Regina Rules 5/17/2012

Regina has been responsible for my hair for over 15 years. I made the mistake of cheating on her once. I looked ridiculous. As an actor and model, she's helped me look my best. Whether you have specific ideas, or just want a good cut, Regina will give you exactly what you want, or something better. Regina should be on a list of Best of Broadway. more

Rita's Amazing Color!! 4/12/2012

Ever since I began going to Rita for my color, highlights, and cut, people literally stop me on the street and ask who does my hair. Her artistry and talent with creating the most natural, beautiful, highlights is unmatched. She took my over-processed, way-too-blonde hair and wove in warm honey tones with shimmery golden blonde to create the prettiest colors I've ever seen. She also shapes and layers my hair so that it's pure perfection each and every time I go to style it—weeks, even months later. She's a true artist and also one of the sweetest, funniest people you'll ever met. more

Alberto is the best 4/3/2012

I've been getting my haircut by Alberto at Astor Place for 15 years now and I've been going to Astor Place for 19 years. To say Alberto is the best is an understatement. He is thorough, creative and fun. Feeling chatty? Talk about whatever you like, sports, weather, girls, hair, music. Feeling sleep? Just relax and let Alberto do all the work. I trust this man so much, I haven't asked him to do anything in over a decade, he just knows what is hot and what looks good based on your head size, hair color and style. You might have to wait, but it's worth it. This man is an artist and a master barber. You've tried all the rest, now try the best. more

I've had better. 3/14/2012

After I finished work, say around 830 or so I decided I wanted to cut off this annoying mop that I have been experimenting growing. I simply dont have the patience to keep growing it past this "in between stage". I cant take it anymore! Plus I did a quick length survey on facebook and twitter and all replies said "short". I hope they meant my haircut. Ahem, ahem. Okay! So being from NYC I know that in the downtown area one of the more reliable places for a quick decent haircut is Astor Cuts. I've gone here several times over the years, and as far as the haircut itself goes, I've not been disappointed for the most part. Upon descending into the depths of the shop I was greeted by an older gentleman, he asked "you want a haircut", I said yes, then I asked my usual question "do you know how to do a proper fade sir"? I observe the body language eyes and the reaction overall as they answer. It was apparent to me quickly that this gentleman would not know how to give me a proper fade. After he confirmed what I already knew he asked one of the other guys to trade customers. Marcello was tired and wanted to go home, initially he tried to pass me off to another guy, but after a moment he agreed to cut my hair. I said dude, if you need to go, then go. (According to them a fade takes longer and it's harder to do, in his defense he started at 830am.) He said it's ok he would do it. Fine, let's move on. We didn't talk much, he was mostly all business. So about 20 or so minutes later I had an ok fade and was looking fresh. I gave him a tip and thanked him for staying around late to cut my hair. We shook hands and I moved to the front to pay. When I got up front there was a large gentleman with his back to the "greeting" area speaking with a woman about how some people are happy with the service and some are not. "When you see 100 people a day some are bound to be unhappy with something." I stood there for a few moments without being acknowledged, I wondered if I made to walk out without paying if he would talk to me then? Personally I think he was being rude. While talking about how sometimes customers are "not happy" with service, he in turn created another unhappy customer. After a few more moments I decided to stop waiting for them to greet me, and I interrupted their intense conversation. I said "sorry guys, but is this where we pay, seems like it, but based on what's happening I'm not sure?" He reached for the charge paper, still not acknowledging me or even turning around, he continued talking to the woman. He looked at the paper, then put it down, and held his hand out. I fished in my wallet for the fifteen dollars they charge for the haircut, he continued talking and moved his hand as if he were impatiently waiting for me. Really? I put the money down on the counter and walked out. I stopped being polite at that point and kept it moving, I didn't say thank you, I didn't wait for him to pick up the cash or count it, nada, whatever big boy, you want to be rude, I can be rude too. The haircut experience overall was ok, except for the feeling like I was a burden when paying and during the customer shuffle early on. Also now that I am home as I look closely I found several stray hairs in the areas of my head visible to me, so I found myself in front of the mirror with scissors clipping away. After showering I saw that the front of my head is uneven as well, this is more troubling because now I'll have to go to my local spot and have them fix it. So in essence I'll be paying 2 times for 1 haircut. This is not good. I wonder if there are more strays or problems in the areas I cannot see? The bad exit experience and slightly less than great haircut doesn't make paying extra money worth it. Maybe if the overall experience was great then I'd feel it's worth it to pay a bit more. more

Go to Regina 2/26/2012

Gotta agree with the reviewer below me - Regina is indeed, THE BEST. I sought Regina on my second visit to Astor Place due to all the amazing recommendations I read online. And I gotta say, she is completely worthy of her reputation. I showed her a few pictures of the cut I wanted, and the result was amazing! It was a difficult cut, but she aced it. I'll go to her again and again. more

