AVOID BRENDA 12/22/2010

I wish there was a way to give 0 stars. And apologies in advance for a long, drawn-out review. I had never been to An'jels before but read all of the great reviews so I set up an appointment with Jamie (the owner). When I got there only one person was in the salon and after a few minutes she let me know that she was Brenda and that Jamie had left early (my appointment was for 5:30pm). It didn't bother me that much since I'd never been there before anyway and so we continued on (which I seriously regret now). Strike 1: not giving me the stylist I requested I went in for a relaxer (it'd been 9 weeks since my last one) and was immediately met with resistance from Brenda. She told me that instead she would like to do a protein treatment and that I should come back in 2 weeks to do a relaxer. I told her that wasn't what I wanted to do and that I needed a relaxer, but she persisted on, her voice and demeanor becoming more and more aggressive every time I said no and tried to explain why I didn't want to go that route. After about 10 minutes of her trying to up-sell me I told her that I really didn't want to do it and wasn't comfortable anymore and asked her to give me my coat back (they hang your coat up for you when you first come in). She told me NO! And then lowered her voice and tried to explain more calmly what she wanted to do. I really needed a relaxer (going on Christmas vacation tomorrow) and so I told her that I would do both treatments at the same time (I figured the protein treatment couldn't hurt and I needed to get a relaxer). Strike 2: Berating me into buying more products The next problem happened when Brenda was actually doing the relaxer. At one point some of the product ended up on my face next to my hairline and I tried to rub it off with the towel. Brenda stopped me and told me it was fine because it wound up on the base protector that she had applied. I let it go. As she's washing the relaxer out of my hair my face near my hairline starts to BURN. I point it out to her and she tries washing it out again -- it takes a few washes and application of aloe for it to stop burning. She then tries to sit me up to do the protein treatment and I tell her no because I didn't want to risk worsening the irritation and didn't particularly trust her at this point. Strike 3: CHEMICAL BURN She starts blowing out my hair and the receptionist that had returned while Brenda was applying the relaxer comes over to me and tells me that she's closing out the register and leaving so I need to pay now. I tell her I'm not comfortable tipping Brenda when she hasn't finished yet (I was paying all on card and didn't have that much cash) and she tells me that that's the only way. I pay and leave a tip and the receptionist closes out the cash register and leaves. Strike 4: Payment before seeing the end result (which really bit me in the ass later) Brenda starts trimming my hair. She points me away from the mirror so that I can't see what she's doing. I ask nicely if she could turn me so that I can see and she tells ""just relax, I know what I'm doing"". I say ok and now realize that I should have just stood up for myself. When she finishes flatironing my hair she finally turns me and asks if I like it. The first thing I notice is that it's not even (I had a bob that ends at my chin) and I say that to her. She flips out and says that I asked for a trim and that's what she gave me. I point out that normally when people trim, they make sure that they do so evenly. She told me that I wasn't going to be happy no matter what she did and said I should just leave. I got angry and told her that she was the most unprofessional stylist I've ever met and that I want my tip back and she told me that I'd have to wait until tomorrow when Jamie, the owner, is in to do so. Strike 5: Uneven ""trim"" and horrendous customer service I will definitely be there tomorrow to complain to Jamie and get my tip back. more

Finally Great Hair Care, 12/22/2010

So here I am- tired of going to the Dominican Salons- searching for a salon that will specialize in hair care,I think I have found it at Anjels. I can not lie though my first experience there was a little touch and go. I got there for my appointment and was warmly greeted by Eboni. She offered to take my coat and a refreshment. NICE. It was time for my wash. The water was really cold !!!!! and then the water was really hot !!!!!! She said she has to let the water run for a bit . After the wash, she blow my hair out and told me to go and sit in Jamie's chair. She gave me some magazines and told me that Jamie had stepped out and would be back shortly. I remembered Jamie saying to me that the whole process would take about an hour the most an hour and a half. ( i wondered if she figured her errands in the time quote) Jamie arrived and she started to do my hair, she clipped my ends, which i have to say ladies is a little bit on the pricey side ( $35) now that might not be pricey to some but understand that I'm coming from the Dominicans "" $5 extra to clip your ends Mamie"" to $35 OUCH !!! . In conclusion I have to say I was so happy with the end result and you will be satisfied as well . and the compliments that I received that night from my girlfriends at dinner made me feel like I made a good move. more

