HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN! 12/27/2009

Over 20 years ago a good friend told us about this restaurant. We loved it, and were faithful customers until about 2 years ago. This past summer we dined there and had a really bad time, but tonight for my Mother's birthday we decided to give them one more try. Never again! The food has become so, how should we say, ""...eh..."" What makes it unacceptable is the horrible service. Our waiter, Rava was no where to be found after he took our order. They served cold sliced rye bread as the bread basket with a strange maple butter. Maple butter and rye bread in an Italian restaurant??? What happened to the wonderful hot focaccia bread that they used to walk around with in a basket? Because we found maple infused butter on cold rye bread a strange prelude to what we thought was going to be a nice Italian dinner, we asked for olive oil in which to dip our rye bread. What was brought out to our table was plain old salad oil. 3 out of the 4 entrees were ""...OK..."" About what you might expect at ""OLIVE GARDEN."" My brother ordered Chicken Parmigiana with a side of spaghetti. What he got was Veal Parmigiana-served over a bed of mashed potatoes with mushy spaghetti. Starch overload! We couldn't get our waiter, Rava's attention. We finally got one of the bus boys to get him. By this time the rest of us had finished our meals. My brother was so frustrated that he did not want to start another meal while the rest of us were finished. Rava said he would mention it to the chef. Five minutes later, Rava came out with our check. He said nothing about what the chef said. We paid and left. We went else where for coffee and dessert. This is such a shame. Pietrasanta was one of our favorite places to eat. Now, I notice a lot of other reviews on this page (and other on-line restaurant reviews) saying the same thing--This used to be one great place, but is has gone down the tubes. Don't waste your money. Say good-bye and find another ""favorite place""...This one belongs to the ages. Pros: Dark lighting so you can't see broken glass on the floor Cons: So-So Food with terrible, indifferent service more

Pietrasanta was DELISH 11/10/2009

Please do yourself a favor and go to Pietrasanta for a delicious Italian meal in New York. Pros: Best Gnocchi Ever! Nice Setting Cons: Wish I could go more often! more

wonderful atmosphere 11/2/2008

I travel often to new york and always make a point to stop in to pietrasanta, the food is amazing and the service is just fantastic. I was frankly shocked to see the poor reviews on this page, this restaurant and its staff have been nothing but good to me over the years. i usually order the veal with portobello mushrooms and it is always high quality. i definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone travelling in manhattan for good prices and delicious food! more

Pietrasanta Restaurant =- Awful treatment of customers 10/20/2008

On Sat, Oct 18 we made a 5:30PM reservation for 4 at Pietrasanta. This was our first time at this restaurant. The prix fixe was very enjoyable and the waitress pleasant. We finished our dessert, paid our bill and were having our coffee. The hostess came to our table and asked us to leave. She said people were waiting in the lobby who are preordered their food; it was done and waiting to be served to them and they needed the table. I have never been asked to leave a restaurant and voiced my opinion. It was totally unacceptable but they would not address the situation - just glad we left. The waitress apologized but I was furious and felt singled out for no good reason. We were not the only patrons in the restaurant and I will never return to this place again. I am a frequent theater patron with many friends who come into the city often and will spread the word about this treatment to customers. Pros: Near theater district Cons: See comments below more

WHAT HAPPENED??? 8/4/2008

We hadn't been to Pietrasanta for perhaps 5 years and were really looking forward to our recent dinner there. All I can say is that it MUST be under new management. The menu is uninspired, the food mediocre and the decor is rather down at the heels now. They used to have interesting pasta dishes on their menu, but no more. When we approached the front door I knew we were at the correct address, but though that certainly the real pietrasanta had moved... unfortunately no. It now looks like any other cut-rate tacky theatre district place. The dull food was edible, but only that. The drinks are weak and they hardly have any Italian wines on their wine list. The waitstaff is amiable but clueless. Sad. This used to be a special and romantic spot. Twice when we were there years before, couples were getting engaged at this restaurant. I can't imagine any guy popping the question in this place now.... Pros: at least we made our theater curtain in time Cons: pretty much everything more

Excellent Italian Food 3/5/2008

We came to Pietrasanta because of a discount certificate, but we will go again because of the excellent food, The mixed greens salid with pecans, beets, pesto and goat cheese was a master piece, Somehow, the homemade pastas were even better. My wife and I have traveled the world, and many times you are treated differently, or the amount or quality of the food is short changed when you use a discount. Not so here, This is a real New York Treasure and well worth the little extra effort needed to get there, and the prices are very reasonable even without a discount, more

