But that's kinda the fun of it. They have lots of random books here and some very inexpensive new hardcovers, but sometimes the used fiction section is stuffed with second rate 80s thrillers.

Partners & Crime is a good book store to stock up on murder crimes and mystery books. The staff knows there stuff and are always able to help you find what you want. Last time I went I left with a ton of books to last me for a long time. Next time I feel the need to read something that goes bump in the night I will be heading back to partners and crime.

At Housing Works Book Cafe you can browse, read, have a light meal or dessert, attend a reading or music event - and all the money you spend there goes to support homeless people with AIDS. The store is super relaxed, run almost completely by volunteers, and a great place to hang out. There are thousands of books, organized in the usual categories, at great discount prices - half of the retail or less. Also LPs and CDs and tapes and comics. I love this place!
Pros: Great Selection, Relaxed atmosphere, Low prices

You don't need to be a child to appreciate this store, it makes you feel like one. The store offers the finest children's books ever written—old and new—and stocks an impressive selection of antique and first edition books and illustrations. So, if you are looking for the latest Harry Potter or a first edition Roald Dahl, this is the spot. It's an absolute haven for the book lover whatever their age.

A nice little book store, although it doesn't have too many books in the impulse buy price range, which is one of my favorite book store features. They sell nice bags. Their religion section isn't good but their fiction and classics sections are, as well as games. Crowded, but that just adds to the atmosphere. You can buy books by the foot here which is silly and expensive but amusing.

My professor has a fondness for choosing the most obscure books known to man and then expecting us to find them in short periods of time. I had been unable to buy Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation online. I was really surprised (not to mention panicked) when I realized this morning that I'm supposed to have the book read for tomorrow's class. After calling every Barnes and Noble in the city, not to mention the Strand, Strand Annex, Three Lives..the list goes on..I was giving up hope. And then St. Marks had it. AND, to top it all off, they're open until midnight, which is great because I have work until ten. Friendly service, as well.

I was in the store recently and realized the store no longer carries new travel guides. The store's new focus is on antiquarian and hard-to-find titles, which makes it a terrific place for collectors, historians or those simply looking for a gift for their scholarly friends or loved ones. The entire world is on display, and they also carry interesting signed first editions and books I never knew existed. This is a bookstore and small mom and pop business worth supporting, and the selection is first rate.

Comic Book lovers will love this store. Possibly one of the best in the city itself. It's not very large, but their selection of comics is extraordinary, and their customer service is great. I realize there are plenty of comic book stores in NY, but this one is the elite of the elite.

More
Jim Hanley's Universe is located in NYC near Madison Square Garden, and is popular with the tourists. There's always a huge influx streaming towards this place. Maybe that accounts for the lackof back issues available, but they are trying to fix that problem. If you are selling a good collection, they might offer you some good money for it. They carry everything from the two big publishers to all indepedent comic books. Lots of merchandise is readily available. There is also a lot of comic book signings from the many writers and artists who produce them. Even celebrities come by and grace their presence at this store. As you can imagine this place is packed as a result. It's a fun place to visit if you are in Manhattan and wish to experience something on a bigger scale. Definitely a treat.
