I was speechless and thrilled when MAX, my favorite Italian from Avenue B, opened their uptown outpost, MAX Soha, convenient to both my home and work. I still love MAX... when I want to deal with it (its popularity, and occasionally the snooty attitude of its hostesses, followed it uptown).
So when Pisticci, the new joint, opened near us, we were skeptical. Could it live up to MAX? The answer is: no, but that's not what it's there for.
Pisticci is a cozy basement space with a cute sidewalk cafe at street level. The menu has reliable standbys (fettucine with wild mushrooms, chicken grilled in sage served under a bed of arugula, polenta with meatballs, to name a few), some dishes that are trying to compete with its more esteemed competition a few blocks away (like the pasta with lamb ragu, which is done much better at MAX), but the specials can really knock your socks off. The other night, for example, I had sauteed chicken with artichoke hearts, and it was exceptional.
We've brought our parents (tough restaurant customers, and none of them enamored of MAX) several times and they always love it. We've come with small kids and it's never a problem.
It's not exactly on the beaten path, but if you find yourself near Grant's Tomb with an appetite, it's the best place I can think of.

Both cheaper and tastier than most of its Koreatown neighbors. Not the place if your craving is Korean BBQ, but perhaps the best choice for anything else. Certainly the best value.
We always get the pajung, jaeyuk bokum, and bul go ki. The Bob Dole (gobdol) bibimbab is also good.

This is the greatest place to order or take out from because they have lightening speed delivery. It seems nearly impossible how fast they can get food to your door. They have a very extensive menu and the prices are very low. Their salads are good and the chef's specials are also tasty. This is my number 1 place to call up when I need food in a hurry!

Busy Upper East Side pizzeria/restaurant on the corner of Second Av and 69 Street. Family friendly - plexiglass window for little ones to see the pizzas being made and baked. They serve bread and olive oil (no butter). Salads are ample, enough for two. Caesar salad (insalata romana) is great ($7 or $17 for family size - big enough for 4). Pastas are okay but people come here for the thin-crust pizza which arrives bubbling hot. A large pie starts at about $15 and when you add salad, drinks, appetizers, your bill could be $50+ which is a lot more than you thought you would spend for a night out for pizza so make it an occasion. Service is congenial. Atmosphere is casual.

Spice has great, spicy Thai food. And it's hipper than your average Asian restaurant. Plus it's one of the best values in Manhattan. Definitely one to add to your list. One of about three places we ever order take out from.

Daniel is expensive and amazing at the same time. The food is incredibly pricey, so bring a packed wallet and a special occasion, and enjoy the opulence! The decor is elegant and the staff is extremely obliging. They are well informed of what's on the menu and will help you with any questions or dietary concerns that you may have. Nothing bad to say about it - it is worth they money if you have it!

We were not impressed by Tabla. Indian fusion that doesn't work. The food was too salty and just not very good. Certainly doesn't deserve the hype. On the bright side, some of the snacks were good and Danny Devito was sitting next to us (Louis DePalma is still one of my all time favorite characters). But the main courses simply didn't cut it.
