One of my favorite restaurants. Amazing food every time I go

Worst

I took visiting family to BWG after a recommendation from a friend. However, the service was horrible. Even though we had a reservation we waited for a long period of time and t...

Fresh oysters! 8/6/2007

I really enjoyed my time at the Blue Water Grill. The oysters and selection of seafood is always fresh and the wait staff is attentive. It is pricey, so I would suggest to only indulge at this place for special occassions. Its a great time! more

The oysters are calling me at Blue Water Grill 9/1/2006

I am wary of eating oysters at just any old place especially with all the news about contamination and concerns with storage. The raw bar at Blue Water Grill is always fresh and has a delicious assortment of oysters from east to west. At an average of $2 an oyster, this place is moderately priced for a raw bar. The sushi appetizer here is nothing to rave about and is really not their field. The fish entrées can run an average of $28 which is pricey but the fish is good. I could pass on the fish though and just sit downstairs eating oysters, drinking vodka and enjoying the live jazz. Service was very attentive and pleasant throughout dinner. I enjoyed talking to my waiter who even took the time to explain the different tastes of oysters from different regions. more

Fantastic Fish 7/26/2006

Blue Water Grill is a great place for someone ELSE to take you out. :-) It's a bit pricey, but food is wonderful - very original combinations of fish. Per some of the other reviews, upstairs is definitely quieter than downstairs. Restaurant has so many tables it's hard to believe the service is so good, but it is. Great place to be taken to, or to take someone special to celebrate a special occasion. more

Excellent fish restaurant 6/2/2006

Blue Water Grill is a lovely space (although if you want to be able to hear yourself on a busy night, make sure you ask to sit upstairs), with excellent seafood. They have one or two non-ish dishes to accomodate the picky, but the reason to come here is lobsters, oysters and harder to find fish like bara. Food is simple and without heavy sauces, making it perfect both for seafood lovers and those with special dietary needs. Pricey, but worth it. more

Safe Seafood 5/24/2006

For finicky eaters and female friend constantly on diets I recommend meeting up at this very safe establishment. No you are not going to have the meal of the century or the best fish ever, but you will get swift service and a lovely selection. The oysters and other shellfish are actually better than the fish. Try ordering a few appetizers to share rather than a full entrée portion. The location is convenient and the decor is fun and non threatening--so it's safe for out of towners too. more

Fun for a Party 3/19/2006

I prefer Blue Water for parties to just eating there for dinner. I think they do a great job of setting up a small menu with 2-3 choices for guests (3 course meal). The only downside of this private party favoritism of mine is that I prefer the upstairs room -- it just has a better vibe. Don't get me wrong -- I have enjoyed meals here on my own (without an entourage of 50), especially brunch. Maybe the portions are just off...or I have trouble deciding on the menu. The food is good. You might love it, but you might just like it. more

instant winner 10/11/2005

An instant winner when it opened early in the summer of 1996, Stephen Hanson's sophisticated seafood palace gave people a reason to stay in the city instead of tooling out to the overcrowded Hamptons. Housed in a lofty former bank building, there's a raw bar at the back of the multilevel dining room and attractive outdoor balcony seating. A tray of iced oysters is a must. Other excellent choices include Moroccan-spiced red snapper, lobster by the pound, and lightly grilled Asian-accented swordfish. Blue Water Grill offers an American fare with a menu based largely on seafood and the raw bar. Expect the average entrée to cost for the most part in the range of $12 to $20. more

Strong 8/15/2005

After eating here once the Blue Water Grill has became a favorite sea food spot. I had the most wonderful peice of sea bass. Everyone in my party enjoyed all food. The sauces were outstanding to complement vegetables, fish, and shell fish. Banana tower for dessert: sweet and delicious. With live jazz and crowded room, it was much too loud, Hard to hear across the table. more

Another tasty place in the city good for groups, families, and romantic soirees. 8/9/2005

One of the many BR Restaurant names the Blue Water Grill can be found nestled in famous tourist cities such as Las Vegas, Manhattan, and Chicago. There is no better time to visit this large seafood attraction but during the week of prix-fixe menus. The seating is prompt, the wait staff is tooth-aching sweet, and even the parking can be managed. Specializing in different sea food and fish dishes, this place is not someone who has no interest in the cuisine of fruit-de-la-mer. That would be like coming to a great steakhouse to eat a salad. The restaurant week menu offered many delicious choices including desert, but it was hard to resist ordering things from the regular menu complete with a variety of sushi, oysters, and caviar! By bias towards seafood even overlooked the crowded tiny dinner table which kept tilting under our weight, and the strange patrons on the left wearing jeans and rubber flip-flops. The decor was not special but the Jazz room downstairs will have to be revisited. more

Great Food, Great Scene 6/19/2005

Blue Water Grill is right in the middle of union square and has been named one of new york's most popular hangouts by zagat's. The food is excellent from the fish and steak to the desserts. I especially love the chocolate molten cake. There is a lot of outdoor seating when it's nice out as well and they offer live jazz downstairs. more

This now-classic seafood palace sails on victoriously with its ocean-traveling menu.

Editorial
  • This Union Square classic is such a well-oiled machine, it can feel a little like dining on an cruise ship, albeit an elegant one. Located in a former bank, the three-floor, heavily marbled space is decorated with red and gold antler-shaped sconces, and is filled to the gills with business diners and tourists. The menu executes so consistently, it's obvious why it hasn't changed much over a decade. Nearly every oceanic region is represented: Plump, clean Pacific Northwest oysters can be topped with classic or Thai mignonette, cocktail sauce or horseradish, while the Red Bull sushi roll--a gorgeous swirl of tuna, yellowtail, cilantro and jalapenos--would stand proud at Nobu.
