AFTER SEEING SO MANY GREAT REVIEWS ABOUT MARTHA I HAD TO SEE FOR MYSELF HOW GOOD SHE WAS. I WENT LAST WEEK AND REQUESTED TO HAVE MY HAIR DONE BY MARTHA. SHE IS A VERY NICE LADY. MY HAIR WAS A MESS. I ASKED HER WHAT SHOULD I DO? SHE SUGGESTED I DYED MY HAIR A LIGHT BROWN WITH BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS AND I LOVE IT . I've been going to Astor for about 17 years now. I've always gotten a good cut there no matter who I went to. Jose has been cutting my hair for about 8 years now and he always asks me how I want it and he does exactly what you want. He makes my thin, baby fine hair look good. He's good, he's quick and I highly recommend him. Jose is also a good colorist. You need color, Jose is your man. Fran always does a great job on my hair. But when she was gone having her baby I went to someone else who burnt and bleached my entire head of hair. Not easy to fix. When Fran came back she fixed it completely in two visits. Now it looks healthy and natural. Fran is the best...Maureen Pros: Fixed my hair after an over zealous bleach job. more

GO TO FRAN! So it's about 8:30 at night one random evening, and I decide to make a drastic change. I walk into Astor Hair and Fran, though about to leave, graciously agrees to take me in. I had very long, damaged blond hair that I wanted chopped all off into a pixie cut and dyed some kind of brown color. I show her four different photos of the idea (Shannyn Sossoman, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Katie Holmes) and say "something like this that will work on me". She takes one look, and with wit, enthusiasm, smiles and attitude, transforms my hair into something INCREDIBLE. the major cut, style PLUS color was only $75. FAR less than I have ever paid and such a tremendous experience letting her do it- she's so fun and an amazing stylist. bottom line.. GO TO FRAN. I am sooooo beyond happy with what she did for me, with hardly any description from me and nothing but a glance at a photo. she even chose the color of it herself because I had no idea. and it was exactly what it needed to be. she's immensely talented and a joy to sit in the chair for! plus, she just got back from maternity leave and she needs to support her baby boy :-) Pros: variety of stylists, affordable, laid-back, quick Cons: if you want the ambiance of a "salon", then astor isnt 4 u more

I decided to try this place due to the great things I read about it on citysearch. I went in, they directed me to a hair stylist right away - Irma. She was great. I told her briefly what I wanted (6 inches off, with layering in the back and to frame my face), and she did it in less than 15 minutes for $25. How can you beat that?!? She also offered to highlight my whole head for $100 more but I wasn't interested at the time, though I'm definitely considering going back for that. It was a great experience, super fast, and dirt cheap. Loved it!! Only thing is that it doesn't have a chic ambiance as it's a large room with many stylists in a warehouse sort of way, but who needs the extra flair, more importantly, who wants to pay for the flair. Great place, highly recommend for anyone wanting a fast and great haircut for cheap. Pros: fast, cheap, great haircut! Cons: none more

Martha is aweseome. I can sit in her chair and give her a general idea of what I want, and she always gives me exactly what I want. She is always charming and great to talk to. She truly is one of the best stylists in New York. more

I went to see Jose after seeing all the good reviews he had on here... and I was pleasantly surprised ! He was very down to earth, which I was very happy about ! I was used to the snobby upper east siders so it was a nice surprise to meet someone like him.. and I went in for a haircut but I also ended up getting highlights too :) The price was very reasonable and now I get all these compliments on my hair :) I will definitely go back soon !! Years ago I highlighted my hair and the result was pretty disastrous; I vowed to never do such a thing to my hair again. Until Rita came along. . . I've been going to Rita for about a year now and I just love her. To indicate how much I trust her: I started out with mid-back length hair, and now I have a short, very layered cut that goes just slightly past my chin. Last week, I finally decided to complete my transformation and asked her to highlight my hair. Instead of my usual jet black hair, I now have dark brown hair with copper highlights and I just LOVE my new look. Rita has always sent me away feeling great about myself; she has never failed me and I trust her implicitly. For that reason, for as long as we are both in the NYC area, I will continue going to her. My stylist is the best, this woman will do whatever you need to be done to your hair. She has cut, colored, and highlighted my hair. I've have stuck with her because Martha does wonders! Plus she understands what the customer wants which is something major with me. I don't like it when hair stylist do what they want and not what the customer wants. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND MARTHA more

