quadroupling the prices for everything it carried. ridiculously cramped little aisles, limited (at best) selection, and totally obnoxious salespeople (although that might be par for the new york course).

The Terrance Conran shop is a place not only for the rich among us. Yes, a chair can cost $1000 in this store, but you don't pay for looking. This place has some of the best designs I've ever seen. From sophisticated toys to elaborated furniture. I would say that this is a taste of the real upscale New York and is an impressive landmark for New Yorkers and even tourists.

Throw out the clock, put on your smocks and paint to your heart's (or wallet's) content.
"Our Name is Mud," is a kids-friendly, great for all ages, pottery paint bar, You are the one to create and design your own housewares! Over 100 items, you select your pottery of choice, and then let your imagination take over.
For the novice, they also offer paint pencils, stencils, sponges, and books to help unleash the creative you! If you don't like the design, don't worry, you can easily wash it all off and start over!
Ceramics are dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe, and all materials are nontoxic.
They also have adults only, late nights. Offered on Thursdays and Fridays after 5pm, no kids, food and alcohol are allowed. So one can have their own wine and cheese party!
The staff who run the place are enthusiastic, friendly, and very helpful. They know a thing or two about wines too. This place is awesome.
Though they have four locations, only three (Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Village) are actual paint bars.
Pieces are ready for pick-up a week later.
In addition to the cost of the pottery, they charge $5 by the half hour.
Great place to get reconnected with the child in you!

Think Twice Before Moving with Big John's Moving

More
My wife and I had used Big John's moving for six moves over the years. Their moving teams, packers and storage people were great. Our problem came about in our last move. While finishing construciton on our new apartment we stored our furniture for many months with Big John's. When we moved in, an antique desk was badly water damaged. Apparently the desk, wrapped in a moving blanket was left in the rain while moving out of our previous apartment. The desk had been stored in the wet blanket for months, resulting in mold, veneer damage and cracking.
Because of our previous experience with Big John's moving people we chaulked it up to "mistakes will happen". We elected to have the desk repaired under the insurance we had purchased from Big John's for the move. Six months later the desk has not been repaired. Big John's disclaims any responsibility for getting the desk repaired and "Steve" (the dope who has been handling the problem) claims there is nothing he can do. No amount of calling, cajoling or complaining helps. Big John's has washed their hands of the matter. The furniture repair shop (selected by Big John's) won't answer our calls and has used the same excuse several time to explain the delay.
Think twice about using Big John's: the movers are great, but their front-office people simply do not care about customers.

The idea of Home depot in manhattan seems a little weird to me, after all, most of us rent -- home improvement projects just aren't really an option. That said, I've found this store comes in very handy on a number of counts. First, their small appliances aisle has a much better selection (with a better price range) than the nearby Best Buy -- if you're looking for a coffee maker, this is the place to go. Secondly, the folks in the paint department were very helpful when it came time to figure out which shade of white to use to match the walls (and cover scuffs) when moving out of an apartment. Finally, they have good home decorating supplies -- my curtains and rods are from there, and they have a great selection of rugs.

When you're looking for a few new pieces in our wardrobe for a weekend in the Hamptons or the Jersey shore - this is a good place to check out. They have a wide range of styles and generous cut sizes, and alot of the summer items are already starting to be put on sale. They have a catalog and are on-line, but it's best if you can get into a store to try on a few pieces you might normaly pass by - but when you look at yourself - you realize it actually is pretty nice! Don't be afraid to try on colors - this hot humid summer is all about getting out of black!

More
I visited this store in my search to buy chocolate molds for a baby shower. The aisles are lined with boxes of different types of molds separated by category. A bit messy and cluttered, however they did have about 20 different baby shower themed molds. They have an amazing array of both fun and professional baking supplies. I was also able to find very affordable tiered dessert platters. The staff is knowledgeable, however it tends to get busy so if you see a staff member speak now of forever hold your peace (of cake)!
