Creepy, inappropriate male massage therapist. 1/16/2011

What a shame to have to trash this place on line because I had a lovely massage with Tamara, and my two friends and I really enjoyed our platza session with Doryan. However, last night after her first massage with a male massage therapist, one of the two (female) friends I went with received two text messages from someone she didn't know saying how much he'd enjoyed "meeting" her and how much he wanted to see her again. When she texted to ask who he was, he said he was her massage therapist from Okeanos. She was and is completely freaked out, not having had any sense that her therapist was looking to get a date from her as he gave her massage, having given no one at Okeanos permission to give out her cell phone number, and knowing that this totally inappropriate stranger had access to her home address. My other friend and I spent the better part of the evening trying to make her feel safe and not physically violated and assuring her that we'd take action. Have notified Groupon, contacted the spa (haven't heard back yet) Needless to say, all of the relaxation we all felt after our time at Okeanos went down the drain, and our friend -- a very competent, confident, strong woman -- is really knocked sideways by this. Please do not give this place your business in the future. more

great place, friendly service 1/16/2011

a little weary as it was under ground level but felt instantly relieved when i entered the spa...friendly service--i think mostly russians/eastern european...had a male massage (last-min appt so no females were available) and he was GREAT...i was skeptical b/c i've never had a male working on me, but he proved to be better than most female masseuses i've had...applied pressure on my shoulder and upper back where i told him i was most tense....anyway, will go back and ask for him specifically though i'm sure others there are great as well...i think his name is Tiber, or Tiger...anyway, great spa, great sauna--the guy who manages the spa is really helpful as well--made sure everyone was comfortable in the sauna, that it wasn't too hot, etc. etc....so in short, highly recommend. more

Great massages, very relaxing 4/2/2010

Really loved this spa. Took my boyfriend and we enjoyed the relaxing sauna. We had our massages together at no extra price, and since we both went, it was 30% off! The massages themselves were great - perfect pressure, relaxing. I almost fell asleep it was so good (and that never happens). at the end, they gave us a complimentary shot of vodka. how fun! Highly recommended Pros: fair price, fun Russian vibe, sauna is great Cons: no jacuzzi, not many people more

Amazing Russian Sports Massage 1/28/2009

This place is GREAT. I love getting deep tissue massages and Im willing to pay for it especially if the person knows what they're doing. I've gone twice in the last month and had Ivan work me out both times. This guy was absolutely great, I left the place like someone beat me up (in a good way). He worked out every cramp and kink in my body and really had great technique. The saunas were clean, super HOT and the staff was extremely friendly. It's great if you work in midtown as its open till 10pm most of the week. As other people have said its a bit more expensive then other places but after you get the massage you wont give a damnn about the $$$. Highly recommended and ask for IVAN. Pros: Amazing Massage and Atmosphere Cons: A bit pricey but you pay for perfection more

RETRACTION TO PREVIOUS REVIEW 8/26/2008

8-27 I was finally contacted by one of the owners of the spa regarding my billing error. Seems when you upgrade your package, the computer reverts to ala carte pricing. Unfortunately, the owner was not present when we left the spa and the clerk did not know the procedure for this incident. It did take a while but the owner contacted me directly and apologised for the incident. He was very professional and sincere regarding the matter. We did enjoy the services and would definitely visit the spa again. I say check your bill and ask for the owner if there are any problems. It's a great spa for men and they definitely delivered on their services. more

GREAT SPA FOR MEN 8/15/2008

8-27 - I had a billing error. Unfortunately, the owner was not present when we left the spa. It did take a while, but the owner contacted me directly and apologised for the incident. He was very professional and sincere regarding the matter. We did enjoy the services and would definitely visit the spa again. I say check your bill and ask for the owner if there are any problems. It's a great spa for men and they definitely delivered on their services. My husband loved the facial and massage. Said the steam room was one of the best he ever experienced. Pros: PROFESSIONAL & COURTEOUS OWNER more

