Astor Place Hairstylists

I went to this place for the 3rd time yesterday hoping for a different experience given what some of my friends have said. WHAT A MISTAKE! Some places just do not warrant second or especially, third chances. First of all, it looks like a construction job done all wrong with plastic coverings near the sink room. Second, the hairstylist lack serious professionalism. A group of spanish-speaking hairstylists aka the "High School Squad" apparently think its appropriate to talk about other stylists and their customers IN FRONT of the customers without regard as to whether the customer understands Spanish. Third, you can clearly see who are Management's favorites as these stylists get to do whatever they want without regard to the customers. Are there some limited talented hairstlists in there, yes I believe...Does this compensates for the clear lack of customer service and chaotic environment, HELL NO! And Rita, stop writing your own reviews! more

My siblings, cousins and I have been going to Steve for more than 15 years. I go every single weekend. When he is not there, we do not visit the place and I know that all if not most of the people that go to see him feel the same. Steve has the "magic touch" when it comes to making your hair truly BEAUTIFUL regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. When he is on vacation, it is truly painful to have to go elsewhere in the city as the results just do not compare even at the most expensive salons in NYC. He is a gift, a blessing and we would gladly follow him to the end of the earth to see him so heads up, Astor Place, take good care of this precious gem! I HIGHLY encourage everyone to go see him as do people from near and far...although I fear what disclosing this secret will mean in terms of his availability to see us:-) more

I am a California native and a natural dirty blonde and during my first few years in NY, I chose to forgo keeping up with my highlights because I doubted that any NY stylist would get the idea of making my hair look "sun-kissed" and not processed to death. That it, until a friend recommended RITA. She is my absolute fairy godmother! She totally LISTENS to what you want and if she makes suggestions, she EXPLAINS what the benefits are. She was patient with my long and super-thick hair (whereas past stylists I have gone to have gotten frustrated) and quick. My hair looks and feels fantastic. It was an AMAZING experience and I will definitely be going back. more

I went to Rita a year ago religiously and had AMAZING HAIR. Healthy, shiny, beautifully base- colored and highlighted. I went to someone else for a short period of time because she wasn't available when I was, and guess what- my hair was ruined by someone else!!! I recently came back to Rita and Astor, and AGAIN, she has repaired my hair- it's so beautiful and long, strong and shiny!!! My lesson, WAIT for her! I swear I will NEVER go to anyone else for color and cut EVER EVER EVER. She's that amazing! I know I am one of her many fans, and am on TV, so my look is SUPER IMPORTANT!!! Rita is so honest and sweet, and she gets how important it is to look and feel good. Beautiful inside and out, she's a true angel.She accomodates everyone she can, and I am appreciative of that now... I'm grateful to be her client, and can tell you that you'll be as ecstatic as I am. I literally get stopped on the street, in clubs, on the subway about my hair. She'll give you HONEST beauty advice about your skin, makeup and hair. She's a real specialist and actually cares. I'm really picky with my hair, and I was hesitant about going to Astor. I walked in and was directed to Jose, and he was fantastic. My hair looked great. I have been going back ever since. Despite what other people may post, Astor Place is a great spot to hang out in. Jose cut my hair during the World Cup, and it was hands down the best place I watched a game all summer. more

I was looking for an awesome new stylist /highlight person because my regular moved away. I bumped into 3 of my friends who had just gone to Rita at Astor Place Hair, and they looked amazing! They gave me her number-she books her own appointments-and I got in right before Christmas. You would not believe how many compliments I have gotten on my hair! That never happened before! My hilites are sparkly and healthy. She does this environmentally safe technique called baliage. I love it! Literally 4 more of my friends have already booked with her. She's a wonderful person, happy, with a sweet energy ans a great sense of humor...And get this- she actually listens to you when you request something! Again, a first in my life with my stylist. I know I'll go to Rita always, and feel I have also made a great friend in her. Also, the clients that were leaving her chair all hug her and are so happy- both men and women. I watched her create layers of color that were so beautiful and unique. Rita calls it "Halo's of Color", and it really is. I've never seen color like that before, but it's really beautiful and natural. She takes her time, and doesn't make you feel rushed. Now I know why she's more populer than anyone else on the sites. Rita, thank you and YOU ARE AN ANGEL! more

Its been about 20 years and all I have to say is if you want a haircut that will make you feel good then Alberto is the man for the job. I have been complaining of thinning hair since I started going there and his cutting technique has still kept me with a full head of hair. This guy is the man when it comes to haircuts. He knows style and gets it right all the time. Grazie! more

After going to Jose for over 15 years, I moved to New Jersey. I tried to find a stylist close to my new home - and she absolutely ruined my hair. Gave me a terrible haircut! I immediately went back to Jose and decided that he is 100% worth the trip! Jose is a master at hair - he is patient, knows what your hair needs and most importantly - he LISTENS. I told him I am back -- and this time, it's for good. I am happy to say that my whole family goes to Jose and we love love love him. Astor Place has a true gem in Jose. more

