Best

Haven't been to the Anchor in six months, and truth be told, when I go out in Manhattan nowadays, I really am not expecting much. After much debate, I made my triumphant return ...

Worst

I went here for a birthday party Saturday night. It was fun at first with ok music but then suddenly the place became so packed that no one could move. It was more than just annoy...

best hot dance den in nyc; killer music 7/15/2008

this place is strange; you walk by it and it appears to be nothing; however, once you walk through that graffitti plagued front door- BOOM! my girlfriend had her party here last weekend that included many friends from work and out of town. the music was killer, the energy in the place DOPE and the people good looking(sorry babe.) the staff did great at getting our group in; the real kicker was seeing LIL Wayne, tough to recognize, no body guards and no one made a big deal. great time to be had by all; will be back soon! prices reasonable and service good; considering being busy. Pros: great crowd, lotsa fun; great mix of music Cons: none more

Wow!!! 7/15/2008

We booked a birthday party here last Friday after hearing great things about this place, and it did not disappoint! All my guests were given preferred entry, there was no cover, and DJ Sizzahandz was spinning! Totally one of the best birthday parties and my friend was super-happy! Thanks Anchor! We will definitely be back here sometime soon, and I will recommend this place to everyone. Pros: Music, decor, neighborhood, crowd, easy reservations Cons: none that I can think of more

Amazing Place to have a Party 7/6/2008

I can't thank you guys enough for making my birthday one of the best nights ever! I do a lot of events all over the city, and this has been one of the best experiences I have had at every step of the way- from the initial email to the actual party. Emails with a TON of questions were answered promptly and professionally and all of the planning and logistics were handled perfectly by Jason with attention given to every detail no matter how big or small. I can't recommend this place enough for a fun party with all the perks of a club and the friendliness of a neighborhood bar. I will be back again very soon!!!! Pros: Staff, easy party planning, music, decor Cons: None!!! more

Great Music 7/6/2008

Came here last Friday and was blown away by the music- The DJ played a bit of everything including classics and current stuff, and all of it kept the crowd moving. The dancefloor was packed, but it was a hot crowd, so I didn't mind getting sweaty with them! I look forward to coming back here again soon! Pros: Music, crowd, good drinks Cons: a bit crowded at peak time more

great atmosphere 6/25/2008

was up on vacation from florida and found this bar on citysearch. my wife and I had a little trouble finding with our cab driver but it was worth it. Good drinks, nice people, great environment to people watch. saw one bad review from another patron. (couldn't disagree more) no cover, no rude doormen, experienced nothing bad. the only problem I had was a couple waits for the restroom. (what popular bar or club doesn't have this) check this place out, good times! more

Great place to dance with the girls. 5/22/2008

Great place to dance with the girls. Single Bathroom is a pain, but you can run out and down to the Bar on the corner and make it back before the line even moves an inch. Downfall- NO GUYS ladies so if you are looking for some eye candy, look elsewhere. Lots of drunken giggly girls. more

Best Birthday Ever! 4/2/2008

First of all my friend told me I should have my birthday party here and i was reluctant because i've never to Anchor before...let me just say it was the best reccomendation i've had in years! This place had a great atmosphere and the staff were friendly and took care of party all night! The only thing I can say is that the place gets packed and I would definately make a reservation and get there early...Around 12:30 there was a line around the block to get in! All that shows is how much fun it is to be inside! more

