Metal, metal, and more metal... Oh, and some casters and tape and tools, all in the middle of touristy canal street. They will cut the chains for you, and even crimp aircraft cable, but more likely if you're a lovely lady. It is a busy place so don't expect to get out of there quickly.

Want to find the latest hip music and the hipsters (some may call them trendwads) to go with it? Other music has all the latest in indie music and electronica crammed into a little space. They're even supposed to have in store band appearances, which I have trouble believing they can do in such a small space. There is a bit of attitude free with your purchase, but the prices are reasonable.

The place to go in Willimasburg for all your computer (especially if you usa a Mac), audio, cable, and electronics needs. Support the local kids and avoid that Radio Smack that's sweeping the nation. Mikey's has everything from cheap adapters to high end gold-plated musicians cables and the staff uses all this stuff so they know it.

A cute little pet food shop tucked in on 7th street in the East Village. Seems like a hold out from the old East Village, but I hope they stay there since they have good prices, cute store cats, and very friendly service. Don't go looking for an actual pet here though- it's only food and pet toys.

A thrift store slightly hidden in the West Village next to Washington Square park that's chock full of hidden treasures. Whereas most thrift stores are completely picked over in New York, this place seems to have somehow stayed somewhat undiscovered. Make sure to check up at the front cause some of the best finds are there, and just ask the friendly staff if you can't find anything.

This place in SOHO has plenty of classes and lectures to offer in anything new agey at all. There are yoga, herb, meditation, and self help classes that seem to cover all the spiritual topics. They also run a great Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) vegetable box pick up in the summer and fall that has delicious produce.

You can find almost any form of metal needed for jewelry and decorating here- chains, sheets, dowels, rods, ball bearings ("it's all ball bearings these days!"), and all kinds of metal- nickel, steel, copper, iron, bronze, etc. The service is very helpful, but just make sure you know exactly what you want before you get chain cut, cause once it's cut you gotta pay for it!

A bit off the beaten track of Chinatown hidden under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, but this place has all the South East Asian food goodies you might need like Mae Sri curry pastes, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and most importantly palm sugar (who can ever get enough of that?). Very spacious (as these markets go) and friendly staff.