Regina is the best 2/10/2012

I went to Astor Place hair for nearly a year and got a simple cut from whoever was available, and then one day was lucky enough to get Regina and have seen her regularly for the past six years. The first time I sat in her chair, I didn't even tell her what I wanted--she just went to work and gave me the best haircut I have ever had. I wouldn't dream of seeing anyone else. She's very popular and very busy, so when you walk in, you may have to wait 15-20 minutes, but she's well worth it. more

Alberto 2/4/2012

I have been going to Alberto since I was 16. To say thus man has become a part of my life is amazing. Aside from the great cuts I have gotten from him over the years, He has served as a mentor to me in life. I value his friendship in ways that words will not be justified to him. Gracias mi amigo!!!! He truly is an institution at the shop. He does great work and offers a great time. Go ans see him, trust me, even if he is busy, its not hard for him to sell himself. His rep there is second to none there more

Big problem with Noemi 1/25/2012

After my usual stylist moved out of the city, I wanted to try somewhere new. I decided to try Astor Place for the first time since it seems like it’s been around forever. They're local and cheap and so I figured why not? I walked right in off the street since appointments there are not necessary and I was sent to a hairdresser named Noemi who the guy up front recomended. Right away I explained to Noemi that I wanted to keep as much length of my long brown hair as possible and to just give me some more layers, she said, "I know exactly what to do with your hair," which apparently meant whatever she wanted. Within a few snips of her scissors she chopped several inches off my hair - much more than I asked for - and the front layers turned out so short that I couldn't even pull them into a low ponytail, which is essential for workouts. Also, the layers didn't blend in the front at all and the entire style looked very choppy and uneven. I was really shocked and upset when she was done with me. It was not what asked for at all, no one would want this! There was an obvious language barrier right from the start but I figured she knew enough English to follow some simple instructions. Obviously she didn't. That night I had to pull my hair up into a ponytail to workout, which is when I realized how bad the cut truly was. My hair was severely lopsided and even the thickness of it was very different on both sides. One whole section hung down at least 2" longer than the rest. It looked ridiculous. On a scale of 1 to 10, my haircut was a 2 at best. There are a few ingredients that even a decent stylist must have: Be a good listener, ask the proper questions and obviously have some skill to your profession. Oh yeah, a personality would help as well. Noemi has none of those, she is a "one and done" for me. more

NOEMI ROCKS! 1/16/2012

So I took my 16 yr old son in for his NYC visit to get his usual fabulous haircut from Giovanni. While waiting, I saw a new girl finishing up the most NYC edgy style on a girl. The haircut was really great! On a whim I asked her if she had another client waiting and since she didn't, I threw caution to the wind and said Help Me, I have Upstate Hair and I hate the cut. Noemi sat me down in her chair and did things that I never had done. Measuring with her comb, sectioning my hair, twirling, snipping, hair flying everywhere a la Edward Scissorhands. After about 40 minutes she turned me to the mirror and voila, a new me! Noemi has recently arrived from Sicily and I feel like I went to Italy and came back with a new hairstyle! I look at least 10 years younger! LOVE HER! more

MERCEDES is AWESOME! 1/11/2012

I got my hair cut from Mercedes yesterday. I was accompanied by my sister and aunt. Initially we had decided that only I am going to get a haircut. But after how Mercedes cut my hair ... my sister and aunt ended up cutting their hair too :-D. She did a great job on all our hair dos. I was so shocked by her talent because this was my first visit to Astor and did not know what to expect. The place is a little run-down so I was scared in the beginning ...but once she blow-dried my hair after the cut. My hair looked fabulous. We are all soooooooo excited about our new haircuts and loving it !!! She is a very friendly, sweet and makes you feel comfortable. Thank you :-) more

A very bad experience with Noemi and Astor Place Hair 1/8/2012

I wish I would of saw all of the bad reviews here for Noemi before I walked into Astor Place. I could of saved my hair, my money and a couple of hours that I will never get back! She was without question one the least skilled, most abrasive and downright classless and unattractive hairdressers I have ever seen! I really can't believe she even has a job as a stylist. I mean really, is the management there just not aware of just how bad she is considering all the complaints about her? I should never have stepped foot in that dump of a place. And trust me, it is a dump! If you've ever been there you know what I'm talking about. I went in there looking for color and highlites and they sent me to Noemi's chair saying she defintely the one I want to do my hair, that she has a lot of experience as a colorist. I went in there as a pretty brunette and she turned my once healthy head of hair into a greenish-red stringy mop and I also got a badly burned scalp to boot! My hair is ruined. After she tortured me into embarrassment, she then tried telling me that my hair looked really good and that she also wanted to cut my hair as well. She kept pressuring me into additional hair services, going on about how she knows her business. This girl has some nerve after what she did. She never stops talking and has no regard to her customers well being. She basically uses peoples hair as some sort of science experiment and then tries to bully you into something you don't even want! This type of behavior to a paying customer should not be tolerated. I should have picked a real hair salon with better reviews where there are quality, experienced stylists. I was just trying to save a little money because times are tough and I ended up getting burned! I will never make that mistake again. Now I have to walk around with a hat on my head until I can get my hair corrected. Take my advice, I would not go there if I were you. more

