Best

Beautiful gym, never too crowded. Extremely clean, and very service oriented. This is the only gym I would go to in NYC. Ive been a member of NYSC and Equinox. Clay is far sup...

Worst

No question...Clay is an attractive space, in fact it reminds me of the Standard Hotel lobby in LA...think Philippe Stark...10 years ago. But what's the deal with all the high rat...

Unsatisfactory to say the least 10/29/2006

First of the many things that went wrong, they had me down for the wrong service after I repeatedly told the receptionist what I had wanted and corrected him twice over the phone. And they didn't even bother to call to confirm the appointment the day before, I had to call to make sure I still had an appointment. So needless to say I ended up with the wrong service and it was terrible. \r Secondly, my body balancing massage did not 'relax and rebalance' me at all. Felt like 15 mins of actual massage and then just stretching, which I could've done way better on my own. \r When I told the front desk of my experience they offered nothing, not even an apology. \r Unhappy beginning to end. Would not go back. Pros: Convenient area Cons: Service more

It may not be for everyone, but for me it's GREAT 5/4/2006

I am baffled as to why everyone is ripping on this place. It's no more expensive than some chains and it offers a lot for its demographic, namely those busy NEW YORKers who prefer a calm, private space to work out and don't need pumping music & eye candy to break a sweat. Everyone is respectful and helpful and it's a great place to try new things or start out- my sister now loves working out (she felt uncomfortable elsewhere) and I started yoga. Classes are key to getting your $'s worth; the instructors are top-notch and there's few students. The place is always spotless and my only con is that the cardio equipment could use updating (it's adequate, but all the other equipment is much better). Pros: atmosphere, classes, clean Cons: old(ish) cardio equip more

looking to join a gym I... 6/29/2004

came to this website and read some reviews. I walked into Clay and was immediately welcomed. The gym is amazing, the staff and level of caring is top notch, the equipment is new and abundant. I challenge anyone to find a more convenient location- heart of Union Square, um every train available. Anyone who thinks this place is to she-she or can't get a good workout is obviously a raging moron. I am sorry that people define a gyms success by the amount of grunting meatheads. If you had half a brain you'd realize working out is a state of mind, a good workout can be achieved ANYWHERE. To the nay sayers of this gym, I am glad you chose not to join, the place has such a positve energy, don't want to ruin that. Needless to say I joined and haven't be let down. Cheers to Clay Pros: Equipment, Staff, Location Cons: , no pool more

Just a Bad Gym 5/17/2003

What happens when people who wish they had style get some money to design a space. Expensive finishses of sorts found in a Westin or W hotel lobby bar do not belong in the middle of a gym. The equipment, although it looks new from being hardly used, is dated and needs to updated. The staff is dishonest and shady (everyone seems to get different prices to pay for the same thing). This is not a gym, it's a style-less squandering of someone's money (and a lot based on the expensive design materials) to put a bad gym on a an ugly block. Pros: Always Empty Cons: Bad Equipment, Shady Saesgirls, Bad Location more

Clay or Mud? 1/20/2003

In the city from the Northwest and heard the buzz about this gym. For the price thought it would be on Park Ave.but to my surprise(or dismay)was in the heart of 14th street in mid-town. Was stunned on entering, beautiful(on 14th street mind you)but my reception was less than warming considering the price. As I was wondering around the gym, standing by the fire place I had to chuckle, where were the 25 women I got to choose from, where were the roses to give out? Sorry, not impressed! Pros: beautiful, be great in Trump Tow, nice fireplace Cons: way overpriced, terrible location, seemed empty of clien more

Grumped out 1/19/2003

Received a tour of this place. What a big show for not much value. The people working at the Reception desk were out to LUNCH. I guess I did not look like I could not afford the very pricy fees. There loss. I was made to feel very unimportant and very much not wanted. Not worth the trip down to ""fashionable"" 14th. street. Cons: many more

Cool to look at.. but? 12/30/2002

Very cool to look at but way too expensive. Would make a great Hotel Lobby though. Real nice. Kind of fun going with my friend but I prefer Equinox. Just a fair massage. l would not join or go back. Pros: Real pretty Cons: Expensive, Location, Massage - Just fair more

Too Much For Me 12/15/2002

I went with a friend. Way too much for me in every way. Much better deals and places in NYC. It is very pretty to look at though. Would not join or go back. Pros: pretty, not crowded, fireplace Cons: very expensive, on 14th. street more

