I've been to St. Mark's Veterinary Hospital twice - both for sick pet rats. I really, really appreciated the fact that they were as respectful to me as they were to people who came in with more traditional pets like cats and dogs. The desk staff and all of the vets and assistants that I spoke to were very nice, calm and knowledgeable, and, most importantly, gave a sense of understanding that when your pet's sick it can seem like the end of the world. I was also impressed that the vet helped me understand what was wrong - like showing me how she could tell that my rat was dehydrated.
I was particularly impressed when I had to take one of my rats in to be put to sleep. The Dr. explained what was going to happen and, even though it was already early evening, gave me as much time as I needed to say goodbye. The experience hit me harder than I expected, and the vet and the receptionist were both so concerned at how much I was crying that they checked to make sure that I had somewhere to go and someone to be with afterward.

More
Along with being a custom t-shirt printing shop (see my other review!), Social Tees houses a grassroots animal rescue organization.
Robert, the owner, specializes in rescuing exotic reptiles, has many of them in the shop, and has been in the paper several times with some of his more rare animals.
He also, however, has a heart for the furry and takes in more cats and dogs (most brought in by people in the neighborhood) than he can probably handle (he's also had pet rats, mice, birds and goodness knows what else). Even though it's not a big organization, Robert ensures that his animals find good, responsible homes and has a screening process for potential adoptive "parents".
If you're not looking for a permanent pet, talk to Robert about lending a hand as a foster parent for a dog or cat (he can't keep the dogs in the store, so he always needs foster homes for them). You can keep them for a weekend or until he (or you) finds them a home. I've fostered 3 dogs and a cage full of mice, and it was great to have some canine companionship for a couple weeks even though I can't get my own dog. Also consider giving a cat a home to scare away mice!
Another idea is to stop by with the kids to check out the snakes and lizards. If it's not busy Robert or one of his volunteers can tell them a little about the animals (my personal recommendation is to make a small donation towards their rescue efforts in exchange for their time).

It's funny because on the surface, this looks like a great vet. The staff are friendly and the walls are plastered with pictures of presumably happy pets. The thing is, he doesn't really listen. He won’t give me a prescription for the food I said worked better than the one he’s put my cats on. He was extraordinarily rude to my friend when he brought in my sick cat. It’s ok if you’re looking for something close, and I’m sure other people will disagree with me, but I’m just not happy and won’t be taking my cats there any more.

This is a great pet store- it small but host a great variety of animals. The staff is freindly and very helpful when it comes to figuring out animal behavior. I have bought birds, hamsters and lately a cat from them- and I have never had a problem with a sick pet. Any problems you can always call them. Their pet supplies and "food by the pound" is reasonably priced.

You have to have a pet that enjoys being around other pets. This being a reflection on the owners of pets who enjoy other peoples company too, its a busy dog care centre. I have a Pomeranian puppy who loves the attention from big dogs to small ,to all types of people. He gets a great groom & I would not return their repeatedly if it wasnt for their helpul staff. We are after all not living in the upper east side (no dis-respect to upper-eastsiders!).

My fiance and I hired Julie to help us with our overactive (if you can believe it) Bulldog, Precious. She was smart, thorough, nice, reassuring and her assessment has helped us tremendously. She has reduced our indoor "accidents" by 80% or more, and given us a feeding/exercise program that makes us and Precious happier and more in sync. Her thorough notes after each session are extremely helpful; shs is amazing. We worked with someone else who wasn't half as good.
Great experience and very effective training.
I was Very Very satsified and have a well-trained and happy dog because of dog gone smart!

One Horrible Experience after Years of Solid Visits

More
I took my cat there for years for both veterinary services and boarding. I had nothing but great experiences there until last year when I boarded my cat over the Thanksgiving holiday. When I returned, my cat stank of urine and there were mouse droppings in his kennel. The clinic refused to acknowledge any of this and accused me of being crazy and trying to "spread hate". Appalled, I have never gone back. I don't know whether this was an isolated incident or whether the quality of service has simply taken a turn for the worse -- regardless, I was treated in an extremely unprofessional manner and my animal was not given proper care. Think twice before going to Riverside.

Animal General is a great veterinary environment -- my pets are never scared to go there or put off once they are inside. I have always been very happy with the vet services I've received there and the prices are competitive. The desk staff is friendly and helpful, and the vet is great with my cat. I recommend it as a great place to take any pet.

I had a terrible experience at Heights Vetrinary. I went in response to reading the reviews here, but was so upset by the way that they treated both my dog and I that I felt a responsibility to inform others. My dog went in for bloodwork prior to an operation. I asked the practice to fax the results to the veterinary hospital where my dog was to have the operation and to inform me if anything was wrong. Sadly, they did neither. The hospital had to repeatedly call to request the results. When none were faxed I called again and spoke to the vet, Jan. She first informed me that it wasn't her fault that records hadn't been sent. When I asked just to hear if the results were ok she told me that my dog's white blood count was far too low and that he should not be having surgery. When I asked why no one told me this after they got the results she once again repeated that it was not her fault and then hung up on me. I was simply stunned. Luckily, the hospital where my dog had already been admitted for another condition jumped to the rescue, doing extra tests, following up and answering my questions. I really, really, really don't recommend ever using this vet.

Hydrosurge is a great way to either wash your dog yourself or have it done by an expert. This is not a grooming salon, but just an old fashioned dog washing place. Jay, the owner, has these huge bathtubs mounted on the wall and a wide assortment of shampoos and conditioners for your use. He is a big guy who can handle any kind of dog, including my nintey-pound hound dog. I always have Jay wash Riley himself as it's too much work for me. Riley always comes back to me smelling as sweet as flowers and feeling like satin. He takes good care with the dog's eyes (making sure no shampoo gets in them) and he cleans his ears really well. he has medicated shampoo if your dog has dandruff or other skin issues. He is chatty and quite knowledgable about dogs.
