Yeah, George G's story is so "unbelievable" that I don't believe it. I think he made it up. Now, I also think GETE is overrated and not worth the crazy brunch lines, but I seriously doubt they delivered a hamburger with a bite taken out of it. That just sounds ridiculous. Anyway, we rarely go to GETE unless it's really early or late because of the lines. When the lines are nuts for brunch, we go across the street to Fred's, or over to Cafe Lalo - which doesn't have only dessert but also brunch, with poached eggs combos and pastries and things.

I will agree more with the second reviewer here than the first. I find Dramatics NYC just fine. I have gone here on and off for 6 years. The stylists are friendly and competent - they always smile, introduce themselves by name, and make the RIGHT amount of chit chat (not so much that it's tiresome, but not so little that it's awkwardly unfriendly).
Perhaps my haircuts aren't that complicated, but they have never done a bad job on me. The prices are reasonable. It's a solid "staple" salon in my local repetoire.

I'm familiar with this local purple oddity. Brilliant: let's create a combination toystore/kids' barber shop. That way, the most spoiled, demanding, ADHD children who won't submit to a normal cheap haircut can whine and beg for expensive toys as extortion from their weary, defeated parents who have given up trying to make their entitled darlings do anything that isn't instantly fun, and enjoyable.
Next, we should also create candystore/pediatricians' offices, amusement park libraries, and broccoli that comes in a variety of ice cream flavors.
Parents, do yourselves a favor: don't give in. Too loud, crazy, and expensive. Not every friggin' moment of your kids' lives need to be stimulating, zany, and kid-oriented. And do your kids a favor too: get them uccustomed to tolerating chores and tasks that aren't gee-whiz thriling all the time. As the famous book on emotional intelligence revealed, teach your kid "not to eat the marshmallow." They'll be more successful later in life if they learn to sit still and get a $10 haircut.
Just my $0.02.

I live down the street, and I have NEVER seen this shop open. Wait, that's not true: one time I passed by, and saw workmen with a tall ladder attending to water damage in the ceiling of the old shop.
Ok, that's not true either. ANOTHER time it was open when I had taken the day off from work, so I could actually pass by during the 6.5 hours when it's open on weekdays, *exactly* during other people's work hours. So I stopped in. I just had to see what lay beyond the sad, yellowing, unchanging display in the window: some vertical blinds, multi-ply glass, and random frame corners.
The shop looks much like what's in the weird window. The owner was kind of glum and seemed not very interested in me. I really wonder what keeps shops like this open in NYC, where I'm sure the overhead is outrageous. I simply wouldn't trust this shop because it looks so ramshackle. Very odd. If this were a movie, this shop would be a front for some criminal activity or magical hijinx or other intrigue; but since this is real life, it's just a tired old shop.
I don't mean to sound so critical - it just baffles me when shops stay open despite not having convenient hours, attractive displays, or anything else you'd think a shop would have to do to attract any customers.

Great source for custom-cut foam, of all thicknesses and types.
I used them to cut a 2" thick piece of foam to fit my window seat. Service was prompt and accurate, and for a 15" x 58" piece, they charged me $24.
I also picked up two 16" x 16" poly fill throw pillows - these were only $5.50 apiece.
I saw another customer in there, getting a custom-cut T-shaped cushion to replace a worn out couch cushion precisely. Kind of a neat and inexpensive solution to a couch with worn out cushions but good upholstery.
They were courteous and I would use them again. One note of warning: I went on June 26, 2005, and was trying to reach their store before they closed at 6pm. I almost didn't make it. Lesson learned: don't try to get to this store on the day of the Gay Pride Parade!

I followed my stylist Felix from Siaani to Vog in 2001, and made many return trips to Vog after that.
Good prompt service, good cuts and coloring, and polite staff. They did a nice job on my short pixie style - short yet feminine. The stylists make nice conversation without talking your ear off. They are careful to understand your desires before they start snipping or coloring - key feature of their service.
They carry a modest range of mid to high-end hair products and natural brushes. Unpretentious, untrendy, but talented. A solid recommendation.

I don't know if this is standard operating procedure, but I thought I should share an experience that I found upsetting when I took my pet to the Animal Medical Center in May 2000.
My small animal was suffering from severe edema (water retention). The vet could not feel anything through all the abdominal fluids, so she took an X-ray. The X-ray was equally useless, due to all of the fluid obstructing the view.
The vet then told me that the animal probably had some kind of tumor which was causing the edema, but it could not be seen or felt well enough to be sure. Here is where it got upsetting...
Having worked with lab rats, I knew personally that it was possible to anesthetize a small animal using cotton balls soaked in ether, and use a fine needle to draw off fluids. I myself have drawn blood from rats' tails and hearts, and the rats all lived to squeak another day. So I suggested to this vet that she follow this procedure to draw off some of the excess fluids from the abdomen, so she could then either feel or X-ray effectively.
She refused to do this. To this day, I can't figure out why. She had an inconclusive, educated guess for a diagnosis, and there was only one way to find out for sure. The only alternative was to put the pet down. Given that we were going to kill the pet anyway, why not just take this last measure to be sure? Is this how you would let a doctor treat your grandmother?
Feeling powerless, I let the vet kill my pet first, THEN draw off the fluids for an exam, This seemed maddeningly backwards. Thank GOODNESS the brief autopsy confirmed the diagnosis (inoperable fatal tumor), or I would have been livid that they had killed my pet essentially for no reason except to follow their infernal protocol.
Or DID the exam confirm it? I'll never know if the vet just told me that to get rid of me or not. I got the feeling, despite her compassionate tone, that she really didn't feel like expending a lot of effort on my pet who was only a few ounces.
To add insult to injury, when I asked for the X-ray, they would not let me have it. At this point, my pet is DEAD, and I am never coming back. Why not let me have the X-ray to keep, especially since I had just paid $25 for it?
Pretty upsetting. What do you think?
