Save your money 3/2/2011

It is shocking how in such a competitive restaurant market food (and service) can be so average. The $28 halibut accompanied by a mound of starch (called risotto) can be consumed in three bites (four if you remember your table manners). How is it possible that in one of the best cities for bread the offering here was inedible (another chemical experiment in starch gone bad). I was hoping desert would turn around my disappointment. True to form the poached pear was a mound of chopped pears with some melted Toll House chips. Dinner for four including wine and tip ran close to $400. The prices and food here can kill a romantic buzz in no time. Jump in a cab and go to Baltazhar instead. Romance and pleasure are sure to follow. more

Excellent cuisine 12/27/2009

I went to this restaurant on December 18, 2009 with my co-workers for a holiday dinner. The chef, Hector Tice, who came out and introduced himself, gave us a breakdown of the meals. I had the salmon with vegetables. It was simply delicious! Awesome! It has been a while since i have gone to a restaurant and felt that my money was well spent. I would recommend this restaurant for its superv service. Pros: sea food dishes Cons: No drawbacks at this time more

The Best !!! 12/21/2009

It was a wonderful experience...from the service of the host to the waiter. And the food was excellent...the portion, the temperature of our meal and the flavor. My compliments to the chef !! It was absolutely exquisite !!\r \r Me and my friends will most definitely return for another great get-together and delicious meal !! Pros: The food itself more

Love love the Black Duck 3/27/2009

I used to go to the Black Duck all the time when at my former company as it was literally around the corner. Met up with some old co-workers last night at the duck and now i remember why we always go there for after work. Great drinks and friendly staff. Plus they have that sweet loungy couch area in the front for us to hang out. This is a good spot to go in Flatiron for sure. Cannot comment on the food since i have never eaten here...but they do give out little chocolates!! Pros: Great Cocktails (and strong cocktails) Cons: not near my office anymore more

Very much worth the trip to NYC! 3/23/2009

I am a research geek.. My hubby & I wanted something special, but yet different & romantic for our 10 year anniversary. I read the reviews previously posted--although everyone is intitled to their opinion, my hubby & I absolutely loved the place! Hospitality was outstanding, the food was absolutely delicious & the atmosphere was simply cozy & everything that we could have ever hoped for! I was very suprised by our cozy booth with rose petals scattered about & the jazz band playing in the distance. The service was outstanding & Richard, was very accomidating to our needs and wants. Being from Texas, that says a lot! The Black Duck is definately a best kept secret that I am telling ALL my friends about! I can't wait to return! Pros: the food & surroundings Cons: ??????????????????? more

Disappointed 2/17/2009

My boyfriend and I made a reservation for Valentines Day at the Black duck and were extremely disappointed. From the $85 per person prefix menu, the appetizers, yellowtail, clams, & scallops were pretty good. However the entrees were awful. The steak was cooked well, while we ordered it medium rare. The lobster was so overcooked it tasted like a sponge. We were already an hour and a 1/2 into dinner and didn't want to send the food back. I haven't seen the regular menu, but will not go back to try it. Pros: Ambience Cons: Food more

Great Duck at the Duck 2/16/2009

The Black Duck is mostly known for it's excellent seafood and was just listed under Best Clam Chowders in Best of City Search, I noticed, but this dinner-only restaurant has really high quality steaks too (Filet Mignon, NY Strip, Surf & Turf which is Tuna Loin and Filet). I also asked about the quality of the burger meat and found out they grind the burger meat in-house, I'll try it next time, 15 bucks. They just added Long Island Duckling to the menu!! Which makes sense, I like duck a lot, but am very picky about it. This is the best I've ever had. The breast was pan seared on the skin side so it was very crispy and tender inside served on parsnip puree, yumm, and with an excellent Pomegranate Apple Cider sauce; it also comes with the duck leg prepared as a very well executed confit. ONLY $23!! Pros: Incredible food, free live jazz wknds, nice fireside lounge Cons: Don't tell your friends, I want to still get a table more

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! 2/15/2009

Recently dined here BASED upon all the positive reviews. They are all fake. Apart from getting sick 5 hrs after dinner. the food was mediocre at best...and the help is rude and inconsiderate. It took us 4 hrs to get our meal that was cold, stale and tasteless. If you like food or have any sense whatsoever never eat at the black duck. Pros: leaving the place Cons: food, service, everything more

Good Flavors, Poor Service. Have you ever been asked to leave as soon as desert landed/?? 2/14/2009

