Astor Place Hairstylists

I went to Astor Place looking to get spruced up for the holidays. I read such positive reviews and wanted to go to Irma or Rosa. I have thick Spanish hair and read they're really great with hair like mine. The big fat guy at the front insisted I go to NOEMI that she's the best. I wanted to touch up my grays so I asked her to match my dark brown hair. She used the wrong color and lightened it instead. MY HAIR IS ORANGE,One side of my hair is 1 inch shorter than the other. I have choppy layers because she used the razor when I asked her not to. Anyone who knows hair like mine knows you can't cut it the way she did. I'm a secretary in an office and cannot go to work like this. I complained to the front and this little guy -never got his name, said there was nothing wrong with my hair! My appearance is important to my bosses and now I have to figure out how to fix this. I'm upset because she didn't listen and then the guy wouldn't help me. What kind of a plkace doesn't let you go to who you want then ruins your hair and tells you that YOU"RE THE ONE WHO'S WRONG?????????? I'M SO UPSET, Save your money, avoid the place. more

I've been to Noemi a couple times to have my hair cut and I'm always so happy and impressed with the way she cuts my hair and the end result. Noemi has a great personality and lots of energy and ideas. She's passionate about her work. She listens to what I want and makes suggestions but I mostly let her take over because I always know I'll leave the salon with a cut that I love. I was cutting my own hair for years because I had a super short pixie cut but now I'm getting it cut professionally because I'd like to grow out. I will continue to go to Noemi for as long as I can. She's the best! more

My first – and last – experience with Astor Place Hair was an absolute nightmare and I will never go back! I am writing this so others don’t go through the same horrible experience as as I did. I walked into Astor Place this past weekend looking for some nice new color and highlites for the holidays. They sent me to a girl named Noemi who as it turns out was by far the worst hairdresser I have ever been to in my life! I should have known immediately she would be a problem since she barely spoke English and had no idea what I was saying and to top it off, she was extremely rude and completely annoying. She basically ignored anything I said and kept talking loudly over me and to other hairdressers as if I wasn’t even there. I asked her very nicely to simply lighten my roots to match the rest of my blonde hair. Immediately after she applied the color I felt a weird and horrible burning sensation that felt like battery acid on my head! I told her my scalp was really burning and I was extremely uncomfortable. She said in her thick accent to “no worry, I know what I’m doing” or something to that effect. At this point I was really nervous at what the outcome would be and it only got worse from there. Noemi kept babbling on about herself and told me she was from Italy and blah, blah, blah - great, but when I asked her if she was licensed here, she said. “No, not yet, I am just practicing until I get license!!!”. I could not believe I was sitting in the chair of an unlicensed hairdresser who barely knows any English at all! I was in some kind of hell! As soon as the color processed I noticed my hair was this weird burnt orange and green color that looked just hideous! It was nowhere close to the beautiful blonde color that would have matched the rest of my hair. At this point I was almost in tears. I could not believe this was happening to me! Even after I complained she kept saying my hair looked good to her. I was like are you crazy, look at me! It looked like a child colored my hair with paint! I had never seen such inept work from a stylist in my life! I ran out of her chair as fast as I could and I also complained to a short man with glasses who said he was a manager, but he was also very rude and abrupt with me and said there was nothing he could do and that I had to pay for my hair even though it was completely ruined! When I got home I was so upset when I looked at myself in the mirror, not only is the color just horrible but now my hair as been breaking off in clumps and my scalp is red and itchy and burning! Now I need to find a place to try and fix this mess and spend yet more money! I am absolutely going to report Astor Place to the Better Business Bureau and to the New York State Board of Cosmetology for employing unlicensed hairdressers. My husband also wants to sue them for how I was treated. What a horrible place, dirty and dingy and like a total madhouse inside with no regard at all for their clients. Avoid Noemi and Astor Place Hair at all costs!!! Go to a salon where there are licensed professionals who know what they are doing. I wish I would have. more

I routinely get my hair cut at Astor Place - it's exciting and genuinely cool. This past time, Noemi cut my hair. She is incredible! She had just arrived back from Italy where, as she said, she goes every three or four months to pick up the latest styles. I wasn't really sure what I wanted, but Noemi knew exactly how to work with my hair and face shape to create a style that's both beautiful and very manageable/ easy to do at home. I can't stand when your hair looks amazing at the salon and then you can never get it to look that same way again, but this wasn't the case here. Noemi gave me a simple procedure to create the same luscious, voluminous look that has proven to work. I will definitely ask for her next time I go! more

Visited Astor Place as a walk in with my daughter. We were immediately sent to Noemi. She greeted us warmly it was as if she knew us for years. Noemi was very attentive when my daughter explained what she wanted. My 13 year old didnt show her a picture but Noemi knew exactly what she wanted! Cut and blow dry came out gorgeous, and my daughter was extremely satisfied. Spent a lot less than any other salon in NYC. Definitely will return. Noemi is a sweetheart. more

i have been going to astor place for 20yrs. the person i was using left. luckily i found irma who cuts my hair and does my color and highlights. i feel very lucky and i highly recommend her. she does beautiful work! more

Get your hair cut with Mercedes, she will always get it right. If you bring a picture with you, she does the best job at recreating it. She is super friendly, loves to laugh, and will work with you to craft a new hair style that looks awesome. more