What a relief to finally find a stylist who listens to me AND can cut hair beautifully! Fran was accurate, quick and for me most importantly sensitive to my nervousness about getting a cut after my having a head injury. She was patient and kind as well as being lots of fun to talk to. Overall, I'm extremely pleased having got exactly what I wanted with no stress involved. She's a jewel and I hope she's at Astor Place for as long as I still have hair. more

For years I had used a salon on 57th Street but when my favorite stylist left and they raised their prices from $80 to $115 I needed to make a change. As a 50-year-old guy I was worried that I would be out of place at Astor Place Hair as I am not an art student or East Village rocker but I was instantly seen to and had the good fortune of being handed over to Mercedes. I'm used to wasting over an hour getting a haircut but in just 12 minutes Mercedes gave me the best cut I've had in years. And the price was $100 less than I had been paying. Fantastic! more

I discovered Jose several years ago through a family member. What I like about him and why I highly recomend him is not just his professionalism as a hair stylist but his kind manner. As a shy individual the first time I stepped into Astor Place I felt a little overwhelmed but Jose quickly put me at ease making me forget my nervousness. He gave me a great cut and still today I get compliments on my stylish hairstyle. He also did a wonderful job on my highlights. I highly recomend Jose at Astor Place for anyone looking for a great stylist and colorist. more

I admit, when I walked downstairs and pushed the doors, I was nervous, it was the 1st time I went to a barber/ old-fashioned salon like this. To my surprise, it was pretty big and were many people down there. The man at the front desk looked at my hair and brought me to Mecedes. She was a lovely, passionate stylist. Her attitude made me feel comfortable and happy. And she gave a fashionable and sharp haircut! Many friends asked me where I got haircut! I was very satisfied with the result and the cheap price. I will definitely come back!! more

I'm a college girl who wanted to find a cheap place just to get a trim. I tried Astor place and I probably will go there again soon. They are very fast because there are so many different stylists there and they give you a good haircut for a cheap price. I definitely would recommend it! :) more

Moving to the city 3 years ago, I went to many salons looking for someone who was amazing with highlights, but for a good price. I did some research on CitySearch and made an appointment at Astor Place with Rita. Rita is the absolute best of both worlds. A complete professional, amazing stylist, and all around a great, sweet and considerate person. Comparative to NYC hair salon prices, her services are a steal. I work in media and have referred many colleagues and friends to her (men and women -- non-blondes) and all are very happy returning clients. I HIGHLY recommend booking an appointment with Rita if you are in the market for a new stylist. She really is the best. more

one word WONDERFULL! regina saved my hair. i went to get my hair done for my bothers party and went to astor place. i went to regina. she knew what she was doing didnt ask dumb questions and did her work. my hair came out looking amazing and cost was cheap. Let me preface my review by saying that I love a nice spa experience from the tea or expresso that you're offered as you enter to the long head massage as you get your hair washed, but when it comes down to it I am paying for highlights. In the past I've been willing to spend up to $300 for highlights, which includes no haircut and no blowdry, and after several tries at well known salons I had practically given up. The best is when you've just swiped your card and you can barely notice a difference or your hair looks orange, not blonde. It was almost two years ago that I found Rita through reviews on the internet. I actually couldn't believe I was calling the Astor Place Hair Design Studio as I had always known it as a guys barber shop. Rita came to the phone, I scheduled my first appointment, and from then on I was addicted. I get compliments everywhere I go for how gorgeous my highlights are, how natural they look, and did I forget to mention that sometimes I can wait 7 weeks between visits because her highlights are done so close to the root. Sometimes I stop by for a cut and a glaze, which she often encourages because she cares more about the health of my hair and making me happy, and in turn keeping me as a long term client. Rita is super affordable, and when I say affordable, she still has to make a living and afford to live in New York. The cost of her services is relative to every other salon in NYC where highlights are typically 250 and up before a cut or a blowdry. A haircut is typically $100 or more anywhere else. If you're expecting prices that you would find in Atlanta or in a small town in upstate New York, you're not being realistic. I can't tell you how grateful I am to have Rita in my life. I wouldn't know what to do without her!!!!!!! more

I've been to Astor Hair many times with good and bad results, because I never remembered the name of the person who did my hair last, and just took whoever was available just to get a cheap haircut. But I put 5 stars here because that's how many Narcy deserves. A few months ago I came into Astor Hair with a picture of what I wanted (a Victoria Beckham style bob) and was guided toward Narcy. Before that I'd been growing out a pretty awful haircut from another Astor Hair employee. When this haircut went well, I made sure to grab Narcy's card so I could request her next time! I usually have a pretty good idea of what I want when I go in to get my hair cut, but I'm not great at communicating it. Narcy was extremely patient. She had good judgment, checked with me often, and tweaked it until it was exactly right. I got numerous compliments on my haircut from total strangers, including another hairstylist with whom I shared a random elevator ride. Not bad for $30. I went back to Narcy the other day for a similar cut. The first one wasn't a fluke. For great looking short hairstyles, request Narcy! more