I was looking forward to Black Duck, as many of the reviews were stellar. To their credit, the food was well prepared and presented. Flavors mingled well and were not overdone. However, the service was atrocious. Our waiter never once said a word to us, just took order, and dropped off plates. I would have bought some wine if he even asked if I wanted a bottle. I had to remind him to bring bread and the comp. Champagne. The tip was already included as a service fee (there were only two of us) I hate seeing that on a bill. As soon as dessert was served, we were kindly asked to HURRY UP. We were at the rest. for about 90 mins, and then everyone in our section was asked to leave. Sorry black duck, never again... Pros: Tasty, well presented food Cons: Service, Service, Service. more

A REAL GEM OF A RESTAURANT 11/24/2008

This place is a gem. Cozy and romantic, it offers multiple seating options to suit your mood and the circumstances -- a back-room hideway, a semi-formal dining room, a long bar for drinkers and solo diners, a lounge area (with a fireplace for those cold winter nights), and two variations of outdoor seating (intimite patio and public sidewalk) for those warm summer and fall evenings. The service was perfectly spot-on, the food was exceptional through all three courses I enjoyed, and the wine was fairly priced (which is to say I got what I paid for). I can't recommend ""Black Duck"" highly enough, but *don't tell your friends* -- I don't want it to be too crowded for my return visit :) Pros: Cusine, ambiance, service more

Great early dinner 10/31/2008

Was in the neighborhood to see a play at the Baruch theatre and saw Black duck was close by and decided to take a chance and make res. \r When I walked in to a dim rest. I had my doubts but was greeted with a smile and shown immediately to our table. Decor is semi-nautical but tasteful. We each had a diff. appy and entree and all were excellent. I had salad made w/pears and fish of the day which was prepared just right. My husband had steak&fries- which he said was very good and my bro had crab cake appy which looked delicious (he said it was) and wasabil tuna which was cooked to perfection. I would definately return to this rest if we are in the neighborhood again Pros: service, food, Cons: bathroom was shared w/hotel and a little hard to locate more

seasoned new yawkers flock to (park) south for the winter(and summer&spring&autumn &fall) 10/30/2008

Once you walk into this establishment there is an air of relaxed ambiance, which is complimented by a light smattering of a maritime milieu, which does not come off as a kitschy contrivance.. As we placed our orders for the appetizers Chef Tice walked by and stopped by our table to greet our party and suggest some of the day's gastronomic offerings. more

I love Black Duck 10/27/2008

I love Black Duck\r \r How can one not love a place with creative dishes without the expensive pricing?\r \r They always make everything look pretttty.\r \r How can one not love a place that gives you the perfect portion? Not too small. Not too big.\r \r They always balance the right amount of meat, veggie and carb on your plate.\r \r Servers are always nice and they know their food.\r \r enough said.\r Pros: food, service more

great customer service 9/19/2008

Happy Hour 7/23/2008

My wife and I visited the Black Duck last week - the prices on Happy Hour certainly have changed since last December - drafts now $4 - the $5 cocktails now $9 and the $6 martinis are $11 - to be fair I must mention you can now get a glass of the ""house"" red or white wine for $5 more

Some of the best service in New York, period. 2/25/2008

My girlfriend and I frequently are hunting for new restaurants at around the 40 dollar a person range. I stumbled upon this here on city search and decided to go in on a whim. When walking in I was immediately and I mean immediately greeted by Richard, the matrade. He let me know that it will be a few minutes since they are just clearing out a large party but offered us a seat in a lounge where we were washed over by a small jazz trio. He took our drink order and when he came back he said that he had set up a table for us in the back where it was a little quieter and more private. He introduced himself as Richard and showed us a beautiful table where we for the next few hours gorged ourselves on a delicious wine men you and nuevo- american cuisine. Upon leaving he remembered me by name and told me to get home safe. I will definitely be returning Richard. Pros: Service, Wine, and Jazz Cons: Not for children more

Unpretentious? 11/2/2007

\r Unpretentious? What a laugh. What was with the minature head of lettuce I had last night? What did I pay, 10, 12 bucks for a ""wedge"" salad? I've had bigger brussel sprouts! Seriously, do you think the Black Duck is worthy of 4 star steakhouse pricing? The ""live Jazz"" is well, live, but that's about it. I'm not sure I'd stay for it anyway...just getting through dinner with the racket coming through the lame sound system was more than I could handle. The ""ambience"" was more like a college bar after finals with the over priced food on the menu playing the part of the hangover.\r more
