Great Food if you like eating in an auditorium 4/3/2011

Upon entering this establishment, I knew right away the atmostphere wasn't my style. I don't like large dining hall type places with a lot of noise. I like dining to be more of an intimate experience. The food was delicious, the lobster pancakes, duck fried rice and black bean cod. However, the prices were astronomical! The appie was $36.00 and most entrees were in the forties. Twenty bucks for a dessert? I don't care if they feed 4 people, it was only me. I think I should have stayed at Bond 45 for my meal instead of only the drinks! more

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE 7/24/2010

If you like Asian food you can do so much better in all the wonderful authentic Chinese restaurants around the city, and you won't have to spend so much money. While the space is nice and attracts a crowd, this place is overpriced and the food and service are sloppy. Our dessert especially was a joke, it looked like a mess of a cake you could buy at any diner. I've been to Asia de Cuba and really liked it, as China Grill is in the same restaurant group I expected better. Again, save your money and go elsewhere, not worth it!! Pros: outdoor seating, midtown location, good drinks, big space Cons: bad expensive food, poor service, poor presentation more

Awesome food, Awesome service, and just good fun!!! 11/3/2008

I rarely venture to midtown in hopes to find truly excellent meal, especially directly by Time Square, however China Grill has proven that they can provide great food and great service even in a touristy area. A few friends and I went to China Grill for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. This was our first time there, but it was recommended by a friend for large groups so we thought we'd try it out. Upon arriving, we were seated immediately with our table (9 people) already set. Right away we were greeted by our waiter with a big smile. We all ordered some cocktails off their list (pear margarita is EXCELLENT!!). After looking at the menu we all placed our orders. The food is meant to share so it just kinda came out as it was ready. That was different but a very cool idea. We passed all the plates around a ate like a big family. It was great. The restaurant was busy but you would have never noticed with the service that we got. We never had to wait long for anything and then when we ordered dessert, it came out with a big ""Happy Birthday"" written on the plate and a candle. It was adorable!!!! We all had a blast and my boyfriend absolutely loved his birthday dinner. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone, hands down one of the more impressive and memorable restaurant experiences I have had in a while. Thanks you China Grill!!!!! Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Convienent Location Cons: Nothing more

Won't go back 10/20/2008

Service was like they were trying to turn tables every 30 minutes. Starters came out before we had even had a sip of our cocktails and my wife's lobster (cooked to a mush) came to the table 10 minutes after my duck (way overdone). Took a few bites and left as soon as we could. This was our first and definitely LAST visit. more

Fantastic Service! 8/15/2008

Last night we held a company dinner here- it was fabulous, everyone had a wonderful time! The dinner coordinator, Ela, was completely on the ball with everything in regards to planning the dinner - she had great follow up and organization. The food was delicious, the portions very generous. The servers were incredibly attentive - the dinner ran exceptionally smooth with no hiccups. more

Great food, poor service 1/31/2008

I read the recent reviews of China Grill and I think the problem is that people do not know in advance what to expect. All main courses at China Grill, whether on the regular or restaurant week menu, are large portions meant for sharing. Thus, they are priced accordingly. A main dish can set you anywhere between $30 and $60, but when you consider that you receive enough food for two, this is not bad at all. My friends and I went to China Grill last night for the restaurant week. Unlike the previous reviewer, we found it to be a very good deal. For the two appetizers we choose, one main course, and two desserts, we would have paid $94 on a regular night. The restaurant week brought it down to $70. Unlike many other places, which during the restaurant week serve dishes normally not found on the regular menu, China Grill servers some of their most popular everyday items, including the sashimi tempura, calamari salad, spicy dumplings, and skirt steak. We actually ordered all of the above and found them well prepared and delicious. Apart from the food, which all people in our party immensely enjoyed, the service was below average. A couple of drinks we ordered never came and generally, it took much longer than usual for the food to arrive. The check had an item that we did not order or consume, but that was easily fixed. All in all, I recommend this place and look forward to my next visit.\r \r I went to China Grill last night with a group of friends. We decided to order from the restaurant week menu, Pros: food Cons: service more

Good food, but did not get the point of restaurant week 1/30/2008

The idea of sharing plates seems not too uncommon at China Grill, so I would be OK with the idea. Also, the food was pretty good, we were not leaving hungry despite sharing a main course and dessert between two. However, ordering from the regular menu (assuming a same-sized main course) would probably have cost about the same - so the idea of restaurant week, being able to try fancy places at a reasonable price, does not really work here. Shame. Otherwise, place is rather noisy, staff was between friendly, courteous and entertaining (all in a positive sense). All in all, a good experience, but not quite worth the price tag. Pros: Good food, friendly staff Cons: Dear China Grill, rethink your restaurant week approach. Value is not great. more

