not comfortable with this office 6/8/2009

I haven't felt good about Dr. Selick's office since I started going there a year ago. It's completely disorganized, wait times are ridiculous even first thing in the AM, the nurse doesn't have voicemail so you can only leave a message for the admin ass't who returns calls (or creates another step by calling you back only to ask the doc your question and calling you again) and has often been rude as if she knows anything about medicine. The office is cramped and downstairs from the waiting room (handicapped patients are S.O.L.), and you have to take your own chart with you downstairs to ANOTHER waiting room, and I don't know something about that just bothers me. Dr. Selick's nurse is always busy and stressed out, they always overbook, and during your 2nd waiting room experience Dr. Selick can often be heard yelling, "Rebecca!!!???" from down the hall. I also noticed an extreme lack of sensitivity, like everything was rushed, robotic and routine and no care was given to whether the patient is uncomfortable or nervous. These are sensitive issues they deal with here! I feel like everything is about the office's schedule and not about the patient; I was greeted more than once with a "what's your problem why can't you just do it" sort of attitude. The billing office also screwed up and despite me calling more than once to correct it and telling them what my insurance said, I kept getting overdue notices until I corrected them a final time and demanded they stop billing me incorrectly. A real pain in the a**. Also the office is far out of the way to anywhere but the nearby hospital, and the office's policy of having to go every 6 months if you're on birth control is absurd - there's no reason for it they just want to be able to bill for an office visit! I'M SWITCHING!! more

Very thorough 3/23/2009

Dr. Selick is quick, to the point and honest. I am a new patient of hers and I am so grateful that I found her. She has reviewed old records of mine and found stuff my other dr. should have found years ago. more

Fantastic experience 3/1/2009

I had a great experience with Dr Selick and for that matter with the entire office despite major difficulties in becoming pregnant. I always found Dr Selick to be straightforward and I appreciated that. I feel like we went through a lot together and the attention she gave me made the whole IVF process much more manageable. I now have two babies and feel I owe it to her and my other regular doctor, Amy Bloomgarden, an outstanding doctor as well. Dr Selick can be very direct and I could see why this could be mistaken for insensitivity but I see it more as a way to not give false expectations. more

The person who gave her 5 stars was referring to a diff doc 2/28/2009

The person who wrote the review entitled "Very nice female gyn" I believe was referring to Dr. Bloomgarden, not Dr. Selick. Dr. Selick is not a gyn - she only does fertility issues. She doesn't prescribe contraception etc. Dr. Bloomgarden is great, I can see why you gave her 5 stars. Dr. Selick however, is nothing like her. She is absolutely horrible. more

Knowledgeable Doctor 1/26/2009

Dr. Selick is tremendously knowledgeable and diagnosed my PCOS quickly and accurately. While it is true that you have to "be on top of" the office if you need medical records, etc., I have found the nurses are good about answering questions over the phone. The staff is very friendly. You WILL wait a very long time if you come in the middle of the day. I am talking 2 to 3 hours. But this is not unusual for doctors offices in Manhattan. I think Dr. Selick is professional and appreciates a patient that has done her homework so that you can have an intelligent conversation about your condition and asks you what YOU want so that you can manage your care with her. I am very happy/impressed with her as my doctor. more

love Dr Selick and love my new twins 12/31/2008

Dr. Selick is excellent- I got her name from a friend who successfully has had two children after working with her (AND not with any fertility intervention!!! Just a thorough work-up and DIRECT not RUDE information). I myself am a new mom of twins (first try at IVF- thanks Dr. Selick). If you ask Dr. Selick tough questions, you'll get straight answers, even if they aren't what you want to hear. She is efficient and gets the job done. Best of all, I think I missed about 2 hours of work total- she and her office accomodated my travel schedule for work, the times I forgot to make a follow-up appt, everything. I love her- have and will continue to recommend her and her office highly. Barbara was great too. more

