Best

Haven't been to the Anchor in six months, and truth be told, when I go out in Manhattan nowadays, I really am not expecting much. After much debate, I made my triumphant return ...

Worst

I went here for a birthday party Saturday night. It was fun at first with ok music but then suddenly the place became so packed that no one could move. It was more than just annoy...

Great Happy Hour Party 10/4/2009

Anchor has become our happy hour spot for working functions. It is a chill little spot that always has good music and of course the work paid for open bar does not hurt. We were there for our fourth party last week and everyone had a great time. DJ was spinning great tunes, it was not too too crowded, bartenders were pouring pretty heavy...absolutely a great place for meeting friends and throwing back a few. I am sure that we will be there for round number five. Pros: fun times! more

Awesome Bar 10/2/2009

I love the open bar package on Thursdays from 7-9. They played great music and it was a fun scene. Pros: Great scene & music Cons: non more

Out to take your money 9/27/2009

I went here on a Sat night for a friend's birthday and this place was dark and crowded. The bar staff was rude and failed to explain the limit for using a credit card was a stiff $40.00! I ordered 1 beer and they refused to give me my card without charging me the amount. I attempted to dispute the charge and dealt with the GM, however, he put me off for 2 weeks claiming to be working on it, but never gave me a resolution. Most spots in the city charge $20 minimum and they are actually worth it. This place is a dumb and the bathrooms are gross. BEWARE of the charge because they won't tell you and there are no signs!!! Pros: none Cons: Rude bar staff; $40 minimum more

Pre-Fashion week madness! 9/9/2009

I came here for a pre-fashion week party for General Idea, having only heard tales of legendary debauchery that supposedly take place beneath the antler chandeliers and nautical stripes. I wasn't disappointed. The music was simply amazing, and the crowd was great- the ladies were all rocking chanel and balenciaga purses and I was amazed at the shoes (LV, YSL, Ferragamo) that were being soaked in tequila as the DJ had his way with us (on the dancefloor of course, although he was oozing sexuality) The staff was cool, and although this was a private event, I will totally check this place when they are normally open. Anchor rocks. Pros: Great decor, beautiful crowd, tequila!!! Cons: I don't live nearby more

mix & stir = perfection 7/30/2009

great drinks, amazing DJ, nice looking and nice crowd, mix it all up = perfection! i met some friends there for what we thought would be a few drinks before moving on. we never left until 4am. this seems to be the experience here. if u REALLY want fun, pure fun, this is the place! Pros: great music; fun people; happy crowd Cons: none more

WOW! 7/2/2009

I went to this bar last Thursday with some co-workers (we work at Viacom on Varrick) after being told of a mythical 2-hour open bar that starts at 7- well, suffice to say, it was no myth- we drank for free until 9, expecting to skip out after- UNTIL, the sickest DJs came on and all of a sudden the place was packed with a very good looking crowd- we stayed unitl around 1, gathering our stuff to leave when who walks in? Rashida Jones (from my favorite tv show, the office) and Kid Cudi!!! Kid Cudi sang some of his song Day and Night, which was cool- and I ended up staying and dancing until 4 and missing work, which wasn't cool. These guys throw a party! Pros: Best Bar Ever Cons: I don't live upstairs more

BEST PLACE FOR A PARTY IN NYC PERIOD 6/10/2009

First off, I never write reviews online, but I felt I owed it to these guys after making the party I threw for my boyfriend a SPECTACULAR SUCCESS!!! I read several good reviews and figured I'd give them a try, and I was not disappointed- from the minute I arrived i was greeted by a funny (and hot) doorman, who immediately ushered us inside and sat us at a table on the dancefloor by the DJ- they didn't even try and force a minimum tab or bottles on us! The music was wonderful- they played a little bit of everything in a styloe that kept us dancing way past 3am. I HIGHLY recommend this place and will be back every weekend for the rest of my life! keep up the great work Anchor! Pros: great staff, great drinks, GREAT music, FUN!!! Cons: gets crowded late nite on Saturday, lines for bathroom more

Nice Place 4/30/2009

I came here for a birthday on Saturday and was really pleased. Finally a place that is more about fun and music than ropes and clipboards. The staff was cool and the hot bartender hooked it up all night. Before I left, I had booked my own party here and will be back every weekend- its nice to find a place that doesn't take itself too seriously while booking great DJs and remaining packed with a great crowd- see you guys soon! Pros: Great drinks, great music, cool crowd Cons: got too drunk and ended up in brooklyn more

Really cool Friday night 4/13/2009

I was attending a friends birthday, and being that she usually hangs at the average meatpacking/west chelsea types of clubs, i was expecting either the usual generic club or some pseudo-speakeasy downtown, but i ended up being quite suprised, to say the least. The outside is unremarkable, but once getting past the friendly and funny doormen, the awesome decor and music blew me away. Once the crowd started rolling in, the night got even better- mostly girls, 80% of them smoking hot, and just a really cool vibe throughout- people came here to party and have a good time. The drinks were strong and moderately priced, the party went straight until 4am, and, as i've said, the quality of the DJ was a complete suprise. i will be back for sure, this is my new Friday hang-out. Totally refreshing after going to the same old clubs with the same old story. Anchor is my new spot, and i totally recommend it! Pros: Friendly staff, easy reservations, sick DJs Cons: off the beaten path a little, gets busy late more

saturday AMAZING! 3/15/2009

i dropped by this spot for recession thursday two weeks ago and was surprised at how cool it was. great music; great deal and the staff was cool; great for after work happy hour scene; not too crowded. checking it out on a saturday; AMAZING!!! the place is very different . packed with good looking crowd and killer dj. my friends and i loved the vibe and will surely return. thanks Anchor; saturday-AMAZING! Pros: great party; accommodating staff Cons: none more