HAPPY AT LAST!!!! 12/11/2002

I can not believe how fantastic this place is! I went with a friend to their recent holiday party and I was blown away. Completely gorgeous space to start with and the vibe that is created is so unpretensious and totally relaxed. There is a genuine quality to the way that people are treated there. The place was decorated with the most elegant arrangements and the food was delicious. They had an open bar that served the most amazing flavored champagnes...needless to say I have joined since then and feel like it is the first time that I have ever spent money in New York and not regretted it. So now that I've started working-out I am even more impressed with them. They play great music, the equipment is kept clean, they have a fantastic Pilates studio and THE BEST cafe. I love the smoothies!!! DEFINITELY A MUST! more

GOOD TO LOOK AT---BUT? 12/8/2002

Great to look at! Very pricy, very she-she. But give me a break. Belongs in Bloomies.... Not on trendy 14th. street across from the Human Rescource Center and the cheap under $20 stores next door. Nice Try Though. Pros: LOOKS GOOD!, NEW, no crows ...ever. Cons: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, the view !!! more

$$$$$$$ and Overrated! 12/6/2002

Ireland Forever!!! I came into town for a long weekend. Went to clay with a friend. What a checkie place (WHAT NERVE) It was totally empty. Not very stimulating to work out all by your lonesome. The RUB..massage was so so- had much better. Would not return .. no way. Too many other more interesting places in town. more

Finally, a club that ""gets it""!!!! 11/6/2002

I have never experienced anything like this club. When you enter you aren't assalted by loud techno music. This place is for people who want to integrate different types of training into their regimine. I have never experience the total package before joining CLAY with my wife. When my wife and I joined they helped us design a custom routine with different trainers that incorporates private Pilates, yoga, boxing not to mention the nutrition. After all of that we enjoy the deep tissue massage that we have earned. This club is not for showoffs and grunters...very refreshing concept to traing and so, so clean!!!!! more

More than a work out 11/5/2002

I just recently signed up at clay and couldn't be more pleased. Not only is the staff extremely helpful and friendly, but the personal training is also amazing. This place is great for just working out or hanging out. If you happen to be a serious weight lifter this probably isnt your place, but if you want a quiet, serene, and personable place to work out as well as relax, clay is the only place to go. Pros: atmosphere, private training, classes and equipment Cons: price more

Overpriced For Hotel Gym Atmosphere 10/31/2002

No question...Clay is an attractive space, in fact it reminds me of the Standard Hotel lobby in LA...think Philippe Stark...10 years ago. But what's the deal with all the high ratings?? If you want to lounge...by a fake fireplace, drinking a smoothie, mingling with the ""Wallpaper"" magazine set, or one of those ""ladies who lunch"" then this is the place for you...but if you are the least bit a serious weight lifter, don't even bother. Pros: lots of natural light, attractive space, trendy Cons: poorly laid out, tiny locker, way, way, overpriced more

great massage 10/29/2002

Clay offers an incredible atmosphere, good equipment, helpful and attentive staff and a fabulous massage. Go! more

Clay all the Way!!! 8/16/2002

The best health club I've every joined. The equipment is the top notch, the trainers and staff are friendly, helpful and really care. The atmosphere is like working out in your own home. Check it out. Keep up the great job. Pros: Location, Friendly, Good value Cons: Only one location more

Zen work out 8/12/2002

Quiet, elegant work out space that's focused on every detail--from the music to the cold towels. Equipment is plentiful; so far, it's not crowded. Trainers are focused and helpful. It's a great experience. Pros: Aesthetics are great, Great trainers, Great equipment Cons: Expensive, Stained rug in locker more

The Best 8/12/2002

Having been a member of NYSC and Synergy, Clay, by far, surpasses them in evertyhing. more

equinox who 8/9/2002

THE BEST GYM EVER I WAS A MEMBER AT EQUINOX UNTIL I REALISED WHAT WAS I DOING WASTING MY MONEY ON A POOR MANAGED CLUB WITH HORRIBLE TRAINERS WHEN I COULD GO TO THE BEST. THE TRAINERS ARE THE BEST IN THE CITY WHO LOVE WHAT THEY DO AND REALLY CARE ABOUT US THE CLIENTS 10 ALL THE WAY CLAY Pros: great place, The best trainers, CLEAN more

Clay is the tops! 8/9/2002

Clay is a great place to get or stay in shape, the staff is very friendly and knowledgable. more
