Jose at Astor Place quality cut and color 11/12/2016

I have been going to Jose at Astor Place for over ten years and have always gotten a great haircut for a very fair price. I highly recommend Jose for all your cut and color needs. And he also has gotten me in the chair and out fairly quickly. A+++ barber! more

I used to go to Astor P before I moved to Upstate, where everyone I've tried butchers my short, thick hair. Just visited NYC and got a beautiful cut and color from Carmen, new to Astor P. She LISTENED and she really knows what she is doing---knew exactly how to shape and texturize a short cut. I'm hoping someone in Upstate will be able to copy it. more

I usually write reviews but after coming in from chicago on a business trip i stayed in downtown manhattan and i need a quick haircut. it was a great haircut she is so cute and sweet, next time im in new york suzy is the one!!!! more

Great hairstylists 8/25/2010

Had to go to an emergency meeting out of the country and on the way to NYC airport stopped over here to get a shave and styling. They took great care of me for the rush i was under and I am happy to provide a testimonial more

Great Men's Cut 3/10/2006

My husband (he has "difficult" hair) has been getting his hair cut here for the past few years and I couldn't be more pleased. The price is right (inexpensive), he doesn't have to make an appointment (I am so jealous of this - it is such a hassle for me to get an appt. sometimes), and his hair comes out looking great. I sat in here with him a couple of weeks ago and was AMAZED at how many barber chairs were in the maze underground. I loved looking at the collages at different barbers/stylists mirrors. There is a good vibe here. more

Astor Place -- cheap cut 9/3/2005

My husband has been getting his hair cut here for years. He loves it mostly for the price -- you can't beat it. I would venture to say this is definately one of the least expensive haircuts in Manhattan!! The actual hair cut is a little bit hit and miss -- depending on who you get. For the most part, he is generally happy with the cuts he's gotten. He likes it because he can just walk in and get it done -- no planning ahead and making appointments. They get you in quickly with little waiting. If you have a simple style and don't mind taking a bit of a risk -- then I highly recommend trying this place. You certainly can't beat the price!! more

The Cheapest Haircut in NYC! 8/21/2005

Look no further for the cheapest haircut in New York. Astor Place Hair has fifty stylists waiting for you to walk in. Both male and female stylists work in this huge basement salon. Men can have a barber style cut or perhaps a mullet. Great place for kids and those looking to spend their cash on better things. I wouldn't go in there looking to come out looking like Madonna. In a pinch, Astor Place Hair does the trick! more

chop shop 8/20/2005

This old school institution on Astor Place is where all the punkers used to get it all buzzed off, and now they go through hundreds of people at a time in this downstairs lair of hair. It is hard to get the same person twice cutting your hair and I don't think I've ever seen scissors there (just buzzers), but it is cheap! more

Inconsistent, but worth the risk 8/20/2005

Some of the barbers in this discount palace are undiscovered geniuses. Some of them are scissors wielding madmen. If you try a few people you'll find one you like, and you may never go anywhere else. It may, however, take a bad haircut to learn who is who. A great place to go if you have a limited amount of time, as the cuts are fast and you will never have to wait. more

Something for everyone 8/17/2005

This place is a factory of hair stylists/barbers. They can do everything. From the quick once-over with clippers to the wildest hair colorings you'll ever see. They were specialists with elaborate hair "carvings" but that seems to be out of style. It's still worth looking at the pictures of some of the more outrageous cuts. Also, virtually every person there has several pictures of celebrities they've cut hair for. Even though their prices are rising, you can get celebrity-quality styles at prices that are a fraction of a salon. more

So much talent all under one roof! Astor Place Hair has got over 50. Tell the owner at the front desk what you would like done, and he will match you up with someone that can do the job-very well. I highly recommend Vivian for women's hair. I have seen her do wonders with all types of hair. If Ula is in on that particular day you may choose to have her wax your eyebrows--she has, after all perfected the arch! more
