MonQi Fitness is the best kept secret on the UES. For busy NYers, the pay as you go method is ideal! The staff is warm and friendly, and the class offerings are terrific?well thought out and creative options not found in most gyms. The instructors are especially professional and motivational, and share a long-term commitment to the facility and clients. The management is professional yet gracious, and offers user-friendly options and incentives to meet the needs of users. The venue and props are clean and well cared for and the atmosphere is simple, keeping clients focused on their purpose. I've been to all the fancy gyms-- they can keep their "free" fancy lotions and potions in the locker room--I'll take MonQi, a well run neighborhood gym perfectly suited for smart, busy people wanting the best instructors and service. Thank you for 'getting it' MonQi Fitness!!!!
Pros: pay as you go, professional staff, warm atmosphere
Cons: great hours; would appreciate even later options

A great relaxed atmosphere with professional teachers and adults. You can absolutely get desired results in your body. Excellent teachers some of the ones I have worked with include: Matt and Abbey. I also got turned on to gyrotonics in this studio which is hard but fun. I would highly recommend it.

The Gravity gym at the Parker Meridian hotel is convenient to many workplaces in the city and has everything you need for a good workout. That said, it is in an expensive hotel and while the locker rooms are fantastic, the membership rates here are very high. One might be tempted to sign up for a membership that excludes use of the rooftop pool, but that would be a grave error. The pool is this gym's best sellng point. The view from the pool is breathtaking -- Central Park can be glimpsed -- and you can sun yourself right out on the deck. Celebrities stay at this hotel and it is common to see them in the pool also.

There is no shortage of fun things to do at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers. Feel like playing soccer (or "football"), golfing, running, jumping, or even flying a kite? You can do it all at the Chelsea Piers Sports Center. The fitness facility is excellent. There are huge places to play basketball and all kinds of team sports and the space can be rented out for parties. It's a great complex of stuff!

What makes the Manhattan Plaza Health Club so special is its indoor climbing walls. The first tryout on these walls is free, and let me tell you, it is FUN. I came to this gym expecting to only use the treadmill and weights but I got hooked on the climbing walls. I liked the people I met there, also. So again, the story is: Nice gym, great climbing walls!

More
I don't remember where I heard NYSC being called "The McDonald's of Gyms" but the description stuck with me because it's so apt. If a gym had training wheels, this would be it. Because of the numerous locations and variety of machines, I find it meets most of my needs. If I want to work out after work, there's one right near by. The same goes for work. They've got ETV's on nearly every machine. And if I need to use a restroom while out shopping, there's usually one around the corner somewhere that I can pop into. They say memberships has its perks, right?
But on the downside, the maintenance of the gyms are questionable. Usually, several machines are out seemingly for weeks at a time, and there seems to be a sense of apathy about the staff. It's usually never a good advertisement for the gym you work for when you stand right out front, in your uniform, smoking a cigarette.

I love the Fitness Center at the 92nd Street Y. It was recently renovated and the facilities are great. There's a very large pool with about 5 lap lanes. There is raquetball upstairs and everything is really clean and bright. The weight room is extensive and the cardio equipment is very plentiful and new. The locker room is great. The best part about this whole facility is that yearly membership is very inexpensive.

New York Sports Club is a good gym to join. They have state of the art equipments and nutritionists/trainers that really know their stuff. They're also very motivating. It's a great place to go if you want to get fit but be a part of the community as well. I've been going here for two years now, and I feel much healthier.
