I stopped going 12/11/2008

I have no dental insurance and was told I could get cheap care there. Big mistake. I wolud rather pay more to go to a real dentist next time. The student that worked on me even had trouble with the cleaning--actually accidentally cut my mouth! I was told I need a root canal, so I decided to go to a private dentist. Even the receptionists there seem overworked and pissed all the time. If I want to get bad dental work and get attitude, I might as well just ask my teenage daughter to fix my teeth! more

For very basic work only 12/8/2008

Only go here if you are doing very routine cleaning or fillings. Students do all the work, and the supervisor for my student doctor was a jerk who was constantly in a bad mood. They will refuse to redo any shoddy work, so you may end up paying more to another dentist to fix up whatever NYU screws up. more

I guess I expected too much... 12/4/2008

The NYU students are a bit full of themselves doing "a favor" to patients who are treated like welfare recipients. In other words, you better be happy with whatever they decide to do with you. If you are unhappy with your service, the school will side with the student because the student is paying the school more than you are as a patient. That is something to think about. more

Had problems with bill from them 9/19/2005

I went there for quite a while. It is not as cheap as you would think. I didn't have insurance so I had to pay for it myself. The appointments are many weeks apart so it could take six months or more depending on what you have done to complete your work in your mouth. When I left they made sure I was paid in full. The next thing I know I got a bill at home saying I owed them money that I had already paid. They are very crowded and not very organized and I do not recommend them. The money you save is not worth it. more

it's okay 9/1/2005

The service I received was a while ago, the facility was okay but not too private. It was okay nothing special. Though I got a bill from them saying I had to pay when in the agreement there was something else about it. The equipment is all there to do whatever is required, but I did not have a great experience. more

Affordable Dental clinic with NYU dental students 8/12/2005

The students are earnest and really eager to learn dentistry. Prices are moderate and quite reasonable. However, it takes a really long time for them to complete the dental work in your mouth - two hours in the dental chair is common. The students have a "real" dentist check their plan and then their work every time. Students can be tentative with probes, drills, giving novacaine, etc. I was told more times than I can count that the topical was not necessary because it only gave psychological relief - who is teaching this dumb philosophy? It would be best if the real dentist who oversees the work was the same one each visit but unfortunately this is not the case. Once, I had a dentist who was very rough and completely unprofessional, causing me more pain than necessary. They also do specialty work - crowns, extractions, etc. but have limited lab time so you might have to wait a long time for the crown to be ready. You pay for what you get and you get what you pay for. If you don't mind letting students practice on you and have a lot of patience, you might want to give this clinic a try. more

excellent place to learn dentistry 8/4/2005

NYU, located in the heart of Manhattan, is an excellent place to learn dentistry. With a top notch faculty, the dentistry school is well known among medical circles. The only downside to attending NYU College of Dentistry is that it is very very expensive. But hopefully it will be worth it for the students in the future. more

Cheap Dental Care, But They ARE Students :) 7/21/2005

NYU College of Dentistry is a great deal for dental care, but you have to remember that the dentists are students and are still learning - the whole process takes some patience. One of the huge perks is the special dental packages for college students and their partners and dependents (even non-NYU college students). For $195 a year you get cleanings, x-rays, fillings and 10-15% discounts on. I'm not sure what the discounts are for non-students, but from what heard it's a good deal. The first downside is that a simple cleaning takes 3 different appointments - 1 for x-rays, 1 for an analysis and treatment plan, and 1 for the cleaning (then more for additional work). The second downside is that the dentists are students and don't always know what they're doing! One student who looked at me was so nervous he took my pulse with his thumb (you have your own pulse there, you have to use first two fingers), and the one who did my cleaning ended up dribbling water down my face the entire time and lacked any sort of "chair-side" manner. That being said, I got my teeth cleaned and didn't have to sublet my apartment to pay for it. The students do the initial work, but a supervisor checks everything to make sure it's done right. Someone else I know got some fairly extensive work done and didn't have a problem. If you absolutely hate the dentist and need soft music and coddling, ante up and go to a real professional. If you just need a cleaning and a reminder to floss, save a few bucks and come here. I recommend keeping an upbeat attitude and respectfully letting your dentist know you understand that they're still practicing. more
