People rave about this place, but the food was only decent and the ambience was horrible. On a blistering New York City evening (over 90 degrees even after sunset) they had the doors closed and the fans off, resulting in a sauna environment that hardly encouraged healthy appetites. The lemonade was warm, the seitan enchilada slimy. The staff was flaky and inattentive. Overall, I'd recommend it only if you're a strict vegan and haven't scouted out other decent places in the city.

I've had carnivorous friends fess up that if there was one all-veg place where they could get a satisfactorily "meaty" meal it would be Kate's.
Meals are heavy, greasy, American diner fare with lots of BBQ-type options and convincing meat substitutes. Over all not the kind of veg cuisine I'm a fan of, but if you're looking for a heap of chili-fries and and stack of BBQ mock ribs, maybe Kate's is just the grungy East Village spot you've been looking to skirt the edge of heartburn at.
In terms of American greasy spoon veg I might choose Anytime (Williamsburg, Brooklyn) or Old Devil Moon (East Village) over Kate's.