DISAPPOINTING FOOD PORTIONS 1/29/2008

I went here during restuarant week for lunch when you are suppose to get an appetizer, entree and desert for the price of $24.07. The restuarant was crowded and very full and decorative, once we were seated we were told that the we choose 2 appetizers, 1 entree , 1 desert and pay 24.07 each. So where other restuarants give you your own entree and desert china grill expected you to share your entire meal. This is trully not sticking with the idea of restaurant week, so why participate at all? The spicy beef dumpling was delisicious, and the entree was a skirt steak and lo mein. The entree was shared between two people and was suppose to be sharing portions, but they definately were not. The entree was a one person serving. When desert was presented it was once again a slice of cake that you were suppose to share. I must say that the entire meal was delicous, but five mintues after leaving the restuarant I was still hungary....sharing an entree is not ideal. The atmosphere was great, but I left feeling like I got scammed for restuarant week. I would not go back Pros: upbeat, nice decor Cons: small portions more

Good Asian Fusion, Lots of Noise... 12/2/2007

This place in midtown is popular with the business crowd and it can get pretty loud in the evenings. The restaurant is spacious and lighting is dim, and food is what one would call ""Asian fusion""--Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and French influences abound. Try the skirt steak with lo mein, and their wasabi mashed potatoes have a very nice zing... Go with a group, cuz it's family style. Pros: Food, crowd, ambience Cons: Noise level, service is unpredictable more

great food and atmosphere 10/19/2007

I went there for my birthday. Since it was an early dinner, we didn't have to wait. The portion of food and the taste were great. My boyfriend is very picky, but he really liked this place. I'm not a fan of drinking, but the mango martini was great. Pros: food and atmosphere more

Best Restaurant Week Pick! 8/30/2007

Dined at the China Grill during Restaurant Week, just so happened it was also the night of the Lexington Ave steampipe explosion. Despite the significant delay in our arrival, we were seated immediately (it was pretty crowded) and greeted by what would turn out to be, one of the friendliest, most attentive waitress'. Considering our order was off of the pre fixe menu, the food portions were extremely generous, down to the superb dessert. We were so full after, we could not believe we were actually getting a discount! We did order quite a few drinks, as they were just so tasty. We probably remained at our table ordering drinks for about an hour after our meal had been completed, and at no point did we feel pressured to leave. It was a great dining experience. Pros: Portions, Cocktails, Staff more

great food and a delicious cheese dessert 8/6/2007

I came here during restaurant week with my newly married wife. Booked at opentable and when presented with a menu option different from what advertised i brought to the attention of the manager that i signed for a different deal. After having listened to me he very kindly and professionally agreed. This was the opening to the best meal we had in two weeks of food tasting. We tried them all, Daniel, One if by Sea two if by land, and countless others in a two weeks nYC food experience. quite simply delicious food, and an unforgettable cheese dessert. I still drawl when i think about the dumplings and the dessert we were served. Pros: delicious food, i mean d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s, professional customer care Cons: price more

Worst Experience Ever - we have NEVER walked out of a restaurant before this. 7/31/2007

My husband and I tried to eat at China Grill this past Saturday night, but did not. Arriving promptly at 9:30, we were immedately seated, it looked like a promising dinner. After 15 minutes at our table, nobody from the restaurant had been by - we had no menus, no water glasses, and had not been asked about drink orders. At this time, my husband got up and the hostess know that we had not been served. At this time we were presented with menus, who still did not ask if we would like water or to order drinks. After five more minutes of no service, we decided that it was not worth waiting over 20 minutes for any attention, not at a restaurant of that caliber. As we left the restaurant, my husband let the hostess know that our table was open, since we were leaving. She promptly responded, ""Ok, thanks."" That was the last straw for us, resulting in this review. Any restaurant that claims to be a quality restaurant should be focused on customer service, of which we got none. It is unacceptable that they did not send anyone over to our table, except with menus, for 20 minutes, and they do not deserve our business. It is also unacceptable that the hostess was so clueless as to not inform the manager we were unhappy or properly respond to our displeasure when we let her know again. \r \r We have never walked out of a restaurant before for any reason, but the treatment at China Grill was so bad that we could not think of staying. Luckily for us, Steve at Del Frisco's could fit us right in, since they always provide exceptional customer service. Pros: Prompt seating Cons: Worst service ever more
