No question...Clay is an attractive space, in fact it reminds me of the Standard Hotel lobby in LA...think Philippe Stark...10 years ago. But what's the deal with all the high rat...

5 Star Gym in Union Square. 1/18/2011

Beautiful gym, never too crowded. Extremely clean, and very service oriented. This is the only gym I would go to in NYC. Ive been a member of NYSC and Equinox. Clay is far superior. more

Doesn't Even Deserve 1 Star 1/13/2011

This place is sad. It pretends to be high end but misses the mark. Its dirty and all the people working there are unprofessional. Lazy front desk employees are too busy playing on texting to pay attention to customers. I was double charged one month and couldn't even get a return phone call about getting the issue resolved. So I had to go into their ""business office"" in person to get an answer, where the staff was having a loud conversation and the bitchy horse-faced old lady and hairy old man were talking about sterods they been doing. THIS IS PROFESSIONAL? Not to mention the place is not kept well, the classes are boring, the trainers just go through the motions, and there is nothing enjoyable about this place. Go to Boom Fitness, Club H, David Barton, Crunch, or Hype instead. more

Wonderful Experience 12/18/2010

Great experience! You get a robe and slippers when you come in that have been just washed. They put it in a bag for you, you put them on and go to the waiting area. The rooms themselves are dark, relaxing, and have fine, high-percale bedsheets. The massage therapist I had (don't remember his name) had extensive training at the Swedish Massage Institute and over 6 years of experience. The deep tissue massage was very relaxing and he also helped me to stretch. The glass of lemon water and sauna afterwards were also refreshing. Go to this spa when you get the chance! more

Awesome facial/skincare!! My new place. 9/26/2010

AWESOME FACIAL!!!! The whole package!!! more

Excellent spa find for facial!!!! 8/26/2010

I have not been for a facial in the city for a long time. While there are many spas to choose from, I had yet to find a place with a practitioner, worthy of my time, money, and skin! I usually go when on vacation now a days. Mostly I want the best care from the esthetician, one who is skilled, and also who has great touch. It is hard to find the whole package. The woman, Caryn who worked with me was very accommodating, used great products, and really knew her stuff!!!! She was down to earth, not at all pushy, or stuck up like some of the sales people, (oops I mean estheticians) which is such a turn off, even when we want to buy needed products. There is a lot of crap out there, and she was a gem. She only talked when necessary, so I could 'relax', and I did. Its hard to wind down, and it takes me a while, with the stresses of life. She did deep cleaning with extractions, and used Vitiman C, with AHA. She also did a little work on my neck, and she felt better than some massage therapists! And I'm very particular, fussy. Awesome results, with less pending irritation on my face. My skin really asorbed all the great ingredients, and she used only what worked. I was really impressed! And I learned a few things. The fitness area I saw was very zen feeling, as far as fitness goes. The cafe had some great healthy creative options, will come back for a meal, or real smoothie. Really good energy, Clay is a temple like said. more

Great skincare treatment 8/12/2010

Wow, I found an excellent esthetician who was very skilled in her trade. She was proffesional, and took very good care of my skins personal needs, and actually listened to me. The products are of great quality, and had awesome benefits, only the'good stuff'. My estie was also wonderful with her massage techniques, and had a lot of wellness experience. Ahhhhhhhhh. Well worth the time, and money for sure!! Thanks Clay. more

Great Facial and Brows 7/16/2010

I came here for the first time last week, and I have to say, this place is a hidden treasure!\r \r You definitely have to keep your eyes peeled to find their door (just a little orange sign until you're right on top of the entrance), but once you're in, this gym/spa is like stepping into another world. \r \r I had a facial and a peel with Maya, and I have to say it was the best I've had in years in the city. I don't get facials too often and when I do, it's really about great extractions. She had a perfect touch and was so thorough. She also offered great tips after and somehow still made the facial incredibly relaxing. \r \r I caught a special that day for 1/2 price brow shaping and since she had been great, I went for it. Also perfect, and very thorough.\r \r Definitely worth every penny, and I'll be back here regularly. Pros: atmosphere, service, quality Cons: only dry sauna more

Great place 7/15/2010

I was a bit skeptical about this place when I saw the membership price, but after a tour and a trial month there, I'm hooked! Clay makes working out every day plausible. The cafe offers tons of delicious choices (the Greek wrap is my personal favorite) and the menu is color coded to make choosing your meal easier. Pros: member lounge, rooftop deck, health food cafe, saunas more

Super Esthetician 2/4/2010

My estitician was superb. She had years of experience and worked as a consultant on many skin care lines. I had a wonderful microdermabrasion with a soothing mask afterwards. The gym and cafe here are also excellent quality. This place is top shelf! more

Do not get a facial 1/31/2010

I bought a gift certificate for a facial as an x-mas gift for a close family member and it was the worse decision I made. They have a very nice website but please don't get fooled. The person I bought the facial for was completely unsatisfied with the facial. The woman who was doing the facial would not stop talking throughout the entire session. She was not focused on her job and instead more interested in socializing. The extraction was terrible because she only brushed upon a few spots very quickly and the person seemed inexperienced. The facial was so bad that she broke up in zits the following day.....never again will I step foot in here. Pros: nice gym, I guess Cons: bad facials more

ok 6/25/2008

went to Clay last wk to ck it out and I was not impressed as I thought I would be. I looked on their website beforehand and was really excited but when I got there, I realized that someone just took really good photos for the site. +'s: cafe - really good healthy food & smoothies - BEST. # combination lockers - no need to bring a lock. personal saunas. sun deck. classes - I only took the power sculpt & yoga which were pretty cool. all machines have working TVs on them. didn't get too crowded. people were friendly. cold eucalyptus scented towels. body wash has a nice grapefruit smell. -'s: the ceilings were way to low so it got pretty hot in there. locker rm is small & little funky smelling - this drove me crazy. the lockers could be a bit bigger. don't get me wrong, this is a very nice gym, but comparing it to Club H Fitness that I cked out the wk before, I don't think it is as nice and not worth the price. Pros: cafe, classes Cons: small locker room more