Great Scene, Good Music, But CROWDED! 2/19/2008

Finally made it to Anchor on Saturday night for a friend's birthday. I arrived fairly late around 1am, and apparently I had missed "the madness" that was an obscene amount of crowding just before I got there. Unfortunately, I couldn't see how that was possible since I could still barely move... how could it have been MORE crowded than when I was there? I don't know, but apparently it took my friend 5 minutes to move from the bar to the back area. Still, Anchor is a worthwhile place because the music was good and the crowd was good-looking. Lots of really attractive women there for sure... and many were dancing. One drawback is the bathroom situation -- only 1 for men and 1 for women, both of which were completely nasty by 1am when I was there, and bathroom lines were of course a problem. I had no problems at the door, but I did hear that there was a line earlier in the evening during the super-crowded time -- that would have really p*ssed me off. Can't comment on the drinks since I just ordered bottled beer that night, but the bartenders seemed fairly friendly and weren't giving anyone a hard time. Seating in the front area and in the back area near the dancing was a good feature for those of us hoping to lay low and save our dancing shoes for another night. Coat check was a reasonable $3 ordeal, and I paid... this won't be an issue during the warmer months though. All of this translates into a 3-star experience for me... not quite 4 stars. I wouldn't avoid going back, but I would try to avoid the mega-crowd that inevitably forms here, and I'd try to avoid the bathroom situation if possible. But, in the end we had a fun time and everyone there for my friend's birthday seemed to have a great night. Pros: Great Scene, Good Looking People, Dancing, Not Pretentious, No Door Problems Cons: Very Crowded At Times, Nasty Bathrooms more

Crowded but fun 1/6/2008

This place gets crowded! But it isn't so bad when the crowd is good looking women. I love this place! more

Cool Place- very suprising! 1/6/2008

I don't understand all the bad reviews- someone must have had a bad night because this place was cool as hell- it was recommended by several friends so we gave it a try last Friday and it did not disappoint. The music was great (mix of 80's, rock, hip-hop, etc.) and the bartenders and crowd were good looking. There was no line for the coatcheck but the bathroom line was ridiculous so we pee'd at the irish bar next door. The manager let us have a table without buying a bottle or anything, so that made up for it! We will definitely be back here. Pros: Music, cool staff, good looking crowd, cool neighborhood Cons: long lines for the bathrooms, small room more

Great Spot! 1/6/2008

We heard about this place from a friend who did a birthday here and said it was cool, but we really weren't prepared for what we found. People were going nuts and the music was GREAT. The Dj was mixing everything, and almost the entire place was dancing, even right inside the front door. Great looking crowd and staff, drinks on the expensive side, but not as bad as usual club prices. The bartenders were friendly and efficient. It got a little crowded at around 1:00 am, but it was a fun crowd, not the usual club crowd. I will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone! Pros: Crowded, bathrooms Cons: good looking crowd, stiff drinks, great music!!!! more

Don't go to The Anchor 1/3/2008

I went to the Anchor for a New Year's Eve party and it was horrible. We paid $75 for tickets, weren't allowed to sit down, weren't served food (as promised on the ticket), and had to endure the rude bartenders all night. Not to mention their alcohol selection was minimal at best, and virtually every other person I talked to that night couldn't stop complaining about what an awful place it was. My suggestion: go anywhere but The Anchor. Go to a diner that serves beer if you have to. Stay home. But don't go here. Not only did they outright lie to us about what we were getting for our money, they then acted like jerks about it. Don't go here! Pros: None Cons: Poor service, minimal selection, rude employees more

cool place until it becomes DANGEROUSLY overcrowded 12/9/2007

I went here for a birthday party Saturday night. It was fun at first with ok music but then suddenly the place became so packed that no one could move. It was more than just annoying... it was scary. Some people fell and were literally being stepped on. There was no where to go. It was fairly ridiculous because they have bouncers outside with a list and velvet rope... they could easily control the number of people in the bar You should also know that if you want to run a tab it is a $40 minimum and there aren't any ATMs in the bar. Furthermore, there is no coat check but it is unsafe to put your coat down anywhere. A couple of people from our party lost their coats even though we were right by the pile of coats all night. Pros: could be intimate Cons: way too crowded, high credit card minimum, ran out of some liquors durring the course of the night more

Get Your Mind Blown! 10/10/2007

Only for REAL dirtbags! Not for the faint hearted... You may have Mischa Barton yak chunks on your new Dunks. If that sounds like a good time then this may be the place for you! You might have to wait 10 minutes for the bathroom but you'll probably meet a group of drunk college girls that want to take you home with them while you do the wee wee dance!! Pros: wild & dirty Cons: wild & dirty more

