Worst

We were 17 people dining that night. Not even one was satisfied. The service was Ok, but the manager/owner was very rude and nasty, who made my 4 year old daughter step out in bit...

Roach found in Sambar !!! Disgusting! 5/16/2012

Absolutely revolting experience. I found a roach leg in my sambar in a delivery. I immediately called the restaurant to complain and they hung up on me. I have reported the restaurant to the NY Department of Health. Avoid this place at all costs. If I found a roach leg in my sambar, there's no telling what else you might find! Sesh more

Bad Business 1/14/2012

The food was not bad. But the management argued over of their own groupon promotion. He was unwilling to honor the customer even with the promotion shown in published writing. more

Extremely bad experience for Students. 10/10/2011

Extremely bad experience at Madral Mahal. They worked w/ Groupon to advertise a deal, that we purchased and got us into the restaurant but didn't honor it when we were done w/ our meals. My roommate and I first found out of about the place through the website called Groupon/Now where they had a deal that said spend $8 and get $15 dollars worth of food. We both purchased a deal each and decided to pay for our own meals. We had used Groupon several times at several restaurants before and expected to be treated with the same kind of customer service and respect as the other places that honored Groupon purchases. And we expected nothing less because businesses that work with Groupon are usually trying to boost their business or keep their businesses with these deals. Anyway, we went in and decided to have a buffet which was $10.95. We figured if we got a Coke or dessert that would cover the $15 dollars we had in our Groupon account. Once we finished w/ the buffet, I asked the waiter to give me a regular menu (Non Buffet) so that I can purchase an item separately from the menu. ( such as a dessert or a drink to go) and informed him that I would be using my Groupon deal that day. 1. He immediately told me that groupon does not apply to items to be taken out of the restaurant. ( I understand a buffet menu item that cannot be taken out of the restaurant, but when I was willing to pay full price for a non buffet/ regular menu item, I didnt understand the logic. Plus, Groupon did not specify any such thing) 2. He drops a bomb on us and tells us that only one groupon offer can be used per table. ( Again, Groupon never mentioned this restriction on the offer. The restriction is usually mentioned by Groupon if the restaurant tells them to place that restriction. The restaurant had not mentioned this restriction on the groupon Offer. Plus if it said that on the offer, we wouldnt have purchased a separate deal each between the two of us. Or maybe we would have sat on two different tables) Finally he told us to speak to the manager at the front desk, which we did. This manager by the name, Nina was extremely rude and patronizing. Her response was ''i dont know about all this Groupon stuff, but only one can be applied to the table and the rest has to be paid by creditcard/cash'' Ofcourse she didnt listen or look at the groupon receipt we had and nor pay attention when we tried to show her that the only restriction was the one that said - one offer per person, not one offer per table. Then she goes on to say '' No other customers tried to argue with us on this matter. When I told them about 'one per table' policy, I just advised them to call Groupon to get their money back''. Why would her advice of getting their money back even come up if these customers were not trying to use their individual Groupon offers for each table. Made no logical sense. And finally she told us that we should have checked with the restaurant before using Groupon. This suggestion completely devalues the company of Groupon because thousands of customers trust Groupon in the way that once they spend money with Groupon, they do not have to doubt a business for not honoring it. And Groupon never gave us any trouble w/ that in that past one year that we have been using it regularly. I hope a restaurant like Madras Mahal is not chosen by companies like Groupon because a restaurant and management such as the one makes the customer feel cheap, makes the customer feel as though they are doing them some big favor w/ that deal, in spite of the customer spending money, and makes the customer regret spending any money at all at a place that patronizes their customer. Final Bill - Two buffets - $10.95 each - 21.90 One can of Coke - $1.95 Total with Tax - $28 and change Only one groupon applied - ( - $15) Credit card paid - $13 and change more

Kosher & Interesting 12/22/2010

\r Madras Mahal is a kosher vegetarian restaurant, that not forgotten that the main purpose of restaurant is to serve good interesting food.\r \r Most of the items offered at Madras are standard fare for New York Indian restaurants; although all are kosher and non meat (some are dairy), but there are much larger selection of vegetarian dishes. While the food is good, there is one item that stands out the Dosai. These are very large (over 24”) fried thin double layered pastries, rolled and filled with a large variety of ingredients and served with various dips. Tearing apart and eating a Dosai with more than one person is definitely a way to break the ice.\r \r The wait staff is friendly, but clueless, so you have to remind them of what you ordered. \r \r The food is inexpensive a full dinner for two is $ 40.\r \r For more see www.ditmasestates\r \r \r \r more

The Best Indian Restaurant in NYC 2/7/2010

I'm a long time client of Madras Mahal. I have been going there for the last 20 years. And Indian restaurants in NYC come and go, but Madras Mahal has stayed....well there is a reason for that, they are #1 in their South Indian dishes. AUTHENTIC WITH THEIR PERSONAL TOUCHES! You tell them how to make it, and it's done! I truly think it's a great experience for anybody that loves Indian Food. Thank you Madras Mahal for all years of Dosa Service to NYC! Pros: Best Dosas in America! Cons: They only have 1 restaurant... :( more

FANTASTIC VEGETARIAN FOOD!!! 2/7/2010

I'm a Vegetarian, and it's extremely difficult to find an authentic Indian vegetarian restaurant. Majority of restaurants have bland taste with little or NO spice, even though I tell them to make it spicy. Madras Mahal was amazing. The food was FRESH, TASTY, and everything was made ON TIME! Friendly service and the knowledgable. I went there to try South Indian cuisines, and it was excellent! The second time I went, I tried North - Gujarati foods, and it was also amazing. I later realized that they have a few Chefs in the back...one specifically for South Indian food, and another for North Indian...hence the food being so perfect. I truly recommend this place for anybody that wants TASTY FOOD!!!! Pros: Located in the Heart of Little India Cons: Can't think of any. more