Oh, yeah! Great Spa 5/8/2008

I used to come here yeasr ago and I have rediscovered it and I am happy. It is the best relaxation massage I have ever had and the staff is not anything less than awesome! I will never forget Clay Spa again. Go, I promise you'll be happy! more

Clay is my Temple 4/7/2008

This ""gym"" (and I use that word hesitantly) is truly my sanctuary. The staff is super-friendly and accommodating and the members are unpretentious. \r \r I've been a member at Crunch and Equinox and if you just want to lift weights or show off those are the places for you. However, if you want a relaxed atmosphere where you can enter into your own ""zone"" then Clay is it. \r \r I'm a martial artist and Clays is essentially my own private kung fu studio. Many of the staff are martial artists so they are definitely in tune with my needs. Plus, I've found some great sparring partners! Moreover, the equipment, namely the FreeMotion devices, are centered around core-strength. Working stabilizer muscles will ensure that you prevent injury. \r \r If you simply want to grunt, lift-heavy, and bulk-up this is not quite the place for you. However, if you want a total wellness, functional strength workout that will give you a slamming body then join Clay.\r \r Also, the cafe is super-delicious and very healthy. Even if you don't sign up, you should definitely stop by and have a meal - everything from breakfast to dinner to snacks and smoothies. \r \r Oh, and the showers have shaving mirrors in them. I ALWAYS shave in the shower so it was good to see I could do the same at Clay. \r \r One last thing, it's not a ""trainer heavy"" facility. Some comments have said that most members work out with trainers, but I have not seen that. I guess it depends on what time you go. However, all gyms have trainers and I've seen plenty at Crunch and Equinox. I think that's unavoidable no matter where you go. \r \r Highly, highly recommended. Pros: Very accommodating and friendly staff. Your needs will be met. Cons: Could use a fresh coat of paint. more

What a massage team 2/3/2008

In the past 6 months i have to say that the Spa at Clay have been the Very BEST! Not many amenities..... \r \r It does help nme Relaxing, and unrushed, Leo who i recommend, have improved my work-out programs. I must say the people/members at client are a good networking people, which I like.\r \r Cheers more

Damned if I do... 8/20/2007

Have worked out here three years, the space is great in every way. I have two issues and unfortunately am torn between staying and leaving...but the problem is where to go.\r First the equipment is very limited, it's great if you only workout with a trainer but lackes depth as far as equipment is concerned.\r Second , many of the members do workout with trainers, which leads during certain times having to navigate a relatively narrow workout floor around a dozen trainers and an equal number of members, they tend to not have gym etiquette and are oblivious to where they plop themselves down and the mess they leave for paying members...time to move! more

Best Gym ANYWHERE 6/3/2007

CLAY is my sanctuary in every way. I breathe more easily, feel completely taken care of by the staff and love, love, love the rooftop deck. more

fabulous gym! 2/18/2007

i love this place! i joined about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. i agree that it might not be for everyone, but if you're in the market for a gym that's a cut above your average NYSC, you should check out clay. the amenities are fabulous--from the cold towels to the brand new cardio equipment w/ personal tvs, to the gorgeous flowers in the locker rooms. i have been working with a trainer since i joined and she's great. it's just an enjoyable place to work out. Pros: gorgeous facility, location, great cafe more

Converted Quick! 1/11/2007

I found out about CLAY through a friend of mine who uses the club when she is town from L.A. She recommeded CLAY because I have been dissatisfied with the larger spa chains in the area. I called to get more information about the spa and the person I spoke with was very helpful with educated descriptions of different treatments they offer and also gave me basic information on membership. When I came in for my treatment the front desk was very accomodating and showed me to the locker room to change into the robe and sandals. I met with someone in membership after my wonderful custom massage, saw the entire club, and fell in love! I've been a member for a week now and I couldn't feel more at home and happy with my decision to join! Pros: Relaxing Fireside Lounge, Accomodating Staff, Great Group Fitness more

Best Health Club in NY 12/31/2006

Brand new cardio equipment and spinning bikes. Everything was replaced a month or two ago and I couldn't be happier. They also have the ""cardio wave"" machine which I have yet to find at another gym. Trainers are helpful and informative. New group fitness classes are added seasonally, some favorites are Jay's ""NFL training"" class (not for the weak of heart), Latin Grooves, and all of Kristin's Yoga classes. You can even get a few friends together to create your own pilates class. The smoothies are addictive, and the cafe staff is ready with a nutrition facts sheet if you want to compare carbs, calories, and protein. The front desk more often than not will greet you by name, and if a service needs to be customized especially for you usually everyone is more than happy to oblige. Also there is complimentary concierge service via a phone in the member's lounge with a direct line to Abigail Michaels. Glad I found Clay a year ago, I was relatively new to fitness and it was comforting to see that other members were a range of shapes and sizes. Also their spa is wonderful, get a massage from Thomas and you'll walk out feeling like butter. Pros: new machines, great trainers/instructors, concierge service, welcoming/unpretentious staff, fabulous spa Cons: one location more

Exquisite 11/10/2006

This is by far the best gym I've blonged to in New York. Its clean, not crowded, the machines are always in excellent order/condition. The locker room is clean. Towels are fluffy, soft and clean. Knowledgeable pilates instructors. Great cafe. It more expensive than most gyms. Pros: Clean, Well kept, Curteous staff. Not crowded Cons: Expenisve, only one location. more
