Good Old BBQ 7/28/2008

Nice college crowd and bbq. The ribs are very tasty and so is the pulled pork sandwich. However, I would probably pass on the shrimp po boy. Just a no-nonsense restaurant where you can relax and have some good eats and drink. Pros: Good BBQ. College crowd. Cons: Small place. more

Great Place for a Birthday! 6/20/2008

I went here for my birthday that happened to be on a tuesday night and it was awesome!! They had karaoke so right away I was hooked. The waitress was so nice she gave me a complimentary fish bowl drink for my bday complete with an alligator in it! Everyone was totally chill and you can act and do pretty much whatever and you wont feel out of place or that your being too loud. I would highly recomend this for an awesome place to go with a group or to mingle with the locals of the upper west side. Pros: Excellent Wait Stafff, great atomosphere, karaoke tuesdays rock Cons: bartender wasnt very quick other than that it was great more

Cheap beer and good eats if you don't mind frat houses 11/22/2006

The beer was well priced, and the wings are some of the better ones I've tried in the city. Bartending staff is generally pleasant and the crowd is young and in a stupor. Very reminiscent of a college - frat hangout, but worth visiting nonetheless Pros: Cheap, Good food Cons: Dumpy more

fabulous ribs, very friendly and attentive waitress Melissa 7/26/2006

we've been to this UWS restaurant a few times and always find the ribs fabulous. Our favorite is the northern style ribs which fall off the bone, and the well seasoned honey BBQ sauce on top of the ribs is just phenomenal!!!!! The dry rub and southern style are both very good too, so are the homemade trimmings, especially the cole slaw, fire fries (yum!), collard greens, and candied yams with walnuts. Pros: ribs (especially northern style), waitress Melissa Cons: ambience (looks like a sports bar) more

oh snap its good 6/22/2006

good stuff. ribs fall off the bone and after all my drinks so did I. A bit more uptown then I am used to but worth the trip. more

Go Heels! 9/11/2005

If you wentto school in the south, this is a great place to get some good southern BBQ, and watch ACC games. Brings you back to the good ole days... more

Great Southern BBQ 6/26/2005

I am from the south and miss my BBQ. This restaurant made me feel right at home with the relaxed atmosphere and great food. And you can't beat the fact that there are food and drink specials almost every night of the week. Pros: Great food, Good specials Cons: average service more

Where the North meets the South. 6/1/2005

I am from North Carolina and a graduate of NC State. Finding Brother Jimmys is an oasis for a southerner that is missing home or just wants to be in a place that is an homage for ACC fans. The food is great southern fare, bringing in both great BBQ and lots of great fried veggies. The appitizers are not to be missed either, pulled pork or chicken quesadillas are tops and their nachos will give any restaurant a run for their money. But the best are the rib tips, do not miss. Go, drink, eat and have fun. Pros: Great food, Great drinks, Beautiful waitstaff Cons: Crowded on game night more

Food Great; Take Out Serviice so so 5/29/2005

The owners do not overly boil their ribs as so many other rib joints in NY do. The side orders are pretty good too. I've eaten in both the Westside and Eastside restaurants once but have ordered take out from both places often. The resturants are both noisy are a great place to watch sports. I've ordered take out often. The Amsterdam restaurant consistently leaves parts of the order out. They readily give credits. Pros: Delicious ribs, sides good, consistent Cons: Take out more

great food - loud folks - good swillin' fun 5/23/2005

Despite the corny Christmas lights and the really really loud bar crowd, Jimmy's got the best ribs in NY - the dry rub are fantastic. The swamp water leaves you wishing to take a trip to the bayou to have some genuine swamp water. more

Pit with Ribs 3/28/2005

This is to get some decent BBQ and a good place to watch a game. It's a big ACC bar durin college football and basketball days. Even southern boys can feel some love in NYC. Ribs and wings were pretty good, but a little small. Service is questionable. Pros: Holy Crap Parking! Cons: Uptown more

What happend to Bro Jim's 12/11/2004

i've been going here for years, and the food has always been a highlight, always. yet something has changed in the last year.....the food has gone sharply downhill. what used to be a place that served some very good ""south for your mouth"" is serving mass produced southern fare, with no local flavor or uniqueness. i would have bet my last dollar that the chicken fried steak i ordered & ate had been in the freezer not 30mins before. i got a big grilled chicken salad with ranch that had ranch that tasted like literally nothing. that and a lot of the other dishes have for some reason gone very south, no pun intended. it's a huge disappointment. what used to be a place of great comfort food is now just like any other mass produced semi-chain. it's a shame, it used to be so good. Pros: bar, bartenders, beer specials more

Do you miss the Southeast? 6/15/2004

This place is a home away from home for ACC & SEC transplants. Your school's pennant will likely adorn the walls - I see Clemson's every time I visit! I have been to the Upper West Side (Amsterdam & 80 something?) and Upper East Side (2nd Avenue & 92?) locations several times each, and have never been disappointed in the waitresses' abilities to bring me frequent drinks with smiles, and the cooks to prepare authentic southern BBQ ribs and sandwiches. And all this at somewhere between Southern prices and NYC prices...fortunately a little closer to Southern. During football season, you can reserve tables or rooms, and if you have the numbers & a little Southern courtesy, you can watch your team's game. Their food & drink specials make it really inexpensive sometimes, the website is great, and they email you when they do something special. Pros: Great food, inexpensive, friendly more

BBQ, ACC Hoops, and Trash Can Punch 8/18/2003

Brother Jimmys is a taste of the south right in NYC. go here to watch ACC college hoops or March Madness. guaranteed to meet other die-hard hoops fans. also they have great southern BBQ and great drinks such as Trash Can Punch Pros: BBQ, ACC Hoops, Trash Can Punch Cons: crowded more

WHAT HAPPENED 8/6/2003

i was here three times since i rated the place in dec. and this place has fallen off. Ladies one the hot bartenders are gone, two the food is awful , three WHERE WAS ALL THAT FUN, and finally i do not know now who is more stuck up the bartenders on the westside one or the one on the eastside where we went last weekend and they have male bartenders that think there hot but there not, but want to say thanks to Tom. Cons: BARTENDERS, BARTENDERS, BARTENDERS more

lady from the south 5/18/2003

My husband and I were very dissappointed with our visit yesterday. Being from the South,an NC, my husband said the ribs were nothing like he had ever tasred, and were awful. The wait staff was more concerned with being Hooter wannabes, than waiting on customer. The bus boys were actually more attentive. Need to go back to drawing board. Pros: bus boys, sweet tea Cons: service, food more

what happened is right 4/26/2003

service use to be very good and fast.i sat and waitted for 20 minutes for food order. the girls were just hang out and talking to each other. what is up with the cheesey guy behind the bar i ordered a bud and he begins to flex and say bottle or draft are you kidding me. thought this was a geat br but i guess it isn't Pros: the hostess was fast Cons: food took forever, witress took along ti more

All our BBQ is smoked in-house, using COOKSHACK brand Smokers. Even the hickory wood we use to smoke is shipped up straight from the South. Everything is smoked slowly and carefully--up to 10 hours--in order to get the best tasting, juiciest BBQ in town.

Back when Brother jimmy?s first opened, we didn't even have a bar! Nowadays, it's hard to imagine a Brother Jimmy's without a happy crowd hanging out, watching sports and sipping on one of our thematically inspired drinks such as Plantation Punch, Carolina Cooler, Southern Belle or the infamous ?Swamp Water?.
