Tomoko's sense of style is excellent. She really made my less than stellar head of hair actually look good. Immediately following my hair cut everybody I work with complimented me on it. Until I got my hair cut by her, I never knew the difference between a good hair cut and an absolutely excellent one. more

I have been a victim of poor haircuts my whole life. I would always tell the stylist, please not to short in the back because it will stick up for a week unless I use mud to keep it down. I also let them know about the other problems. Finally, I found Nao at Tomoko Shimas Hair Salon and she gave me a fantastic cut. I have been using her for 6 months now and can't say enough. My hair has never behaved better. The price is right and the service is GREAT!!!!! more

In a nutshell: I received the worst hair cut ever. After reading all of the great reviews, I decided to give this place a shot since I am new to the UES. My appointment was with Nao, and I was the only client in the salon. When she asked what I wanted, I was very specific and did not ask for anything difficult. I basically have very long, straight hair (which went half-way down my back) and I simply wanted some long layers put in--all layers were to be past my shoulders. Simple enough, right? Wrong. Nao gave me choppy, uneven layers, and a mullet (short in the front and sides, long in the back.) Apparently she does not understand the meaning of 'nothing shorter than my shoulders', as nearly have of my hair was chopped off above my shoulders, and many uneven layers were as short as my jaw line. So, if you are a fan of mullets, uneven layers, and walking out with something that is hard to manage, unflattering, and completely the opposite of what you asked for, this place is for you. Otherwise, spend your hard-earned dollars somewhere else where they will actually listen to you (this place is not cheap), or screw up your hair at your own home for free (you surely will not do a worse job than Nao...) I found Tomoko Shima Hair Salon after stopping two different woman on the street to ask them where did they get their hair done, they both had beautiful hair cuts. I went there to a consultation with Nao and was so impress by her professionalism and knowledge that I put my hair in her hands....and I am grateful I did...this is by far the most detailed and beautiful hair cut I ever had, she spent 1 1/2 hours with me and that is without the color, which we did two days after, and again what talent she has!!!. She cut my hair to meet my taste and also my facial features, she has a very unique talent with the scissor (which by the way are amazing, imported from Japan and custom made for her). I have had so many different hair cuts, hair colors, etc in my life, in different countries, cities, bu t this one is the first time where the hair stylist matched my needs with what would look good on me, and extremely creative at the same time. Nao is my stylist. I found her almost by accident after needing a new salon nearby. She is an artist, she only lets me out of the salon looking super fabulous. She has amazing attention to detail, understands both Japanese and western hair types, and above all is creative. She has amazing cutting skills that so many other stylist lack. She has imagination and an eye for what will work for you. Book with either stylist and you will never leave disappointed. Pros: Personal Service, best haircuts, good price more

Nao is an amazing hairstylist. I showed her a photo of the cut I wanted and it looked like the photo!! She knows how to look at your face and hair texture and tell you if she can achieve that look for you. If not, she give you the closest version. A few months ago I got a terrible hair cut at another salon. It was awful, porbably the worst hair cut of my life and with short hair its hard to hide! After a few months of growing it out I really needed someone to pay attention to what I wanted and simply even out my hair! I found Tomoko salon on citysearch and felt daring enough to give it a try. All the reviews were great so why not?! Tomoko did a GREAT JOB! She was so wonderful and really looked at my hair and listened to what had happened and what I wanted it to look like. I also brought a picture of what I wanted and she payed attention to that and I absolutely LOVE MY HAIR NOW!!! She did such a great job, I'm so pleased with it and will definitely be back!! It was better! I wanted to try something completely different and have a hairstyle with long in the front and short in the back with a turquoise hair color(I provided my own color). I chose Nao Suzuki from all those other great reviews of her. When she realized what I wanted, she talked with me and drew a quick picture to make it more stylish to fit better. At first, I was hesitant but I thought on it and it looked similar to what I wanted but improved so I accepted that idea. She bleached and colored my hair first. The color didn't come out exactly the way I wanted it to be but I can't blame it on the stylist because it was out of her control. Bleached blonde hair+Blue=green. She offered to dye it deeper but I refused. Not her fault but it turned to be a nice ocean color so it was alright with me. Nao did mainly everything by herself including shampooing my hair. When she shampooed my hair off of the color I gave her, the color went on her hands. I felt bad but she didn't comment about it or show worry about it at all. She was just as friendly as before, smiled and ushered me back to my chair. Then, began the cutting of my hair. Watching her, you know she's so focused and knows how to work fast but she asks if you're doing alright and such from time to time to make sure you're okay with her work so far. I had no complaints. She kept snipping away at my hair. My boyfriend was sitting in the chair behind me. Not even half of the way cutting the back of my hair, he said it looked amazing. I was getting anxious and let her keep on doing the work. After everything was done, it really did look amazing. She made my accident color work so wonderfully with the cut. I never had short hair because I was scared of how I would look with it but Nao's hairstyle she gave me was much better than I expected and wanted. She took pictures of my hairstyle at the end. If this is her first time doing a style out of the normal color and cuts, she did wonderfully. Truly a professional. more

I finally find a hair salon in NYC after 5 years that I would like to come back to and would like to recommend to my friends! Nao Suzuki is an excellent stylist in terms of her tecknique and service. She is really professional at what she does yet very friendly that she creates the atomosphere that you can take as much time you need to request and ask for advise in details about your hair. The great thing is she will visualize the hair style of what you wanted or even better than what you imagined it would be. Until I experienced the haircut at this salon, I only used to go to the same hair salon in Tokyo when I travel back. Now, I can have a haircut anytime I want to! more