Dr Selick and staff were wonderful! 12/19/2008

We just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy thanks to Dr Selick and her staff. IVF is a stressful experience perhaps most of these reviewers are over sensitive because of it. She's a talented and knowledgeable doctor who is extremely caring and her staff is very supportive. Thanks Dr. Selick! more

The worst experience ever 12/18/2008

Rude, inconsiderate, uncaring, uncommunicative... I could go on. But for a doctor to convey only negative attributes to a patient in less than 30 minutes is amazing. I felt like cattle. I will NEVER go back this doctor and am seriously considering leaving the practice altogether because of this experience, although I find my regular doctor to be very smart. I am new to New York and have lived around the world, and never have I encountered a less sensitive human being. more

Terrible experience 12/9/2008

My husband and I have just finished our first IVF cycle with doctor Selick and it was a truelly horrible experience. Not only were they rude and made me cry after i had pain following a procedure but were annoyed and curt when I asked any questions. On top of that it took me several calls to get my pregnancy test results and then was given misinformation. I would highly recommend that you stay away from this doctor at all costs. more

Absolutely HORRIBLE 11/16/2008

Good: Nothing. Bad: Everything. Improvements: Her license revoked or intensive training on how to interact with patients.. more

Excellent Doctor 6/5/2008

I've been seeing Dr. Selick for 6 months for some really complicated issues that my Ob/Gyn just didn't understand. She has been really thorough and was able to put me on the right treatment program after a complete workup. She's direct and efficient and really accommodating. I've been able to get in and out of the office for early morning appoints on a regular basis so I don't miss work. I needed surgery and she was able to perform it and it came out really well. I was so relieved to find her after going through other doctors who have less experience and/or less familiarity with all the issues that can impact on fertility. Barbara was great, too. Very well informed and personable. I talked to a lot of other women about their doctor's and experiences with IVF and some programs don't even have a coordinator and patients have to wait hours to fit in to the daily exam schedule. I've had to wait for consultation meetings, but never for tests or exams. I would (and have) recommend her to anyone having fertility issues. more

in defense of barbara 6/2/2008

I cannot speak for Dr. Selick (I'm a regular patient of her partner Dr. Amy Bloomgarden - who is fabulous, by the way), but I can defend Barbara, the office manager. I spoke with her this morning in a bit of crisis, and she was kind, patient and knowledgeable. I just made another call to her (and I imagine it's the busiest part of the day) - and she walked me though yet another development in my situation. She all but saved my sanity today - and I'm glad to have this office on my side. more

Horrible, mixed up files 5/21/2008

The last 3 times I went to the office, I waited over an hour each time, was treated horribly and left almost crying. The nurses were mean, they bring up all these issues that don't really matter to you. Finally, when I decided to see another doctor, I asked for my medical records. It took a few weeks and about $30 later, they mailed me my records. When I opened them, I saw they sent me the WRONG PERSON's medical record, which is a HUGE invasion of privacy. They were apologetic and worried. I felt so bad for the person whose records I received, I just shredded them right away. After years of going to Dr. Selick, I will never go back. more

I can't believe what I'm reading 5/1/2008

I LOVE Dr. Selick and Barbara too. They were always nice to me and my partner and we never had issues with either one of them. They were always willing to work around our schedule, and though sometimes we had to wait we always got the time we needed to answer any questions and we always felt respected. Without Dr. Selicks help we would not have our beautiful precious princess, who just celebrated her first birthday...so THANK YOU DR. SELICK!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU BARBARA!!!!!!! We love you both... more