Madras Mahal Best of NYC! 2/4/2010

I have been regular to Madras Mahal since 13 years, I have been their on many personnel and business occasions. Recently, I had my daughter's fifth bday celebrated in Madras with party of 40 people and staff was extremely professional and helpful from the start till the end. It was already pre-fix menu set up by a catering manager such an gentleman name Natan and he worked out a great price menu which fit our budget also. I have never enjoyed any place or felt so much at home as I feel when I am at Madras Mahal. It surely makes me feel right at home serving fresh & healthy food which make me their customer for long time. I wish the owner and entire team of Madras Mahal a very best of luck and thank you for serving unique food . Pros: Badam Halwa, Channa Masala, Palk Paneer all the punjbi dishe more

Ok may be too much dramatic!! But seriously all you can eat ""Best Indian Vegetarian Buffet in NYC"" I am an international student and always hopping one place to another looking for one nice place which I can be permanent at. Madras Mahal is my first one on my permanent list now. It serves best & healthy food, nice servers and get value. I highly endorse this place with a great joy you will def go back happy :). Pros: Dosa, Mango Lassi, Samosa, Lady in front Cons: Wish there was Madras Mahal in Spain more

Once was good, that's history now. Not going there anymore!. 11/5/2009

My boy friend and I was looking forward to eat at the Madras Mahal on 10/31/09. We were there around 12.45PM. There was no label for each items on the buffet and when we ask the cashier, he doesn't know the name of some of the food. He went inside the kitchen to find out and didn't come out with the info. He was on the phone all that time. The food was cold, I asked one of the staff to heat up my food in the microwave, he said yes and went inside the kitchen but didn't return. Left me standing and waiting for 2minutes. Then I asked who I believe is a chef came out to check on buffet. He was rude and totally refuse to heat my food in the plate, instead of accomadating and apologizing. Palak Paneer tasted sour, never had palak paneer so bad like they served. It taste like they made it with old milk. I did not enjoy my lunch that time. I guess they don't care about customer service since they keep getting the business. Once was very good, it is now ancient history. Not going there anymore. more

Indignant Staff, Feces in bathroom 10/30/2009

Came here once before for a party and liked the food a lot so I brought my husband back with a coupon from Restaurant(dot)com. We presented the coupon before ordering and the waiter said he would take it at the end, once we had ordered the minimum $40 worth of food. The service was slow, but we didn't care because the food was good. However, when we handed over the coupon at the end of the meal, the server argued that our non-alcoholic drinks didn't count towards the minimum. This restriction was not indicated on the coupon and he knew when we ordered we were trying to reach the minimum, so he should have told us the drinks didn?t apply then. We asked for a manager; another waiter came over, said the same thing and said the owner wouldn't apply the coupon. We argued some more, stood our ground, and they finally brought the bill with the applied discount, without apology. We paid cash to avoid sitting their longer, but not before I visited the bathroom...to find FECES on the floor! It was disgusting, will never go back. Pros: Food does taste good Cons: Slow Service, Rude Staff, Unsanitary Bathroom more

Excellent food 10/10/2009

I have been eating here regularly for the last few months and the food has been consistently excellent. The uthappam are particularly good. This is one of only a couple of restaurants in the area that denotes which items have dairy and which don't (and also spicy vs. non-spicy), which is very convenient for vegans. Pros: delicious, freshly-prepared; indicates dairy-free for vegans Cons: occasionally service can be a little slow, but overall fine more

Horrible Place - Strongly avoid 7/6/2009

Went to this place on July 4th with family after the fireworks and had the worst experience ever. The waiters were extremely rude. One person dropped the menu and the next waiter came right after to ask us if we were ready. The waiters kept strolling up an down the restaurants acting busy, while a another person with a hat kept bringing peoples food from the kitchen. We could never quite figure out who was our server was since three waiters came to clear the table as we were in the middle of our dinner. We actually had to raise our voices when it was clear to the waiters that we wer actually working on our food.\r \r The place looked quite unhygenic as well. The child seat belt was broken, the bathroom floor was all wet (had to actually tip-toe around).\r \r When the bill finally arrived we figured why the service was so bad. The gratuity is included for parties or 4 and above. The fat lady at the counter hardly cared about your experience or your complaints. As we were complaining about our experience, she hardly lifted her head above from counting some one else's bill.\r \r Am extremely surprised that this place is still in business, especially with some other excellent restaurants around. Would never visit this place again.\r Pros: Food - half way decent Cons: Overall extremely bad dining experience more

Great Indian Food... 10/24/2008

Ended up in Madras Mahal last weekend as it came highly recommended by one of my close friends with my husband and my mother in law. Place was packed so it was a good sign. We were greeted graciously and seated promptly. We knew what we were going to order so wasted no time and so for appetizers we ordered Iddly in rasam bowl, Samosa (of course), Mix appertizer platter, for drink Taj Mahal beer & 2 mango Lassis, and for main course we had Palak paneer, Channa masala with wheat breads and my husband ordered Gujurt Thali. Food was amazing, each and every item that was ordered was over. Of course Palak Paneer was winner and thier mango lassi is out of the world since I am a fan of lassi I like it thick and not too sweet and it was just right. Over all experience in madras mahal was satisfying and pleasing, decor is nice, simple and clean, service is great also. Thanks Madras Mahal for the great evening. Pros: Mango Lassi,Palak Paner, Guju Thali, Channa Masala, Samosa, Mix Appt Cons: Wish they had one in Brooklyn more
