Woodlawn Cemetery is a surprisingly nice place to spend an afternoon. I first ventured up there because graveyards spook me out and I was in the mood for a little spookiness, but on that account I ended up quite disappointed. On the other hand, however, I had a lovely afternoon strolling along the wide, winding paths and looking at all the old headstones, statues and mausoleums. I think that I read somewhere that Woodlawn Cemetery has a larger variety of trees than Central Park, which I believe, there were certainly more lawns, trees and bushes than I'd been around in a while!
The Cemetery offers a series of tours, from Victorian Statuary to the famous figures buried on the grounds. This year I went on the Nighttime Halloween Walking Tour, which highlights some of the spookier stories in the cemetery. You can even put together your own group and plan a private tour.
Please remember, however, that Woodlawn is still a functioning cemetery and be respectful of the dead and their loved ones who may be visiting them.

The other hairstylists come over and say "oooh, how'd you do that!". No joke, I went to see Jeff after reading about him on Judy's Book and it was great. I looked super cute coming out after the cut, and I still look super cute several weeks after, all for $13 plus tip, friendly conversation included at no extra charge.

It was such a long time before I ventured into City Opera Thrift shop because I just assumed that everything in it would be vintage and out of my price range, boy was I wrong!
There are some great older pieces, but there are some good newer things too - some of the clothes, books, even DVD box sets - and everything is very reasonably priced. Some of the clothes are nice enough to have higher price tags, but once I walked in and all of those were 50% off, which just goes to show that you never know!
There's furniture, clothes, jewelry, hats - everything you'd expect to find in a good thrift store, plus I peeked in the window after hours the other day and there were several big boxes of comic books, so always keep an eye out for new stuff!
Proceeds benefit, what else, the City Opera. Good Deeds Through Shopping, can't get better than that.

Anthony's Fruit and Deli just expanded, adding a whole new, spacious store next door to the original one. And do you know how they managed to do that?
By charging their customers 14% sales tax, almost double what it should be.
When I asked the owner how two 74 cent cans of cat food came out to $1.74 he rudely told me it was "tax" and haughtily offered me the receipt, then made fun of my other purchases.
When I thought better of my timidness and came back for the receipt a few minutes later, he willingly printed it out for me, complete with 14% sales tax. Not wanting to accuse unfairly, I left and checked with the city to make sure I wasn't mistaken about the sales tax rate. I wasn't.
This is a neighborhood deli, not some anonymous pit stop in the middle of the city, and they're screwing everyone over, and being rude about it!
That ain't right.

This thrift store has the best of both worlds - $2-$3 books and $1 vinyl albums, as well as high end collectibles and bargain designer clothes. The clothes are high quality and in good condition, and if you need a pair of leather pants or a ball gown, this is the place for you! The store isn't cluttered, and there are some real treasures to be found. Best yet, the proceeds support Housing Works, a program that provides housing, health care, job assistance for people living with AIDS.

This little store is little more than a hole in the wall, and the inventory is nothing special. The 6-packs of tube socks are cheap ($5), as are the T-shirts ($4 for a black one), knit hats, caps, belts, cheap hair clips and Christmas decorations and other such "I forgot to stop at the real store, good thing this is on the way home" items.
What is special about this store is its new location -- inside. For 6 years the owner sold his wares from a couple of card tables in front of the deli up the block, it was only this month that he was able to open up a real store - and just in the nick of time, as the recent temperature plunge proved.
So what's more Judy's Book than supporting a local guy who's worked his bum off to make his way up a couple notches in the world? I'm proud and excited for him and I want him to do well. So go buy some socks, they make great Holiday gifts (and mean your loved ones can put off doing laundry for a week!)
On Metropolitan Avenue between Graham and Humboldt in Williamsburg.

Loco Burrito is one of the few burrito places that I've found in New York that live up to my California-raised burrito standards. It's a great quick alternative to fast food, since most of the dishes (burritos, tacos, nachos, enchiladas) are some combination of freshly prepared meats, simple rice and beans, cheese, fresh pico de gallo and/or fresh veggies and tortillas - a.k.a. not enough room for a lot of processed junk in there.
The menu includes some more interesting options like the jerk chicken burrito (yum!), as well as vegan alternatives like tofu cheese and sour cream.
The service has always been quick and good, as has delivery.
* Leticia, I don't know if they have gift certificates, but it's in the neighborhood and it quick and cheap!

I was a huge devotee of the J'adore cafe on 7th Avenue before it closed - I'm assuming the 23rd street location carries most of the same products. The desserts are dangerous, especially the sugar cookies, if you get one don't taste it until you're too far away from the store to go back for another :). Cookies, pastries, cupcakes, sandwiches, breakfast, coffee, everything I've tried has been great! (and the red velvet cake that appears every so often must be good too, as it's always gone before I get to try it!)
There's also a sign saying to ask about their kosher and sugar free deserts. I haven't, but given their high standards for the rest of their menu, it's probably a good bet.

I say go with the Chinatown bus, but be careful what company. I've never had a problem with Fung Wah - it was cleaner and nicer than Greyhound - but the one time I took the Apex line the whole bus smelled like pee.
The other positive aspect of the Chinatown buses is that they're only recently well known, so you're likely to be riding with people who live in Chinatown and students, while every obnoxious, smelly, loud drunk knows about Greyhound and will head straight to Port Authority. I've definitely had more peaceful rides with fellow Chinatown bus riders.
A side note though: be sure to look at a map of the city you're going to before you arrive, as the buses pretty much just drop you on a corner as opposed to a centrally located big bus station.