Good hangout - but bad for planning 10/9/2007

Like the atmosphere, good music playing all night. Decided to have my birthday party there, which was my mistake. They were very unaccommodating, even though I had been in close contact with them weeks before trying to plan ahead. I told them we had a very large group, and they told me numerous times that it was okay, that we would have an area reserved for me, that we would have no problems at the door. I understand that some places have a waiting in line policy or strict reservation accommodations - but at least be upfront and honest about it. Needless to say, we went to Emerald Pub next door where we had the whole bar to ourselves. Pros: Good music Cons: Bad for large groups/reservations more

Anchor Bar if you know how to live! 9/9/2007

september 8,2007 GREAT HOT SPOT!!!! From the time we meet the staff at the front door the place is happening! Great people, good looking friendly staff and an owner who may be older then his crowd, but nothing more then perfectly accomidating. Book a party its so worth it.The music is great! If your not ready to have fun stay home. We love the tables in the back you could cozy it up a bit. Time for a fresh look. The owner treats his staff with respect and Bobby the bouncer is awesome. The bar is a quick serve so he keeps his staff moving. Not alot of waiting time for a drink considering the place is rockin! Gunny who's the hot blonde with the great smile I saw you with at the end of the bar? If your not gonna keep her can I? Johnny P Pros: Awesome experience for those who know how to have fun! Cons: Bathrooms, needs a face lift, ad a little sparkle to the lounge more

Nice small spot, pretty good music and atmosphere 8/23/2007

This place has some great advantages and some small disadvantages, it is free to get in, very nice good looking bartender girls that aren't stuck up and treated me nice, the place has good music and decent prices for a free nyc bar, the bad parts are that it is very small, I have had more people at my house parties, but the people that show up are good looking, the other bad thing is that the bathrooms are not taken care of and old, other than that, nice place to spend a good weekend, and meet some chill people. Pros: Free entrance, good music, prices not too bad, hot bartenders Cons: Very small place, gets crowded because of size, nasty bathrooms more

Q-Tip 8/18/2007

Amazing- no hassle- great drinks- and we walked into a party where Q-Tip was spinning followed by Dj Premeire. I know people that work here- so it may be a little biasedp but this place is the f--kin' spot! Pros: awesome f--kin' staff and music Cons: corny people who stubled into REAL NY- go back to conneticut scumbags! more

Horn decorations on the lights don't make up for rude servers 7/24/2007

the bartender her was SUPER rude, ignoring us all night long, talking nastily to us and actually at one point flipped her hand at me and snapped "calm down" when i was trying to explain i was paying for half the drinks and my friend was paying for the other half. Besides this the bar was too expensive for what its worth and we were unable to move it was so crowded. we ended up going to the dive bar next store and having a way better time. more

Finally A Nice Surprise 6/25/2007

Stumbled on this spots by sheer accident. We were actually looking to wind down at the bar next door untill that door opened while we walk past and caught a peek at the wildness going on inside. Getting to the bar was a challenge the spot was rammed but the vibe was cool, bartenders are smokin and quite friendly and who ever they had behind that dj booth was AMAZING. Excellent Staff. Fun Crowd A good combination all together. The Anchor, thats our Saturdays for this summer! Pros: Great Staff. Hot Bartender Talent and AMAZING MUSIC! Cons: get ready to get smushed @ 1am this place gets packed! more

Editorial
  • In Short
What's in a name? The Anchor's nautical theme gets flexed with stretches of American eagle wallpaper and rope-wrapped poles, while the wood veneer and antler chandeliers suggest a woodsy neighborhood hangout. The bar's true identity, however, is amplified by DJs in the back who spin deafening rap, rock and '80s tunes while the jukebox sits silent. Likewise, the bartenders sling vodka tonics instead of draughts of PBR to buttoned-up young men, dolled-up young women and a handful of hipsters who haven't decamped to Williamsburg, yet.