DISHONEST OWNERS - BUYER BEWARE! 8/14/2008

I recently went with a friend and we purchased two spa packages from their website. The facialist asked us if we wanted to upgrade for an additional $25 to the premium facial. We did it but when it came time to settle the bill, they refused to honor their pricing and charged us an additional $75 for each of the packages. Then they charged us $6 for juice! I wrote to the management to see if they would give us a credit back but they didn't even care. They cheated us and left a bad taste in our mouths. Bad business practice and I say buyer beware! No matter how good the service, they should be honorable. more

Clean and well delivered! 6/1/2008

Finally there's a real and clean bathhouse in the city. The saunas and massages, although more expensive than competition, are top flight. Limited food menu, but BYOB makes this place golden. Pros: Real Saunas & Massage, Lounge & BYOB Cons: None more

Sauna Heaven !!! 5/27/2008

If you are into saunas/banyas than this place is for you. The place is by far the cleanest and hottest in the city. The massage was good, although on a pricey side for the deep tissue. The staff was courteous and attentive...sometimes a bit too attentive. If you frequent the city spas or bathhouses, I suggest you give this one a try. more

yeahhh, its pretty cool 5/4/2008

Ivan definitely be holdin it down at okeanos!!! His massages are no joke. If you like him, check out G spa at the gansevoort hotel down in the meatpacking district...the guy they got working there now....INTENSE bro. greatest massage of my life, i think his names's michael. just as good...if not better then homeboy!!! Pros: nice place Cons: feels a little like everythings a lil outta wack more

Average! 4/29/2008

It is a average place with average food and average service.I was told so many things about this place but it was not the place that i was expecting more

Great Massages and very Proper Saunas 10/19/2007

I don't normally leave reviews, but my visit is worth it. The staff was professional and attentive. The best part is the saunas and the steam room. They are as authentic as it gets. Keep in mind that this is not your regular bath house. The place is upscale and priced accordingly. The only set back is the bar. I wish they'd serve freshly squeezed juices and offer bigger variety of snacks and appetizers. Pros: Massage Treatments, Russian Saunas, Ambience, Staff Cons: Limited Drink and Snack Selection, No Cold Plunge more

Avoid at all costs! 10/6/2007

I used to frequent this spa quite often, as the employees here were very professional. But on a recent visit, I was disappointed to learn that the place has taken a turn for the worse. The spa was hot (no A/C), dark and smelly, as if someone is keeping a tight watch on the electric bill, and the complementary water was tepid and smelled from chlorine. I was charged $3.00 for a mediocre glass of tea, and the towels I was offered after using the banya were filthy, and looked like they are recycled and folded between guests without washing. To top it off, b*gs were crawling on the dump, moldy floor. It?s a shame that a place with a great potential has gone bad due to an unprofessional management and poor customer service. I?m never going back to this ?spa?. Pros: None Cons: Unprofessional management, poor customer service more

Great message, ammenities and service need some help 8/20/2007

The people here were very friendly and execellent at what they do. I had an awesome message. Why I am willing to pay more for a message at a spa is the extras that usually come with it. This spa, while having opened its doors to women recently, definitly still caters to men. The womens shower room didn't have toothbrush, facial products, or hair products like the men's (my boyfriend and I compared notes). The steam room had a mildew smell in it. And the bar area wasn't tended and I didn't feel like searching someone out. They seemed to put more effort into upselling than to catering. At these prices, I will probably seek out other spas in order to compare--if I can get the awesome message and platza at a spa that delivers better ammenities and service, then I would probably not go back which is hard for me to write as the people were really sweet. more

Great Joint!!! 8/16/2007

Came here with a few co-workers after work. This is by far the most male friendly spa/bathhouse in the city. Although they serve comp vodka shots, BYOB is also allowed. More places like this in NYC, please! more

I Am Definitely Coming Back 7/11/2007

After visiting Okeanos I felt as if I have had a week of vacation. The perfect place to relax and forget about the whole world. A great, sophisticated yet simple atmosphere, professional staff and the BEST TREATMENTS EVER. Highly recommend the banya treatment for those who need to relax or simply try something new and exciting. My facial and massage were out of this world. This is more than I expected and I am definitely coming back. Pros: treatments, atmosphere, food, drinks, complementary alcohol, music Cons: no pool more

