VERY SKILLED!! 5/21/2003

I went to this salon last night for the first time and am so happy with the results!! I had both waxing and a hair cut, and cannot complain. The waxing was very professionally done, and CHEAP! The haircut was as expensive as anywhere else in the city, but they actually listen when you tell them how you'd like it done, which is well worth the price! I will go back in the NEAR future! I go to Avalon religiously for waxing. I only use a wonderful woman named Agata. She is so fast, so sweet, and makes you very comfortable! She's like a therapist! I've never used any of the other services, but the prices are great, and i've heard only good things from friends. Between me and my friends, we've gotten about 10 people going to Agata! I've gotten my hair cut by Zak, and he is WONDERFUL!! He actually listens and does a great job. and I LOVED the way Olga waxed, she is patient and precise. It's definitely worth the trip. more

Great Waxing! 3/25/2003

I found Avalon when I moved to the hood about 2 1/2 years ago and I love this place. If you are a waxing fiend like I am, go to Olga. She is the sweetest and most precise person I have met there. The atmosphere is so soothing and there isn't any attitude, at all! So go to Avalon and enjoy! more

Comme si, comme ca 3/19/2003

Being a regular patron of the Blind Tiger and being in need of a hair cut I peformed countless hours of due diligence on local barbers in the vicinity and chose Avalon. When I called for an appointment on the same day, I spoke to a friendly person who eagerly assigned me to a stylist. I arrived early, was greeted politely, but was not offered coffee, tea or water. Big deal. The scene was worth the visit. The haircut is another matter. Nick is capable, but not very talkative. That's OK. It's my first visit. The cut looks great; my girlfriend approves and whether it was worth $45 all in is TBD. Let's see how the hair grows in. That's the true test of an excellent cut. Definitely would go back. Pros: Friendly people, Competitive prices, Flexible scheduling Cons: No half 'n half, No demerra, No chardonnay more

I've only used their massage therapy service, and it is excellent. The therapists (and I've had about 14) range from really good to superior. The styles vary, but each has contributed to my well being greatly. My monthly indulgence is worth every penny. more

LOVE it here! 11/10/2002

I have been a card carrying customer at pierre michel in midtown for three years and was recently pointed in the direction of Avalon. I dont know about the other services, but I will never go back to PM, and will always go back to Avalon to get my color and cut done. Not only is is WAY cheaper, but the people are so friendly, and I actually look forward to getting my hair done. They do a great job. This is a HUGE compliment since I am not your typical lets-spend-a day-at-the-beauty-salon-type-of-girl. I would recommend this place to even the pickiest and hardest to please friends of mine to get their hair done. more

Avalon Rocks 9/9/2002

I have had just about all the spa treatment shere and LOVE them all- Svetlana is the best overall and Irina gives a great facial, once you have gone to these ladies you willnever go to anyone else! I have never been disappointed. Everyone is friendly and welcoming- there is no attitude on the spa side- I can't speak for the hair salon but as a day spa-Avalon rocks. Pros: welcoming, well priced Cons: could use a face lift more

Its nice but... 8/22/2002

While Avalon does have good service and a very nice staff there lurks the stylist that robbed me of my gorgeous hair. The way he described my cut was in NO WAY close to this MESS that I have on my head. Now I'm forced to suffer the next couple of weeks before I go and try to salvage my hair. more

overrated!!!!!!! 8/22/2002

I went to avalon a few weeks ago, inspired by the great reviews posted here..but im more than a little disappointed. Avalon definitely looks nice, and the people there are very polite, but I don't think they know very much about stylish hair. My stylist described a great haircut to me, but then decided to completely do the opposite! He hacked off all my hair, then added some invisible layers and called it quits. My hair looks like someone took a giant garden scissor and chopped it off while I was sleeping! Don't be disillusioned by the look of this place, they may look and sound like they know what they're doing, but when it comes to actually cutting hair, theyre clueless. Avalon is fantastic. It has a small personable feel, but is always on the cutting edge of new trends. The staff is attentive and friendly. And it was a great deal for a hair-cut, higlight and all over color! more

Haven't seen too many reviews from people regarding waxing services here, so I will add that Agata is a sensational aesthetician...she is very disarming and friendly to someone who has never been waxed before and may be nervous. i'm hooked! from head to toe - she's the best for this service. Been a client for almost 2 years now. more

    Welcoming, low-key, attitude-free--Avalon is the Cheers of day spas, a place where locals hang out and chat, little dogs bounce around and, after a couple of visits, everyone probably does know your name. Located on a tree-lined West Village street, the salon is a favorite of clients both gay and straight, male and female, and is truly a space where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.

    The Services
    At street level, Avalon has a sunny haircut and style area, where fun music blares and people are usually singing along; a quieter manicure space; a small, two-seated pedicure alcove; and a couple of tanning rooms with UVA mattresses or UVA and UVB plexiglass beds. Downstairs is a peaceful space for quality massages, facials and waxing. Swedish, shiatsu, aromatherapy, reiki and reflexology massages are offered; note that most of Avalon's massage therapists are male, so if you have a preference, ask.