Our whole family gets their hair styled at Astor Place. Regina is the best. She has great suggestions if you want to change and she is so easy to work with. I get complements from friends who spend hundreds to get their hair cut at other places. go to Regina you won't be sorry. more

I go to Fran since many many years for cut 'n colour, every 6 weeks. And I need to travel quite a bit to see her (I'm from Amsterdam, Holland)! She is just great, real New York, quick, loud, extremely professional! I just love her! The best compliment I ever got was when I was shopping in Amsterdam, Holland, when a girl came to me, touched my hair and asked me about where in Amsterdam I had my hair done. I said, I have my hair done in New York City, by the only hairdresser in the whole world that's perfect: Fran!!!!!!!!! So just go Fran!!!!!!!!! more

Mercedes is the very best! Best hair cut I've ever had. It's the good looking everytime, very reliable and consistently great . She's truly gives a great haircut, I recommend 100%! more

I walked in for the first time on Friday afternoon not sure what to expect. I was seen immediately by Noemi. So happy I got her! I told her what I was looking for and she totally got it right - even with a little language barrier! She was so sweet and fast! My cut/style was hip and just what I wanted. Got the cut in half the time and price. Thank you Noemi!!!! I'll be back!! more

I never had a better cut, I tried forever to get a good cut and it took me 1200 miles to do it on a visit back to NY to visit my family and I looked great thanks to my favorite stylist Fran, everyone there was very nice and Fran was awesome, I would def recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!! I've been going to fran for 5 years now. I live in upstate ny and I will travel to nyc just to get my hair done because fran is the only one I trust with my hair. She does incredible color effects with my hair and I will alway recommand her to any of my friends. So if u want creattive work go to fran! more

Once you get highlights/ hair dyed by Fran you'll be hooked. She's absolutely the best around. After having my hair screwed up at another salon I was sceptical about getting my hair dyed again. But FRAN put my fears to rest.... I'll never go to another hairdresser again. more

I've been going to Astor Place Hair Designers since 2007. Always to the same person, Fran. She is a magnificent hair stylist, and she always knows what I want. Located in the Village, this salon is wonderful. Franny is very attentive and has always gotten my hair cuts right the first time. She is also an extremely skilled colourist, so if you want to try a new hair colour she's your girl. I highly recommended her. She's extremely versatile when it comes to hair cuts. She's amazing with edgy cuts but also with more toned down cuts as well. If you're looking to change your look, Astor Place is the way to go. more

Astor Hair is the best place to get a haircut in NYC! I have gone to numerous high end salons in the city and been very unhappy with my cut. Go to Astor Hair!! You will love it! Make sure to go to FRAN! Fran is so friendly and welcoming, and she takes the time to find out how I want my hair styled/cut before getting to work. more

I was turned on to Rita by no less than 5 girls who work in my office who all seem to have the most beautiful and coolest hair you have ever seen. All of them have head-turning hair to die for and I needed to know who their stylist was. I was tired of my old boring hair style and needed a big change and fast. The girls all told me one by one – “You HAVE to see Rita over at Astor Place, we all go to her, she’s the absolute best!” Boy, were they right. Rita is incredible, an artist and a real professional, who has amazing technique at both cuts and color. I have been to Rita quite a few times now - she is expertly skilled as a colorist and uses this technique called “baliage” for color and highlights which gives you you this super-cool “waves of color” look that is just phenomenal! She also is very gentle on your hair and uses only top notch products. My hair looks healthier now than it’s ever been. Let me tell you, The girl knows her stuff! She mixes color perfectly to match your skin tone and has a real zen-like approach as a stylist. She is also a wizard with the scissors - when I need a quick cut or a trim, no biggie – she is fast and easy and the results are always pure perfection. I am so comfortable with her, I never have to worry. She knows exactly what I want and there is nothing she can’t do. She is totally personable and friendly with a great sense of humor which is a real plus. She is also a native New Yorker and is hip, sharp and is also wealth of knowledge when it comes to taking care of hair and skin to keep you looking and feeling great between appointments. Rita has a long list of celebrity clients from her days doing TV, but genuinely make us all feel like “stars”. I can’t say enough nice things about her. She is a true life saver – I just love her, all her clients do and we are very loyal! One quick tip that I have found works best when making an appointment with her. Call her directly on her cell phone (973) 886-9205 instead of going through the front desk. Astor Place is very big inside and has many stylists and barbers and can get chaotic. I was actually sent to the wrong person once when I first went there which could have been a real disaster. Accept no substitutes. I will not go to anyone but her, nor should you. Noemi was very friendly and was very interested in listening to my needs and what it was I was trying to accomplish with a slight change in my hair style. She eased my concerns and proceeded to do a very professional job; I loved the result! In summary, she is friendly, fun and competent! Thanks Noemi! more

I had a hair emergency and thought..I will just go across and the street and try them out. I was fortunate to land in Fran's chair. She did a quick color and trim and blew my hair out - And it looked GREAT! Next time...I went right back to her - and she did a triple process with highlights, full cut and blow dry. She is amazing!! I have to say that given a choice of any uptown exclusive super star or Fran....I choose Fran anytime! Oh, and she is FAST..so I don't waste a whole day either! more