Nice Friday Spot 3/5/2009

I had heard about this place from friends who did a birthday here, and it didn't disappoint! We came last Friday and the friendly doormen immediately let us in and offered us an area near the bar to have drinks. Although we intended to stay for only an hour or so, we ended up staying and dancing until the lights came on because the music and crowd were outrageous! I will be back for sure, and next year I am totally doing my birthday here. Thanks for a great time! more

super cool place 2/9/2009

having heard great things about this place, my roomates boyfriend decided to have a little soiree here saturday nite. the vibe is very cool; music incredible; and just a very hospitable staff. we showed up with about 25 guest; proceeded to the dance floor and drank like sailors. josh was cool enough to find us a table; no bottle hustle; but the party was so great; we purchased a bottle anyway. girls get the word out; this is where you want to be; good looking, fun, hip crowd. great party. thanks for a tremendously fun filled evening. Pros: good music, great party in a relaxed way Cons: bathroom; but worth the wait more

Great Music, Great Atmosphere, Coolest Staff in NYC 2/2/2009

We arrived pretty late this past saturday(after 12) and even though it seemed a little hectic outside, the door staff was totally accommodating and even got us a table without trying to hustle us into buying bottles. We only planned on stopping by, but ended up staying until well after 3 because of 3 reasons: 1) The music here is outstanding. Some of it was generic, but it kept the party going and you could dance to almost every song, which had the obligitory new hip-hop, but was mixed with plenty of classics and great tunes. 2) the drinks were strong and it didn't take long to get served by the friendly bar staff who work at a feverish pace. I commend them! 3) the crowd was just amazing. People were dancing, strangers were handing me shots, and girls were dancing on the banquets and tables. It had the feel of the way New York used to be- real parties- no bottle BS and corny crowd, and everyone was having a good time. I can't wait to come back here, and I will be telling all my friends about it for sure! Pros: great DJ, strong drinks, friendly and accommodating staff, cool crowd Cons: long bathroom lines, gets pretty busy on the weekend (expected) more

Great spot! Will be revisited by us! 1/30/2009

Four friends & I (mixed boys and girls) went to The Anchor last Saturday night, with no reservation and having arrived at 11.30pm, we were initially turned away by the bouncer as it was "guest list" only. Then the promotor came out, and said it wasn't an issue and allowed us in. No cover, great music, excellent anter chandeliers! Cool spot. It fills up very quickly but somehow, everyone manages to find a spot and have a good time. Will deffo refer more business The Anchor's way! Pros: Great music, great crowd. Cons: Only 2 bathrooms in the whole place! more

biggest sleeper in nyc 1/29/2009

yo, i went to recession thursday after work today; i mean, is this a joke? without a doubt, the best afterwork happy hour deal in the city. it didn't hurt to see Kirsten dunst in the spot; either. good music; stupid liquor situation in one of the best spots in the city. thanks anchor for making me look good in front of my boss. all the love- T Pros: best after work deal in town Cons: none; more

doing things right 1/26/2009

my girlfriend's boss dragged us down to this spot this past friday night. once i was inside i was kind of shocked; hot music; hot looking crowd and without question the best party i been to in quite some time. fun place, fun staff and, by the looks of the crowd, they seems to be doing things right and should think about expanding . one of the few places that you will find regular folk chilling with celebs in the same room. thanks for a great time! Pros: hot people, smokin music Cons: none more

Very Cool Spot 1/18/2009

Checked out this place on Saturday after a friend recommended it. I made a reservation through their website that seemed almost too easy, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Got there around 11:00 and walked in to a crazy party! The music was great and the staff was very accommodating in getting us a table quickly and effortlessly despite the madness of the place. The music was great all night and the crowd was cool. Place thinned out a little at 3:00, and we ended up closing the place. I would totally recommend this place, but also recommend making a reservation in advance for a friday or saturday, its a pretty popular place and not that big. Pros: Music, staff, decor, lively crowd, strong drinks Cons: gets pretty packed on weekend, long bathroom line more

after hearing much about this place i finally made plans to check it out. living uptown its a bit of a trip, but, worth every penny in cab fare. incredible, incredible music; the dj looked like Usher; yes, crowded but somehow it all works to be part of this GREAT night out expericence. place is one word; FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN1!! i would advise all you girls to get there Pros: fun crowd; great music, $5 beers Cons: none more

fantastic manager; very acommodating 1/11/2009

i met my girls at this spot friday nite; party started slow, but, after about 1130, wow; amazing music; good looking people. the gm Jason held a spot for us; no hassle, no pressure to spend money. this is , without question, one of the finest spots in nyc. all about fun and having a great time. thanks Jason for all your hospitality; i will refer all my peeps to your spot. great things are going down on spring street. Pros: great hospitality; easy to work with. killer music, HOT crowd Cons: none more

Editorial
  • In Short
What's in a name? The Anchor's nautical theme gets flexed with stretches of American eagle wallpaper and rope-wrapped poles, while the wood veneer and antler chandeliers suggest a woodsy neighborhood hangout. The bar's true identity, however, is amplified by DJs in the back who spin deafening rap, rock and '80s tunes while the jukebox sits silent. Likewise, the bartenders sling vodka tonics instead of draughts of PBR to buttoned-up young men, dolled-up young women and a handful of hipsters who haven't decamped to Williamsburg, yet.
