My look has always been classic and natural, so it was a complete shock when I walked out from my trusted salon of ten years with a crown of orange/bronzy hair. Not wanting to return to the scene of the crime, I walked into Tess Hair Salon a day later and was directed to Rodney who immediately put me at ease. He has more than earned my trust and my business as he managed to not only remedy my hair, but somehow tweaked it into the best cut/color I have ever had. more

I'm going to start this by saying I have NEVER written a BAD review. EVER! I stopped in this place today for a blow out. I have curly hair & figured I'd just have it diffused not to waste to much time. I told the stylist I usually use a leave in conditioner & curl creme. She used mousse. Very drying. I didn't say anything because she's the professional & didn't want to seem to picky. She diffused it, the whole time touching it and running her fingers through it. EVERYONE who has or works with curly hair knows that is a HUGE mistake. Needless to say my hair looked horrible. It felt dry and was one huge knot. You could not see a defined curl anywhere on my head. I didn't complain or mention my dissapointment while I was there. But when I got home & looked in the mirror I was so dissapointed that I spent money this awful blowout.....What I am the MOST angry about is when I called the salon to tell them how I felt the guy behind the desk didn't even give an apology, ""It looked fine to me when you left here. I dont know what you did to it when you got home but we dont give refunds. You can come in & have it redone."" he said. Seriously, dude???? I work the front desk at a salon (If it were closer I would have went there today but didn't have the time as it's in BK) and I would NEVER say that to a client! And if I did say that, I wouldn't have my job still. I have had better experiences at the Lemon Tree! more

After going to the same stylist for 8 years for highlights, I decided to try another salon given my stylist only works very limited hours these days. Unfortunately it was a disaster and my hair looked awful. It wasn’t natural and it was very dark in certain areas and barely lighter in others. Basically money thrown down the drain. I heard great things about Rodney and after he saw what was done to my hair, he worked me into his busy schedule and came to the rescue. He spent two hours redoing everything from stripping the bad color out and putting different tones of colors to different areas to make it look very natural. I am so thankful for his brilliance and attention to detail. He is truly an expert in his field and I am glad to say I found my new stylist! Thanks again Rodney. more

I went for the first time to ask for the price of hair treatment since my hair is very dry because of all the hair colors. So the girl who answers the phone called Rodney. He was very nice but he told me that my hair color was too brassy so he would give me some highlight and glossy on top of the hair color that I have.When I asked for the price he did not want to tell me but after he told me $210,00 for a highlight. I was in shock how he was so expensive. My hair is very short so I don't understand the reason for the over price. Also he was so pushing to make me book an appointment with him in the same day. I did not like that because everyone in that salon was watching me. . What can I say about this salon is too expensive and I don't care how good you are but I would not pay so much money for the first time. Come on be reasonable!!! more

Rita is a great colorist-my hair looks great it looks natural with the right combo of color-never to light, red, brassy or chunky she actually corrected a number of those problems that I had from various other hair stylists when I started going to her! She really listens to what you want, does a great hair cut and is really nice! more

Where should I begin. Probably from the way I heard of this ""wonderful"" salon. A few of my friends have gone to Color by Tess for years and each of them say its great. My best friend has Rodney for a hairstylist. So I decided to give it a try. I went to the salon to fix my hair for a party my husband's firm was hosting. I ask for Rodney as my friend had recommended, but instead I was redirected to another hairstylist, Marina. I was a little bit furious towards the person who redirected me to her. But she said Marina was much better than Rodeny. When I got out of my seat I must say I had the holiday look. I looked just like the Grinch who stole Christmas. Needless to say I will never return to that salon in my life. I don't know why they didn't allow Rodney do my hair but someone else. Last time I checked I wasn't there to help a new hairdresser to gain practice. Thank you, color by tess for ruining my evening and my hair. This is the worst salon I have ever stepped into and I will make sure to redirect my friends just as Color by Tess redirected me to a ""better stylist"". more

