In our humble defense 2/16/2012

When Laytners sells a sleeping pillow our staff informs the customer at time of purchase that there are no refunds on sleeping pillows. We will not take back a pillow that someone may have slept on - it is unhygienic and by law we cannot resale said pillow. We post this policy at the register, on the receipt and tell the customer. When a customer comes back with a sleeping pillow after owning it for a few days and simply leaves it on the counter, walks out and says refund me - we are left with a problem. The customer did not leave any info just a receipt without name or phone number and walked out annoyed about our policy. We held the pillow for 5 days in a sealed plastic bag without hearing a word from customer - we then discarded the pillow. When the customer did finally contact us we offered a store credit ( for a product we admitly threw out and would never resell) but he slamed down the phone and insisted on a refund. The store manager said the customer came back in the store got very loud and threw over a display. When we called him back to once again offer a store credit the customer denied his behavior but ended the conversation when we offered to share the video our surveillance camera caught. At this point not sure what any merchant with over 50 years of selling NewYorkers can do when people behave badly. Does anyone need this needless aggravation or being defamed on the Internet - really for $48.95? Alan L more

Awful store 9/13/2011

On Aug. 1, 2011, I purchased a latex pillow from them at their E. 86th st. store for $48.95. The next day I tried to return it and they told me store policy is not to take returns on personal items but I should leave the pillow and my receipt with them and they will ask the manager when he comes back from vacation. I stopped by the store 1 week later on Aug. 8th and they told me they threw the pillow and my receipt out and would not give me store credit or another pillow. That day I called Alan Laytner, owner of this store, and he told me he didn't see why they wouldn't issue me store credit., but he would have to speak with the store manager. I called Alan a couple days later and he told me they did in fact throw my pillow and receipt out and even though I can prove the charge through my credit card company, he would have to waive his own policy on me having pillow and receipt in hand and I should call back. I left messages twice for him and stopped by the store 2 times and yesterday, Sept. 12th they told me they would not give me store credit or another pillow. In essence, I paid for an item, they threw it out, admitted they threw it out and would not make good on it. I WOULD STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM ANY OF THEIR STORES. THEY ARE THIEVES AND CANNOT BE TRUSTED. I have also filed a complaint with the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs. more

Terrible follow-through on furniture purchases! Buyer beware 11/3/2010

The sales staff is not at all knowledgeable about the details of delivery and assembly of furniture. I recently bought a table at Laytners, having been promised a scheduled delivery and assembly for an additional $95 fee. The item in question was not delivered by appointment, but simply left outside my door. The manager at the store initially denied that anything had been improperly handled, then offered an assembly date two weeks later, finally offering to send a handyman to perform the agreed-upon assembly. The handyman, however, did not keep the appointment, so I am still waiting for this work to be completed. Buyer beware. Or better yet, buyer, take your business to a store that delivers what it promises. more