Noami is a nightmare! 1/3/2012

Friends recommended Astor Place for high quality, and cost efficent cut. I came in on a Friday afternoon before New Years for a fresh new look was was sent to Noami. Not only did she pay no mind whatsoever to what I wanted, but kept on insisting she knew what would look best on me. She couldnt have been more wrong. I walked out with what I would consider the worst cut ever and an even worse experience. Rude, self absored, and talentless hair dressers are not my idea of a great experience. Very disappointed ! more

Regina Saved my hair !! 1/3/2012

Years of bad haircuts, and wasted money, I've finally real talent at a price that didnt break the bank. I've been going with the same cut for years...boring, out of fashion, and overpriced. As soon as I sat into Regina's chair I knew I was in good hands. 25 min after meeting her, I fell in love with her and my hair. I had a sleek new cut, a great blowdry that made my hair shine, and a great feeling filled with confidence. Thank you to a worldclass stylist...I will be back !! more

Noemi is My Hair Hero 12/28/2011

I'm not very good with hair/cosmetics, and have traditionally gone with the simplest possible haircuts; I like the way other people look with wild hairstyles but always assumed I couldn't handle styling it (and I didn't even know what to ask for). Noemi's energy and intuition finally pushed me to go for "fun" hair, and I am thrilled! If you hold yourself back because you're style-challenged but want to go crazy, Noemi's your gal. I went in for a cut & color with only a vague idea of what I wanted; it was my first professional dye job so I was kind of clueless. I showed Noemi colors I was thinking about, which she warned would probably clash with my skin tone. She understood the type of look I was going for, though, and went through some other options with me. She was right - my hair looks dope - and she also gave me a great cut (plus walked me through some simple tips on styling it, which I desperately needed). Overall, a great experience - I LOVE my hair, the price was right, and I actually had fun! more

Noemi: No talent, No class! 12/28/2011

Just a warning to anyone going to this place for the first time. If you get a hairdresser named Noemi, ask for someone else immediately! Noemi gave me probably the worst haircut I have ever gotten in my life! I showed her a photo of a simple hairstyle I wanted and she butchered my head like a piece of meat. One side is layered too much - one side isn't layered enough. She gave me bangs when I said I didn't want bangs - and to top it off my bangs are totally crooked! She seems to have no styling skills at all! I could have cut my own hair better! I actually just saw a few other posts here that also complained about her so I know it's not just me. One of the customer reviews I read said she isn't even licensed which I totally believe after experiencing the butcher job she gave me. I should have known right from the start something was wrong with her since the people at the front desk practically forced me into her chair. She is not only bad with the scissors but her communication and people skills are ridiculously inept. She has only been in the country for a few weeks and speaks terrible English which makes it impossible to get your point across without feeling uneasy. She is also completely unattentive while slicing your hair to bits, she stares at herself in the mirror constantly and gabs and yells at whoever walks by. The girl is a trainwreck! I am so angry and so upset at the treatment I got in this place, its very frustrating throwing away hard earned money. Now I have to find someone to fix this mess. Go somewhere else, PLEASE!!!! more

GRAZIE, NOEMI !!!!!!! :) 12/21/2011

I went to Astor Place last weekend for a colour correction. My hair was blue-grey and I was having a terrible day and just wanted to fix it. Well, I came to the right place. The Astor Place Hair Designers have never failed me, but Noemi definitely deserves a shout out. I showed her a picture of what my hair used to look like (medium natural blonde), explained that i've been dying it very light (think ultra platinum), that i tried going back to my roots, so to speak, and that it turned out terribly (the last part was plainly visible). I told her that I never wanted to dye it again, so she advised me to go one shade darker than what we eventually want my result to be since i had bleached it so light underneath: in six weeks' time, when it would usually be time to touch up, the darker shade would lighten up a bit and I'd never have to worry about it again. It looked a bit dark but I trusted Noemi and I am so glad that I did!!! She was totally spot on!! I was so pleased with the colour I asked if I could stay in the chair for a quick trim to fix up the shape and snip off the dead ends. My hair looks so healthy and natural now!! The cut and colour are really awesome! I have gotten so many compliments!! Thank you Noemi for fixing my hair and making my weekend!! more

  • A village legend, this no-frills, family-owned hair salon hasn't spent a penny on advertising--or, apparently, on interior design upgrades--since opening its doors. What Astor does have is a massive reputation for inexpensive, quality service on a walk-in basis. It's also a gigantic melting pot, where teens, celebs, Wall Street execs and soon-to-be punk NYU freshman unite in the common goal of good hair. Eighty-eight stylists specialize in everything from fades, etchings, color (punk to traditional) and curly styles to hair extensions, weaves and braiding.
