Commerce Bank moved into NYC with many free services. You can open a no fee checking account (no minimum balance first yr, then keep $100 minimum balance). Super convenient - it is open every day and has evening hours (until 8 PM M-F!). If you are 50 or over, you also get free checks, free notary, free money orders and a free safe deposit box if one is available. They also have a no-fee machine that counts your change and gives you a slip to cash in at the teller. You even get back the ATM fees charged when taking money out of non-Commerce Bank if you keep $2500 in your checking account. They give out free red "C" shaped banks and there is always free candy - usually red lollipops. Courteous staff.

Jet Blue is the best airline - usually on time, cheap fares, friendly crew, well serviced planes with Direct TV sets in front of each passenger. They still serve snacks including Terra Blue Chips (made from natural blue potatoes!) and soda/water/juice for free on every flight. You can join True Blue Rewards to try to get a free flight - you need 100 points and they expire after a year. Flights to Buffalo from JFK are only 2 points each, to California 6 points (double points if you book online). Most flights are out of JFK. I think from LGA (LaGuardia) they only go to Florida. Besides booking online and choosing your seat, you can also get your boarding passes online 24 hours prior to flying or checkin through an airport kiosk that scans a barcode you have printed at home. What more could you ask??

I came across Dr. Lu's name in an article in the Coping section of the NY Times about a woman who became pregnant after seeing him for acupuncture treatments. She had previously had 'traditional' fertility treatments with no success. Somewhat wary of 'alternative medicine practitioners, I was impressed that Dr. Lu is also a licensed MD. Cordial business like staff. Basic rooms. Acupuncture needles placed skillfully and painlessly(!) and left in for 20 minutes (timed precisely) while you peacefully rest on the examining table. I sent a friend there for treatment of eczema who had several acupuncture sessions and took the alternative medicine and tea Dr. Lu prescribed and sold (some conflict of interest there) but it seems to have worked!
Drawbacks - Treatment can become expensive ($40/session) if not covered by insurance. Flyers in office advertising herbals/steroids - who knows if these are safe? Avoid the steroids no matter what the claims!

The Bronx Zoo has hundreds of animals to see from bats to snakes to gorillas and tigers and more many in a 'natural' environment. Everything tends to be wide apart so be prepared to walk alot and definitely bring the stroller (though you will have to park it outside some of the exhibits so don't leave anything valuable behind!) The Children's zoo is great and has many interactive exhibits like walking in and out of a rope spider web and a petting zoo with a warthog. Do NOT go on family days when admission is free if you don't like lots of crowds. Do bring snacks/food and drinks along as prices in the zoo are expensive. Some of the rides like the tram can get costly when added to admission price but it is a nice break from walking around - get a combo ticket if you think you will do all the exhibits.

On a hot summer night, it's fun to stroll along the boardwalk and see the many rides with their colored lights and hear the hawkers and play games a chance ( you could win a giant stuffed Nemo for a quarter a try). Take a thrilling roller coaster in the dark over the ocean or into a fast 360 loop forward and backwards. Plenty of food and Tshirts to buy and you can take the trolley if you get tired. Great way to spend a few hours with the family. Separate fees for waterpark.

Great place to take children. $6 adult , $1 children price gets you into two zoos. The larger one has the seals in the center - when you enter, check out the feeding times for seals, polar bears & penguins. Also there are usually a few short kid friendly presentations about wildlife. My son was once chosen to be colorfully dressed as the best parts for each animal. Bring snacks and drinks - there is food service inside but it tends to be expensive - plenty of places to sit and eat and take a break - esp. around the seals. Humid and misty in the tropical forest exhibit but monkeys, snakes and bats are great to watch (notice the rats scurrying around the floor of the bat exhibit!). Penguin/puffin house is nice and cool on a hot summer day. You can sit here for a while and take a breather. Smaller Children's zoo has petting zoo.

Arms and armor as well as the Egyptian wing are good for children. There are also several different free booklets for kids where they can search through the exhibits - ask at the information counter.
A little stuffy - there is a giant sarcophagus and you get scolded if you touch it. Besides paintings, there is the popular costume exhibit, religous icons, eastern arts and the American wing. Nice garden. Steps outside are a great place to people watch and see the mime. Suggested admission is $12!!! but you can get in for $1 and save your money for souvenirs in the gift shop. There is also a separate children's gift shop which has some neat stuff for kids.

Don't be put off by the neighborhood or the nondescript storefront - Ring the buzzer next to the bar and enter the factory bakery store. Lighter than Junior's but still creamy and delicious, this cheesecake is fabulous. Made with all natural ingredients. Kosher too. For an extra dollar, they will slice the entire cake and place wax paper in between each slice. Extremely reasonably priced. A treat all will enjoy.