California style in NY 12/7/2010

Im from L.A. and have been in the city for months searching for a good place to go. A co-worker of mine suggest that we stop by this place near by on our lunch break... we work close by An'jels in midtown, but i was leery of going to the hair salon on lunch because we all know how long it takes! I was pleasantly surprised. I was in and out in an hour! Unheard of! I will be back with friends! Thanks Jamie! more

Fabulous Hair 9/14/2010

Went today for the first time for a permanent color and Nycayen Moore hooked me up!!!! He seriously rocks and knows how to work the iron :o) \r \r I can't to go back. My hubby says this is the best my hair has looked since going to NY stylists and I couldn't agree more. Run, don't walk to An'jels salon; you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to ask for Nycayen. more

This place is a DISASTER! 7/25/2010

Idk about this place. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine. When first called the place i was greeted by a kind person but when I met my stylist Jamie I was so decieved. She was very unattentive and just seemed as though she wanted me out of her chair asap. She was very vague in what she was going to do with my hair and just seemed as though she was so eager for me to be gone. Her assistant Christian was a sweetheart though, I would say out of all the employees there she was the most attentive and professional and might I add she was beautiful. But this place just seemed to be more than what it is and if you do decide to make your way there dont tell them i sent you! Pros: NON Cons: Ughh more

Anjels Salon 7/23/2010

Most importantly, a warm welcome and appointments are kept on par. An’jels Salon does the best hair extensions ever! The products they use on your natural hair gives it such a soft, luxurious texture… it’s amazing! They do very small braiding, no lumps or bumps and your extensions lasts a long time. I also recommend purchasing the hair from the salon. The hair so very natural, very light on the braids, never gets tangled and expect compliments always. \r \r The staff is professional and is so very attentive to the needs of your hair. An’jels is by far a top-notch salon. I wouldn’t go anywhere else! I am very happy with my hair stylist Brenda! An’jels Salon is highly recommended! Pros: Lasting extensions Cons: None whatsoever! more

Never going here again!!!! 7/8/2010

When I went to Anjel's, my goal was to get my hair trimmed in order to clean up my grow out efforts. I explained to Kim at the front desk exactly what I wanted, and how I've been having a hard time finding a stylist who doesn't want to keep cutting my hair off. She completely understood and relayed my request to Andrew, who was the stylist assigned to me.\r \r First of all, Andrew proceeded to wash my hair in cold water without forewarning or asking me (it was a hot day and he thought he was doing me a favor). While he shampooed my hair, he was singing along with the music playing in the salon (this was no fun). He did not dry my hair well, and I had water dripping down my face as he began to work on me. I mentioned this to him, but he didn't respond (perhaps he didn't hear me because he was still singing!). He wasn't organized and was asking someone for various items he needed.\r \r I explained to Andrew once again that I was growing out my hair and just wanted it ""bobbed"" at the bottom to clean it up. I became suspicious when he just kept cutting and cutting and I heard him using a shaver thing. Sure enough, he butchered the back of my hair and it was just as short as the original cut I was trying to grow out.\r \r When I showed it to Kim at the front desk, she was obviously irritated at Andrew. He didn't show me the back, like most stylists do by handing me a mirror, but I could feel how short it was (it was shaved from the middle of my head down!). I was still in shock when I paid. Andrew kept telling me that I would get a lot of compliments on my hair (who cares when it's not what I want and doesn't reflect who I am?).\r \r I went back to work (I had gone during my lunch hour) and while I did receive compliments, lots of folks wondered why I went so short when they knew I was growing it out. I hated having to explain over and over again what had happened to me.\r \r I was in tears by the time I got home and I wanted to just die when my husband took a picture of the back of my head and showed it to me. He actually had to clean up the bottom for me with his clippers because it was all raggedy. He called the salon on my behalf and demanded a refund. They offered to give me a free shampoo (generous, huh?). They finally said they would credit my card the next day, which didn't happen. It took a couple more calls and I finally received my refund a week later.\r \r Stay away from this place!!!!!!! Cons: Unprofessional more

Best Salon in New York 9/3/2009

Since I moved to New York I've been searching for a salon that suited my busy lifestyle and high expectations. Anjels Salon far exceeded my expectations! Anjels is like an oasis providing great customer service and high quality work at a reasonable price. Jamie is the best stylist I've found, and does excellent extensions, cuts and styles. The salon provides hair for sale and after trying many other brands I am convinced that this is the best hair! It's very manageable, natural-looking, and it lasts forever. I have nothing but rave reviews about the salon, stylists and hair. Pros: Beautiful salon, Great extensions, terrific ambience, Cons: None! more