The prices are different when you book an appointment or request a stylist, length/thickness of hair, changing hair color, doing full head of color, etc.It is best if you get the quote immediately before getting your hair done, and at the salon with the stylist you want.Even if you get an Estimate from the receptionist, you still must confirm your quote with the stylist.Thank you, we apologize for the way you feel, and hope to see you again more

I really wanted to like this salon. Close to my apartment and staff seemed so nice. The first time I went for a root touch up. A little pricey, but the color was perfect. In making a return appt, they quoted me a price for both the next touch up and a Keratin straightening process.\r \r As I arrived for my second visit, everyone was just as nice as the first time until my hair treatments were completed and now all of a sudden, they would not honor the price that was quoted from before. Do these ""business"" people not know that they have to inform a client ""prior"" to services being rendered if they are changing what they promised? What a sham and now instead of having a regular customer they will now have an empty chair because that is just a dirty practice that will not be tolerated. I will be informing the BBB of New York/Manhattan as well. Liars and cheats do not prosper Color Tess. If I could give negative stars, I would. Go to one of the other hundred salons in the area. more

My first citysearch review, I just had to write about my great experience with Rodney. Every so often I come across someone who is a true artist in their craft, and that is Rodney at Color Tess.\r \r I went in last week upset over a dye job (blonde to brunette) that had gone terribly wrong with someone else. It had turned out muddy and flat. Rodney overheard my predicament and immediately - much like a knight in shining armor - swooped in and reassured me that he could make it better. He used a very gentle solution to strip my hair several times of the dark color. He was so honest and knowledgeable of what can be done and how it would turn out. It ended up still dark but SO much better, with shine and depth and with my previous highlights shining through. I had gone in there miserable, barely recognizing myself in the mirror and he restored me and literally brought the color back to my face.\r \r During my experience with Rodney, I also noticed other people who he worked on and can say that every one who left his chair looked like they stepped out of a magazine, with beautiful, shiny, flowing hair that was cut and styled so well. I highly recommend him - the guy knows hair. more