One of top Russian Baths in the city 7/11/2007

Think different - Okeanos Spa is not your ordinary banya. No kids running around, no guys swilling down the beer, no ma's with thermoses, no TV's with Russian channels, but just a few people enjoying themselves in a spa with a Russian flavor. Andre Izrailov - a co owner of Okeanos Spa is a pleasure to deal with. And always classy Angela - the spa manager ensures that every client is treated like a celebrity, which can be not far from the truth - some Russian hockey players, ballet dancers and models are regulars there. The spa is geared towards men - from masculine stone and wood decor to the selection of treatments. Men can take care of themselves and still feel like men - they are in banya after all! There is also a cigar room that was probably meant to balance the healing effect of the spa. Okeanos has two (only one is opened at the moment) cozy Russian steam rooms (no shvitz thankfully) and a "Turkish" steam room, but unfortunately no pool or cold plunge. Everything is brand new with a pleasant feel of luxury. The platza master knows his business well (ask for Ruslan on Thursdays - he is outstanding) and the stove is good - making enjoyable, not oppressive steam that doesn't burn, but thoroughly warms your body. The stove is quite small though, so the steam room becomes rather cold and wet when place gets a lot of people like Saturday nights. Okeanos is more a spa than a banya and the owners emphasize that in pricing. It makes more sense to spend $120+ on platza with massage or facial and use the banya facilities with no additional fee, than to pay $90 just for an admission. Okeanos does not serve food, but they do offer tea. And complimentary glass of champagne or a shot of vodka are available with every package. The staff is great - attentive, neat and polite. Check their web site for specials. Right now on Thursdays for just $50 you can enjoy all of the facilities, live Jazz and some great Russian bear. more

A fabulous and unique spa experience 7/10/2007

I recently had two treatments at Okeanos ? an Optimum facial and a Siberian Hot Stone Massage -- and found the staff to more than professional. I felt pampered from the moment I stepped into the beautiful ocean liner-like space. My message therapist went out her way to make me comfortable on the table before she began and went about her work silently allowing me to really relax. Although it was my first visit, I was treated like an old friend and encouraged to relax and enjoy a drink at the bar before, between and after my treatments. I really appreciated the little details, like the Spa Director stopping by to say hello and the gorgeous locker room and showers that called to mind a chic boutique hotel. I'll be back soon! more

This is a Man's World!!! 7/5/2007

An ideal place to getaway from the city chaos without leaving the city. Russian sauna, massage, complimentary vodka and a poker game - all in one place and in one evening. Platza is a must have before any treatment. We found more than we bargained for. Thanks Okeanos!!! Pros: Try it and you'll know. Cons: What cons? more

  • "First Caviar & Vodka, then leggy Slavic Supermodels. Now, the hot Russian import in Manhattan is Okeanos Club Spa. Tucked away on East 51st Street, 'it feels like a swank cruise ship.' --Conde Nast Traveler, 2006

Okeanos brings the best of traditional Russian spa therapies to Manhattan but adds a modern and worldly spin. More than just a spa, Okeanos is a destination where one can de-stress in simple and elegant style. Conceived in the spirit of the Tsars, Okeanos offers Banya, the Russian steam sauna and Platza, the invigorating touch of steam-softened birch leaves on banya-warmed skin (the favorite treatment of the Russian players for the New York Rangers). They also offer massages, facials, body treatments, nails, barber services and a luxurious lounge area with a bar and TVs. Molton Brown & Comfort Zone are among the luxury brands offered in treatments.

Editorial
  • In Short
This masculine spa captures the spirit of Russian bathhouses, where businessmen traditionally did much of their dealing. Encouraged to come with company, clients first unwind in the lounge, which is designed like a sunny cruise ship deck with a vodka- and caviar-packed bar and wavy walls beyond. Masters perform traditional platza treatments (body-brushing with softened birch leaves) in the "banya," or Russian steam sauna. An on-site barber and sports massages round out the kingly offerings.