Worst Dining experience I have ever had. Terrible Service not good food. 8/20/2007

This was quite easily the worst dining experience I have ever had. I went with my 5 grandchildren at around 5:30pm for a special dinner after a day in the city. Although the restaurant was empty (there were maybe 4 other tables in use) it took the waiter forever to take our order. The food did not come for over 35 minutes. When it did arrive my dish and my grandson's dish were not what we ordered. Instead of apologizing and promptly fixing the situation, the waiter argued with my grandson telling him that he had given him precisely what he had ordered. I had ordered a penne dish and received a linguini dish. After arguing with me the waiter took my dish away and returned 25 minutes later with the SAME dish telling me that he had fixed the situation. During this time I had asked the waiter twice if my meal was coming soon while my grandson mentioned to the manager that I still had not been served my dinner. The service was abysmal. Two of my grandaughters didnt recieve refills on their drinks although they asked different waiters several different times. Management ignored us when we complained at first. The bill was another story. We were charged for seven meals when we had ordered six. Someone had accidentally charged one of our meals twice. The waiter took the bill with promises of fixing it. When he returned he had separated out the charges so that instead of saying linguini (2) it now read linguini(1) linguini (1). Basic math says that he was still charging us for two linguini dishes. At the end of the meal I approached the manager who did not apologize for the rude and arrogant conduct of her waiters or for the mishap with the bill. Instead she called for all of her busboys to quickly clear up our table to, in her own words which we overheard, ""Get them out of here"". Needless to say I have never been more apalled at service in a restaurant. The food was nothing special and the experience was horrendous Pros: They refill your water glass after every sip Cons: The service, the food, the management more

Horrible service, mediocre food 7/22/2007

I dined here in June with 7 friends. We called ahead to make sure the restaurant could accomodate us. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty and our table was the only one our waiter had. Still, after introducing himself to us he took a phone call on his cell phone from what sounded like a girlfriend and proceeded to argue with her very loudly INSTEAD of taking our order. When he finally did return to our table we asked for recommendations. He had none. We asked about splitting the check. Absolutely not! Two of our party odered appetizers; they finally appeared with the meals and the steamed mussels were cold. After our dinner (my pasta was sticky and lukewarm) we each went over the bill and added up our own portions, tax included and agreed to tip 20% even though the service did not warrant it. After double checking everything, we handed in the payment. He came back to us saying we were $15.00 short. We asked if he was shorted on tip. He replied that no, he had taken his tip out. Really???!! He took his tip out (what percent) and then decided we were $15.00 short? How amazing. One of our party felt guilty and handed over $15.00. We all felt cheated out of our money and an enjoyable evening. We of course will not return and have done our best to spread the word. There really is no excuse for waitstaff being rude to paying customers. Especially when the food does not make up for the horrible service. Cons: Service and food. more

What happened?! 5/16/2007

I used to visit fairly regularly. I admit, haven't been in a couple of years. Now, I will never go back. The food was passable - at best. The service was among the worst I've ever experienced. With so many restaurants in this city - and in this neighborhood, why would anyone pay for this. Waiters didn't know what they serve and the bussers - oh my. After refilling my water glass from the other side of the table and spilling water on me and the table, he apologized but did the exact same thing to my friend on my right! They played musical plates - Salad? Veal?, Split salad? There are seat numbers for heaven's sake!!! This was appalling! It never got better. I hate to write bad things but this was ridiculous. Don't go. Pros: Can't think of one good thing that happened. Cons: Poor food and horrible service. more

WOST service BEFORE the menus! 5/12/2007

Tonight my boyfriend and I went here for dinner. We wanted to sit outside, and a waiter told us to sit anywhere we would like. We choose an end table and get bread, cutlery, and ask for menus. I go to the bathroom and come back, and my boyfriend tells me that he got a hard time. He said someone came over and said that he couldn't sit there because he wasn't seated. I asked another waiter, what's going on and he told me to talk to the guy in the 'green shirt'-the manager. I asked him what's going on? VERY RUDELY he tells me you can't sit here, I didn't seat you, I have a reservation here with all these people. I explained ot him that we were told we could sit anywhere. INSTEAD OF BEING POLITE AND A GOOD HOST, he didn't do anything. Of course we got up and left. I told the waiter that his manager has a sh***ty way with customers. The manger was so rude and could've at least apologized for the misunderstanding on his staff's part (who told us to sit anywhere) and offered us another table. He was an a**hole. And if the stale bread said something about the food, I'm glad we didn't eat there. We went to Uncle Nick's instead, who were so kind and had great food as always. Cons: Incompetent waiters, RUDE host/manager, stale bread more

