Best

The food at Kittichai was sublime. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. My wife had the vegetable stir fry and I had the pork tenderloin. We both ordered the Jasmine rice and ...

Worst

I have enjoyed dinner and drinks here before, but on a recent Friday night I was very disappointed in the attitude at the door. The front door bouncer was holding a people back, ...

Excellent Food and Atmosphere 7/18/2006

I just ate here for lunch during restaurant week and had a fantastic experience. Wait staff is great - very professional and attentive. We sat outside and someone was constantly walking out to take a look and make sure we were ok, water glasses full, etc. I tried a shrimp salad appetizer that was a great blend of flavor and textures. Followed it with some sea bass that was just the perfect portion - not too big or small - with a delicious spiced sauce and rice. Surprisingly, dessert was NOT as good as the other courses would have led one to believe. Of course, we had a limited choice, but definitely was a little disappointing. The bavarois (it was sort of like flan) was interesting, but the other dessert, I don't recall the name, was meringue with some sort of thick cream flavored with cherries, sort of bland. We took our coffees inside because it got too hot for us, and they had not problem moving us. The bar looks like a great place to have an after-work drink. more

One of the best in NYC! 9/28/2005

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC, Kittichai is just amazing. From the cool water pond in the middle of the restaurant and floating candles to the great service, this place has the best Thai you can find in a beautiful location. The chicken kefir soup was rated best appetizer in New York magazine, and it certainly is! Everything is delicious, definitely book your reservation now! more

Fancy Bangkok in Soho 4/4/2005

Just tried out the (somewhat) new Thai restaurant in Soho. The meal here reminded me of going to fancy restaurants in Bangkok. For authentic family-style food, I prefer Sripaphai in Queens, but I was looking for something different, but not so adulterated like Vong. We loved the dining room (dark wood, with floating candles in a meditation pool), the service was friendly and the food was inventive. Some of the dishes were standards (crispy whole fish with chili sauce), others were unique interpretation of standards (Kittichai fish cakes), whereas some were revelations (fried stuffed shitake mushrooms). Would definitely go again. I took a quick look at some reviews from nymetro.com which were quite mixed. It seems that they have had a lot of problems with their service in the past (presumably a somewhat rocky start from October?) Anyway got reservations quite easily both over the phone and at opentable.com, and found the whole experience quite nice. more

If you think great Thai food means orchids, sunken pool, attitude, expensive dishes and rude service, then this is the place for you. If you prefer authentic Thai food as well as authentic Thai hospitality, then go with other more impressive choices in Manhattan and Queens. Considering that one of the world's best Italian restaurants outside Italy can be found in Bangkok, we wonder why 60 Thompson could not do better.

Editorial
  • Sleek, hip and exotic, Kittichai feels like a Thai resort in miniature, with candles floating around the pool that's the centerpiece of the dining room. The guests, like those of the Thompson Hotel...
