STAY AWAY!!! I told the ""stylist"" that I wanted 3 inches cut from my waist length hair. Straight across, no layers. I showed her what I meant by 3 inches. I specified th...

Do they know what they're doing??? 2/21/2011

I went in for a haircut, and was asked if I minded having my hair washed after the cut, instead of before, because the washer was "too busy just now". This really doesn't inspire confidence, and I left without getting a haircut. more

Incompetent, Horrible Don't Go Here 2/23/2009

I went to a stylist named Mambo to have my hair japenese straightened (I have it straightened every year and know exactly how straight and beautiful it should look after the procedure). After Mambo spent 4 hours on the procedure, my hair looked terrible. The next day it was not straight at all, but rather it was as curly as it was before and also now dry and damaged! Mambo said he did not know how to fix it, they were rude, and utterly unwilling to help me. I have had to go to another salon to get it fixed. They were also unwilling to offer me treatments do undue the damage. Do not go to this salon as they are unprofessional and incompetent. more

Awful 1/22/2009

I had a really bad experience at this place. The stylist was inattentive, working on another client at the same time. I was extremely unhappy with the result. more

Don't do it! 9/28/2007

I went to the Third Ave location and it was awful. I stopped in for the special advertised for $19. I have a very simple hair cut and it is hard to mess it up. Well Boris certainly found a way! I went to another salon where they fixed it and they had nothing but bad things to say about Boris. One side was longer than the other and there were stray hairs everywhere. On top of this I think I was over charged. I asked him to blow dry my hair and it went from a $19 haircut to $47! So $28 bucks extra to blow dry my hair, that wasn't styled and wasn't even dry all the way. I seriously doubt that he had a license as every other stylist was looking at him while he was cutting it. State Board should go investigate this place. The shampoo boy wasn't any better. It advertises head message shampoo, what a joke! One positive thing I will say is that the two older male stylist I saw working looked liked they were excellent stylist... this boy needs to go back to beauty school! more

feeling beautiful 7/25/2007

Everytime I walk out of here I feel great about myself. I want to thank Extreme New York for hiring such talented people. I usually get color done and a haircut here and I absolutely love it. The price is fair and the customer service is just great. They are very professional, curteous and friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to go there again! more

Would not go back 7/5/2007

I went to the Broadway location. I walked in for their $18 walk in special since I had heard good reviews. I got talked into highlights and ended up paying $132 (far more than I had planned to spend on my hair). The color is good, but the cut is awful. He severely undercut the front and top layer (what I specifically told him I didn't want). Now I have to find someone to fix it. Also, I found my stylist to be extremely inattentive. While I was there, he got his color done and gave at least two other cuts (amazing since the color only took half an hour). more

Jason 8/25/2006

I just went to Jason at the 3rd Ave location on the previous recommendation and I was not disappointed. Jason took the time to help me articulate just what I wanted and offered suggestions I had never heard before. The result was perfect and dirt cheap. more

Ask for SANDY--She is Fabulous! 8/11/2006

Sandy is terrific at blow drying, color and cut. Several of my friends go to her and all of us have been EXTREMELY happy. My husband said I look younger when she does my hair---a little edgy and always so soft. The blow dry lasts for days. She works on weekends, too! Sat-Wed She is at the West Side location.... Yay!! 4/28/2006

I'm so happy right now! Like these other three, wonderful people who wrote reviews for Extreme New York, I'm always concerned about getting my hair cut at a brand new place for the first time. As such, I thought - well... let me try Judy's book and see what has good ratings. Extreme New York was one of the first ones I found on here, and since it had great reviews and was right by my parent's apartment, I thought - ok, I'll try it. Thankfully, i did; what a great place! The decor is modern (with a quasi-european feel?) and as soon as I got there I was told I could go in back to get my hair washed. Assuming I was just getting a typical hair wash, I was surprised therefore, when the woman started massaging my head in more detail (i.e., ignoring the hair and massaging the temples and my neck)... soon I started to wonder even, whether I'd accidentally agreed to some really expensive head massage... I figured this because at this point she was ignoring my whole head and just massaging my back and then my temples and neck again, and only once in awhile getting back to my hair... (but not even rinsing it... just massaging it). It was a 15 minute process, and by the end I was sure I owed her a gazillion dollars... but it turns out that it was just the way she likes to wash hair, and it was wonderful! (I gave her a great tip afterwards). Next: the haircut. I had Kent do my hair, and immediately I felt at ease. He looked really competant and very 'in charge.'. For anyone who likes a hairdresser who doesn't talk, but concentrates fully on what he or she is doing... (and who is incredibly talented at what he or she does), get Kent! He didn't talk to me at all; just kept chopping away in a very fast paced manner (but in a way that I could also tell he was very skilled)...And, at the end, he finished up by blowdrying my hair in such a great way that my boyfriend complemented me at least five or six times later that night. Highly recommended!!!! (One warning: The whole wash/cut/blowdry cost me $57 with/out tip - not the $25 someone else mentioned) more

Wonderful! 8/23/2005

I first moved to NYC this past January. I dreaded searching for a place and a person that would do a decent job on my hair. So after 4 weeks, I finally just walked into Extreme New York and was randomly assigned to a stylist. Needless to say, no one else has touched my hair since. more

Great stuff!!! 7/26/2005

I only have the best comments about this place. It was recommended to my by a friend, about two years ago and now I keep going there! People are nice, I enjoy my visit, I learn about my hair, get the cut and color for what is more than a decent price in NYC!!! I am scared that it would become too famous and that getting the appointment won't be as easy as before. So, keep the secret! My favorite guy: Evars! more

"Extreme"ly Satisfying Haircut 6/29/2005

I always used to dread going to get my hair cut. I'd let my once well-layered hair grow for weeks until it, in its shagginess, resembled that of a band member from Poison or White Snake -- all to avoid going to the salon. But then I found Extreme New York, on 3rd Ave at 88th Street. On my first visit, I was nervous. Thinking "Extreme New York" was a dumb name for a salon, and wanting my hair to be anything but extreme, I hesitantly made an appointment with Jason. I chose him because he'd recently cut my boyfriend's hair, and my honey had come back (looking no different than before he left; such is the fate of a clean-cut man) raving about Jason. As soon as I sat in Jason's chair, I knew why my boyfriend had raved about him. Jason immediately looked at my hair and began explaining why it was as limp and lifeless as it was (due to my build-up inducing shampoo). After my relaxing hair washing (complimentary head massaging is just another perk of this salon), he began to cut. Unlike other stylists, he didn't gab on and on about his personal life or television or politics; he told me about my hair. He told me a lot about my hair. How to hold the brush as I dried it, for example. The best way to grow it out while still looking hot. The theory behind texturizing hair. Bottom line: this was the most informative haircut I had ever received, and now, two weeks past when I should have had it cut, my hair looks nothing like David Lee Roth's. Plus, it was cheap as hell: $25! more