When the manager & waiters cannot determine whether one plate is veal & the other chicken 3/18/2007

-- would YOU be confident about eating at a place again? We certainly would not, and we will not eat there again: two of our dishes came out, one veal the other chicken (in a group with two other entrees) and they both were so covered in a tomato paste and with the exact same sidedishes that the waiters could not determine which was which (after, by the way, putting it in front of someone who had ordered something else). The taste was also about the same. The other aspects of the experience were similar. Pros: Near Port Authority Cons: Food stinks, service stinks worse. more

Horrible service and they tried to sneak in a 21% tip. Food was utterly maudlin; stale bread. 3/15/2007

The only thing going for it is the location, close to theatres. And that is why they stay in business, we bet, because otherwise it is really hard to see why anyone would continue to patronize them after the initial experience. We say this as a couple who eats at many restaurants around the city and around the country (including significant international travel). In our view, if you have to eat close to your Bway show, grab pizza or something simple from an equally nearby place, and you'll be better off (heck, even McDonald's is a much better value, and, believe us, we resist like all get-out ever having to eat there!). Pros: None except convenience to Broadway shows Cons: Everything else, especially the fake charm host more

Nastissimo!!!! 1/5/2007

Well, let's see.... the pollo was something i could have made when i was ten by over-baking a chicken breast and dumping spiced ketchup on it. and the risotto...oh my. the margherita pizza was nothing but cheese pizza, and even as cheese pizza, it was foul. Cons: disgusting food more

What happened to this restaurant? 1/2/2006

I used to really like it here -- but after dinner last night, I doubt whether I'll return. Not too crowded, but had to wait forty-five minutes for our entrees. People at the next table came in fifteen minutes after us, but were served before us. Pasta I had was decent (agnolotti with lamb), but the portion was so small it was laughable. Not sure what happened here, but I miss the Pietrasanta of a few years ago. Pros: decent pastas Cons: irregular service, small portions more

In a word...yuck 9/17/2005

I would not recommend this place for italian food. It does not appear to be authentic italian cuisine but an experimentation of italian style. Worst of all the pasta that I ordered with clams came with 7 large clams that were tough and chewy, were in the shell, and the whole dish was so saltly that it was inedible. Rather than create a scene with my friends and send the dish back I just didn't eat it. This was definitely not worth the $35 I paid for dinner. My italian mother recommends le tre venezie instead and she never likes italian restaurants when she can prepare a better meal at hom. Pros: friendly wait staff, decent wine list Cons: over salty food, overpriced more

great food, great value! 3/10/2005

I've been coming to this restaurant for nearly 12 years, since I found out the owners are the same folks who own my verry favority NYC restaurant, Pietrasanta (up the street at 47th). The food is fresh and varied, great use of herbs and seasonings, WONDERFUL sweet potato fries, and the weekend brunch - $9.95 for beverage (including wine or cocktail) and entree from two dozen-plus selections, or $12.95 with dessert - is unbeatable. Make a reservation on weekends or at pre-theatre times. We try to get here as often as we can! more

RUDE!! RUDE!! RUDE!!! 11/7/2004

It was 7:45 PM and they had a special that starts at 8 PM. When I asked the host if we could have the special he said absolutely not. It starts at 8PM. When I asked him why, he kept cutting me off and not letting me ask a question AT ALL!! Then he said he grew tired of this and didn't have time for me to talk to him. He cut me off 5 times and then practically shooed me away. For standard pasta, in which I've been to this place before, it is not worth it. I was surprised by my second visit and will never return again. more

Horrible Experience and Food 9/8/2004

My girlfriend and I stopped in for an early dinner one evening. We were sadly disappointed by the food and service. The ambiance is nice, but the wait staff was rude and unattentive. We thought the food would be great based on the owner and head chef, but it was lacking just about everything from flavor to presentation. The only saving grace was that they offered a early dinner prix-fixed offer. The cost was $10 for wine, salad/soup, and a main course. Unfortunately, I could have gotten a better meal for $10 at any fast food joint or pizza joint. We give Pietrasanta four thumbs down between the two of us. Pros: Location, Ambiance Cons: , Bad Food more
