I bought a camcorder at J and R, having shopped there frequently under the assumption that, unlike on the internet, they would take back defective products. The camcorder was terrible, so the next day I tried to return it. NO ONE, from the top to the bottom would help me. They all insisted it was just a bad quality camera, and that I should have done more research. So their warranties are lies--they will NOT accept returns on merchandise. You risk a lot of money shopping there. Best Buy, Circuit City, anyplace but J and R in the future.

Consistently, inexcusably, the worst service of any retail outlet in New York. Duane Reed employees almost always behave as if they are doing you an amazing favor to take your money. At this particular branch, there's a woman who may hold the land speed record for slowest walking.
Go to Walgreens--not great but a world above Duane Reed.

While this place is well known as one of America's leading art supply stores, it also has an amazing selection of Clairefontaine notebooks and fountain pen supplies (Waterman, Mont Blanc, Parker, etc.) at very low prices. Clairefontaine, in particular, has been getting very expensive elsewhere. While you're there, spend a few moments wandering around the many floors of incredible art supplies too!

I keep thinking everyone knows about this place, and yet everytime I come here it's empty (except for European tourists). This is the Metropolitan Museum's medieval art collection in a reconstructed French cloister at the top of Manhattan. It is one of the world's finest art collections in one of the most magical places. A gem.
By the way, like the Met, you are free to pay what you wish--despite misleading signs.

UncleGeorge's is far from the best Greek restaurant, but there can be no doubt that it's the cheapeset. An Astoria institution, open 24 hours, Uncle George's serves huge portions of peasanty Greek food for the lowest prices around. Some standouts include their chicken kebabs and their skordalia. A bottle of wine here costs much less than a glass would run in a Manhattan Greek restaurant.

There is no more authentic Greek cafe in America. The food is decent, but it's beside the point. The Athens Cafe is all about sitting outside and being seen sipping your frappe or "medio" coffee. The scene here, on a warm evening, is pure Mediterranean. If you must eat, the desserts are good, and the appetizers acceptable.

Hummus, as served in most "middle eastern" restaurants in Manhattan, is awful. One of the very few exceptions is this Israeli hole in the wall in the East Village. Real hummus experts will tell you that only the Lebanese and Israelis can make this stuff right, and the latter variety is rendered with perfect authenticty here.

In a neighborhood not known for its fine cuisine, Turkuaz is a welcome addition. The ambience is charming and the food delicious. Turkish cuisine, which is subtle and complex, is frequently made bland--but never at Turkuaz where delights such as Imam Byaildi and Chicken Yougurtlu Kebab are perfect.
A little cheaper at lunch.

For take out or delivery this place is unbeatable. The combination of superb Vietnamese food and bargain prices make this place so packed that take out or delivery are a must. The thai influenced Vietnamese cuisine is a good as any in the city. A few of the appetizers are below par, but if you stick to entrees you will not be disappointed.