I have been getting my hair done at Tess Color Hair Salon many times. Whenever I leave the salon I'm very happy. The salon has a friendly atmosphere. The owner, Tess is a wonderful person, always so welcoming and hospitable. The staff is extremely attentive and without attitude - I always feel valued. \r The biggest draw for me are the stylists themselves, one in particular Ginger, who is gentle and caring, but the words that best describe her are confident precision. Her experience and knowledge of hair is evident, she is easy to talk to and most of all I trust her to make me look my best! Whether I go blonder or darker it does not matter because my hair always looks great! My hair color has never looked better and I get compliments everytime!\r If you are looking for a great hair color, hair cut or blowdry I would suggest Tess Color Hair Salon! I was visiting the city for a while. I thought I would be a good opportunity to get a haircut. So I was looking for a good salon. I found Color Tess Salon. I called to make the appointment. They scheduled my appointment with Antonio. From the moment I walked in the door I felt comfortable and at home. Everyone in the salon was friendly, warm and welcoming. \r Antonio gave me consultation. He listened very carefuly. Consequently he gave me a great haircut. I visited Tess Color Hair Salon as a walk in and my initial reaction was that it was - OK. It was not the cleanest looking place but the price that they quoted me was in the ballpark of what I wanted to pay. I sat down, asked again for the price (my stylist quoted me the same that the receptionist did) so I proceeded to get color done. While sitting with the foils in my hair, I was moved about 5 times asked to sit in different places while the stylist worked on a bunch of other clients (she was way overworked). She never even looked at my hair to see how the color was processing. After a while, it seemed as if she spotted me still sitting there with foils in my head (the stylist had definitely forgotten about me) and pointed toward the sinks crowded with people. So, I walked over to the sinks as awkwardly got someones attention to rinse my hair. I then was told to wait another 20 minutes in the chair by the sink while my ""stylist"" finished her most current client. Finally I got to see my hair in the mirror as it looked as if nothing had been done except a 2 hour shampoo. My hair was the EXACT same as when I walked in. I politely mentioned to the stylist that it looked the same, not much different at all and she was actually being very nice back to me (as if she agreed and was confused why it looked so similar). Then Tess (the owner) came over and asked what the issue was. I politely told her that i was just saying that my hair looked untouched - at which point Tess starts screaming that I's ""sooo much blonder and it absolutely looks differently."" She went as far as to tell me that I was treating her terribly - woa...my voice was not raised at all and I was being beyond polite. I then just wanted to get out of there, my head half wet and all. I went to pay and she said that will be...and threw out a number $50 more than I had been quoted. I politely asked why and she said ""because we used a gloss"" - I never asked for any gloss! I work in hospitality and I understand how to treat people - this was the absolute WORST experience dealing with clients that I have ever seen and from the owner of all people. Do not go here. I don't agree with review below. Every time I visit Color tess I am always greeted with a smile and always accommodated. Tess is the nicest salon owner! I do my high lights and color here along with weekly blowdrys and have never had a bad experience! I recommend anyone in the neighborhood to give this place a try. Rita is a top notch colorist though everyone there is so professional that I can trust anyone to make my hair look pretty and sleek. I just got off the phone with the owner of the salon and I am shocked at how not intune she is to her customers or customer service. I have been going to Color Tess for my cut and color with RIta and I could not be happier with her work- infact so much so that I have refered 5 people. \r I have in the past gotten the Brazilian Kertain treatment done at a different salon. last week I went to Color Tess for that and Laura did a fabulous job. However the rest of the experience was so appauling!\r \r I had a 3pm appoint on a Friday. I walked in and it seamed no one was aware of my appointment. Laura was able to do it regardless which I appreciated. However after the 3 hour treatment, I was told by the receptionist that I really wasn't supposed to come in on a Friday and the only reason I was ""lucky enough"" that they let me stay was because they weren't as busy as usual. This annoyed me slightly but let it go. Then on Sunday I got a call telling me that I was late for my appointment at 3pm. So clearly someone at the salon had screwed up. I still have card with my appointment day and time that was written by the woman who made the appointment for me Friday June 5th 3:00pm.. \r I called Tess (the owner of the salon) to let her know the mistake and just that I was a little put off by the way the receptionist had approached the conversation about Fridays not allowing me to have the Brazilian treament done. \r I will continue to go to Rita for my color only becasue I think she is that good. But I hate to think I am putting money into Tess's pocket because she has no idea how to treat a customer. The people I have refered to that salon wont be bringing their business there anymore unless its for Rita.... I hope Rita goes to a different salon soon! \r In this economy they are lucky for every customer, but someone should train that owner in cusomter care.... I discovered this salon several years ago when I needed color correction and they were wonderful. I have always had a great experience at this salon. Rita is the professional I've been using and not only is she extremely talented and devoted, she is also a lovely, charming and supremely focused person. I can't recommend this salon enough. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and there is consistently sincere and caring attitude displayed by all who work there! more

I used to went to very expensive salons like Frederick Fekkai or Oscar Blandi. My friend recommended Rita. She goes to her for over 5 years. Her hair always look healthy and has beautiful color. I had cut my budget so I tried Rita. I tell you the true Rita is very good and the salon looks very upskill and beautiful. Staff is professional and my highlighlts and color look better than ever: very healthy, shiny as I expected. Thank you, see you again. more

I have been going to Color Tess for over two years and my colorist and stylist is Gloria. I have received more compliments about Gloria's work than I have about any of my previous stylists. Gloria uses color and highlights that are just right for my skin tone; and her styling makes me look and feel younger. All my friends consistently compliment me on the color and the style. Gloria uses very good judgment is deciding what looks good. She is also very flexible and receptive to comments and requests. I recommend Gloria very highly; you are in good hands with her. Color Tess Salon is fantastic. I starting going there while I was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Tess found the perfect shade of strawberry blonde and I was thrilled. Since then, I have seen almost everyone in the salon for my weekly blowout. Everyone is professional and fabulous, but my very favorite is Marina! Marina has a great, warm personality. She is the best at full service whether it is color, cut or even shampoo. Basically, I get compliments every single day on my hair. It is healthy and an incredible shade of red. Red is really hard to do well, so maybe that is why Marina is so good at it. Redheads rule! Visit Tess Color salon for a a fabulous cut or color. more
