Very organized & pleasant. 8/30/2006

Kinokuniya is, I believe, the largest Japanese bookstore in NYC, and it makes a great shopping experience for anyone who is in the market for either Japanese books or books about Japan that are in English. The staff is so friendly and nobody gave me a strange look for being a tiny little very obviously non-Japanese girl buying tons of magazines in Japanese. The prices are high but it's worth it if you're used to paying shipping from Japan to America. more

Japanese Books! 7/1/2006

Kinokuniya is a huge two story Japanese bookstore in NYC, located by the art museum. If you're looking for manga in its original Japanese form, theres an floor just for you. When i'm in New York, I make this store my first stop before I go elsewhere. Theyre selection of manga is huge, and on the first floor there are loads of other books in Japanese. You can also get magazine, stationery, and other goodies direct from Japan. The staff there has been wonderful and super friendly each time I have gone. If you are in the city sometime and want a manga or another book in Japanese, stop here first. more

Japanese resource 5/27/2006

While most of Kinokuniya's stock is in Japanese, they also have many books about Japanese culture and by Japanese authors in English. Additionally, they have an excellent selection of magazines and is the best place to by a Go set in New York City, especially if you want a nice one, although they do have everything from plastic travelling ones on up. more

Beautiful Paper 4/22/2006

Kinokuniya is not just for people who read Japanese. For me, this is a must stop shop for origami lovers as they have a good selection of books and paper. There are also small gift items, movies, CDs, kids school supplies. Anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture should make a trip here. It is an interesting store to look around, especially if you have been to Japan and are familiar with how different shopping there is versus shopping in the US. It is a little piece of Tokyo right in Rockefeller Center (but less crowded!). more

Japanese Bookstore 12/17/2005

If you're visiting Rockfeller Center, be sure to drop by Kinokuniya. An authentic japanese bookstore in the heart of Manhattan. You can find all sorts of novels, manga, and magazines. There are also a section of music CDs. Upstairs, you can find japanese stationery items. They have a really nice display of pens and stylish mechanical pencils that I throw in as stocking stuffers. They are expensive but according to my friend's feedback, they work well, don't bleed and last for quite a long time. more

Amazing Japanese bookstore 8/14/2005

Unexpectedly located right in the heart of Rockefeller center, Kinokuniya is a slice of Japan. They have everything -- school supplies (my favorite: pens with smiling plastic rice ball toppers), magazines, books, movies, music, an amazing selection of manga, even a tea cafe in the back. Everything is in Japanese, of course, and the clientele are mainly Japanese, but you do catch the occasional American wandering through the manga. A great little oasis of Japan resources. more

great japanese book store 8/13/2005

If you're looking for a great selection of japanese magazine and books, I'd stop by here because they have everything! From the latest fashion to gadget magazines and even to the latest pop and rock music from japan, you're likely to see it here. The cashier and sales staff are very polite and friendly, but if you're going to speak english to them, I'd speak to them very slowly so that they get a chance to listen and respond. Most people say things too fast, and they won't be able to respond. I usually go here for the latest movie selection and the latest books. They even have a children's book selection so that you can get your child japanese children's books! Over all, I'd check it out. You can't drink in the store, but you can always go to the cafe next door. more

Japanese Book Store 8/10/2005

Kinokuniya bookstore has a great selection of japanese books and animation. Its a beautiful store just to visit even if you don't know a word of japanese. It is located right by Rockefeller center so it make a good tourist stop. They have a lovely selection of stationary on the second floor. It can get a little pricey but the paper is beautiful. more

Japanese Bookstore 7/13/2005

They sell Japanese books, stationery, origami paper, and much more. It is a fairly large store and is typically pretty busy. It has a great location by Rockerfeller Center and is very easy to get to. The downside is that it is a bit more expensive than other stores in the City, but the selection is far better. more