For the past 4 years NARCY at Astor Place has been cutting/straightening/styling my hair. She is fast, reliable, detail oriented and the most friendly hairstylist I have ever had. i went to astor place after reading the great reviews on rita. i have probably been to rita less than ten times. she is nice. respectful. professional and you can get an appointment quick. i went cause of the great reviews and to get my lopsided hair fixed. she did a great job at fixing my hair so i returned. my hair is fine with a slight wave not quite a curl. i wear it straight most of the time. i was please that she was able to fix my hair. i returned for my next appointment and she used a razor to cut it(she did the first time but not as much). i haven't had a hair person use a razor on my hair in 20 years..but i thought what the heck. she used the razor to cut and shape my hair. the hairstyle was a bit dated but in some weird way it also kind worked ( though no one complimented me). BUT becasue she used a razor on my fine hair it left it frayed, thin and damaged looking when it was wet. i was unable to leave it to air dry. the next few times i went back i asked for no razor. this is when i discovered she had NO SKILL or flair with the scissors what so ever. i really felt she had a hard time. in return i got a head full of layers..and a very round shape but too round...again...leaning towards that dated look. i hate to admit it...but it's the sort of look that sean cassidy was rockin in the 70's. layers all over with the back of the hair long and hugging my neck. short by the ears. god. well i will never go back. not with my fine hair. razors are for people with thick hair that needs to be thinned out. i am not mad. she's a nice lady. surrounded by an insane amount of hype that really is too good to be true!!! I first went to Jose over two years ago. He's the best that I've been to in the six years I've lived in the city. I stopped going to him for a little while to find someone in my neighborhood in Brooklyn, but that was a big mistake. Jose is the best and it's definitely worth the trip to see him. And not only does Jose give a great hair cut, but he's a great guy, too. more

“Love your hair color and hair cut” that’s the compliments a get ALL the time, privatly, on the street or networking. Jose at Astor Place as been my Maestro for 10 years and I am VERY picky business lady. He’s super nice to work with, very talented and A true professional. He's very cool! I've been going to Astor for over 14 years now. I enjoy getting my hair cut by Alberto more than ever. I could go on here about why he has customers waiting while other barbers are sitting in their own chairs, but the reason is obvious and his reputation precedes him. What I will tell you is that this was once a great place that the owners have let go to sh*t. I suspect this is a generational thing, I doubt the old man would accept the attitude that prevails there now. Let me explain: While I understand that this place never was and shouldn't become a fancy chi chi salon, there is no reason to have filthy bathrooms that reek of piss when there is so much money flowing through the business. You can't do a minor renovation and hire someone to keep them clean?!! There is such a cheap, dirty air about the entire place that it is becoming a turnoff. I understand it shouldn't be wall-to-wall marble, but again with the amount of money the owners make it's an insult that they can't do a reasonable renovation, add a few comfortable chairs for waiting customers, etc... If it were not for the customer loyalty that some of the stylists have built nobody but tourist a**holes who don't know any better would come here anymore. If the owners are reading (and I know you do read these reviews...), man up and stop being so cheap and detached before you totally destroy a very successful business that has become a legend in NY. And try to smile and at least pretend you give a sh*t when I pay for a haircut instead of looking at me and everyone else like an ATM..... Pros: Good, inexpensive cuts, great conversation. Rita was wonderful at listening to what I wanted and really worked with me on creating a style I love. She didn't want to chop off my long hair, but instead shaped it in a way that made it versatile and ridiculously hot. The amount of compliments I've gotten in the two days since my haircut are the most I've ever received. She's also incredibly personable and funny, making the entire experience a lot of fun. Also, her price was so reasonable considering the length of my hair- about $40 less than I would have paid anywhere else. Being on a student's budget, this was a godsend! Rita rocks!