Dr. Caryn Selick's office is a factory 4/16/2008

Dr. Caryn Selick's office is run like a factory where patients go in and out. Some of her key support staffers are malcontents, stressed by the pressure so unwilling to be helpful or cheerful. During one of my visits for an IUI, (Intra-uterine insemination) on a day Dr. Selick was out of the office, I wanted to change patient rooms, because there was a loud noise coming from a printer in a near by office and I noticed there was another patient room available. The nurses acted like I was being overly sensitive and pretended that it was not important. They finally relented after my third request. The experience made me feel humiliated that I had to beg for such a simple request. And more importantly, this is not a good atmosphere for an IUI procedure. I recently saw a patient crying in Dr. Selick's waiting room. She explained to me that the biller told her that she had lost her right to an apointment that day to see Dr. Selick because she had forgotten her health insurance card and the biller refused to call the health insurance company to check the validity of the card. This patient, with tears of frustation said that she had booked her appointment 3 months ago and swore her insurance was valid. I could not believe that a doctor's office would have such a stringent policy but to my surprise when I was leaving the office I saw a sign by the receptionist desk which I had never noticed before. It did state that you lose your appointment if you forget your insurance card. These situations tell me there is something seriously wrong with the way Dr. Selick runs her office. more

Better look for a different doctor 3/30/2008

My wife and I had a terrible experience with Dr. Selick and her nurse, Barbara. We have been reluctant to tell others about it since we don’t want to slander anybody, but it’s interesting to see that there seems to be a pattern and that we are not unique in our critique. We went to Dr. Selick for our second round of infertility treatment; our first office visit should have set off an alarm already. We were required to take a class with Barbara, Dr. Selick’s head nurse, to go over the drugs for the treatment cycle, how to administer them, etc. Mind you, we had done a cycle just a couple of months prior after which we successfully froze a few embryos, but we appreciated being reminded of everything. Barbara was extremely unpleasant to deal with. She was unfriendly, clearly didn’t want to be bothered, was disinterested in us and her job and on top of that, she had the audacity to question why we were even trying infertility treatment, expressing her very negative opinions about it and our chances, even though we’re still in our 30's. Someone in her position should be supportive to couples trying to have a baby, not bring them down! The instructions Barbara gave us differed from our first cycle as far as the amount of certain drugs were concerned, and even when asking her about it, she assured us that they were correct. To make a long story short, she made a mistake on one of the drug dosages and we were unsuccessful in harvesting any eggs in our 2nd round because of it. The experience with Dr. Selick mirrored what other posters here have experienced. She always rushes through her appointments, is very hard to get a hold off otherwise, often is annoyed by questions and is overall not pleasant to deal with. And she allows her nurse, Barbara, to get away with extremely unprofessional behavior. Additionally, the office tends to mischarge your insurance carrier and expects you to pay higher fees than necessary, so one needs to double check ALL invoices. Do yourself a favor and look for a different doctor. more

Awful 3/18/2008

Dr. Caryn Selick pushed me into treatments I didn't need and provided no options beyond what she was pushing. Her assistant is incredibly rude and I always waited over 90 minutes to see the doc. Caryn Selick rushed me during our appointments and had a really bad attitude on top of it. Stay far, far, far way from this doctor and the entire practice. more

Horrible experience 3/17/2008

This was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a doctor. I agree with other posters that say she is rushed and rude and makes you feel stupid for asking a question or asking her to repeat herself and/or slow down. I have PCOS and tried for one month on metformin before she recommended I go on clomid, get the shots, and be inseminated. I thought it was a bit fast to move to those measures when I had only been on metformin for one month. I decided to get a second opinion and thank god i did. the new doc told me that it usually takes 4 - 6 months for metformin to start working, and that i have many options beyond what Dr. Selick presented. I stayed with metformin for another month and got pregnant very quickly, on my own, no clomid. Looking back, i can't blieve dr. selick presented clomid and insemination as my only options. she is a horrible doctor and i advise all those to stay away from her. more

not sure what to think 1/26/2008

I have been going to her for fertility treatments and the truth is she is always rushed and seems mostly annoyed by the patient if what she is saying is not understood the first time around . I am going to give a little more time to her to see if she is going to be able to help me conceive as i already started with her. What bothers me more than Dr. Selick is her nurse Rebecca. She does not say hi or asks how you are doing and is she does that , her tone is so fake ! Her billing people are equally inpatient with patients ... more
