Francie is constantly striving to understand how to reconcile between her poverty and unrelenting desire to succeed in a society that values the elite class. Betty Smith's debut novel is basically stunning in its simplicity, and it is clear that the autobiographical nature and child's perspective is what makes this an unadulterated view of humanity, poignant in the sharpness of its insight.

Dan Brown keeps you in suspense with every page, and the plot is intellectual and educational. You not only read an awesome page-turner, but you come out smarter as well. Best tip: Read Angels & Demons first. A&D is the prequel to Da Vinci Code, and happens to be better, in my humble opinion.

Middlesex is one of those eerie stories that entices you to continue reading by describing socially-unacceptable behaviors. It is a story of incest, sexuality, and human desires. For some it may prove disturbing, but Eugenides' writing is lush and beautiful. This novel is worth a read! I read it for my book club and we had a wonderful discussion regarding the main character's quest for a gender identity, and all of the members seemed genuinely happy to have read it.
