Just returned from my first massage at Avalon on Christopher St. The best massage I've ever had. The masseur's name was Jesse. The owner, Russell, runs a clean and attractive b...

I called today to make an appointment for a basic cut & style with Nick, who has previously cut my hair and done a GREAT job. However today I have changed my mind contributing to ...

Don't do it 4/21/2007

Absolutely horrible. Very rude receptionist, unbelievably bad mullet. An arrogant stylist named Mark butchered my hair. more

Expensive and overrated. 4/3/2007

I read all the reviews and got excited to treat myself to a new haircut and color- but it turned out to be a disappointment. I called and was recommended to see a hairdresser named Angel who didn't really do what I asked for (I'm a dark blond and wanted something subtle and natural looking, which he chose not to do or couldn't do). The shampoo lady soaked my shirt in back and didn't really do anything to help. At the end I told Angel I was hoping for something more natural and he told me that he thought I looked great and then showed me off to another hairdresser. He didn't seem very interested in my opinion. Maybe someone else there is a better listener but I won't go back to experiment. Other people mentioned what a great value this place is and I paid the same as the other salons in the neighborhood so I'm not sure what they're talking about. Pros: Well decorated and nice space Cons: Undertrained staff. High prices for haircolors and blow-drys. more

Elizabeth is my waxing Goddess! 3/6/2007

I used to dread going to get waxed and now I look forward to seeing Elizabeth. She keeps you relaxed and is one of the sweetest and most caring people I know. She always has a smile and some good stories to tell. When I've gone on vacation in the past and have had to get waxed by someone else, I've always missed Elizabeth and I now know to plan my waxing schedule around hers. more

GET the PACKAGE! Great deal and I loved every minute... 3/4/2007

I was having a rough week and treated myself to EXPERIENCE AVALON which includes: manicure, Pedicure, 1 Hour Facial, 1 Hour Massage. It was a great price for an all around body and mood boost. I seriously could not decide which part of the experience I liked the most. Manicure/pedicure was the best and least painful I've ever gotten, I SWEAR that after my facial I looked and felt 3 years younger, and finally ended with a GREAT all over massage- he really listened to my needs and gave me a combined deep sports & relaxation massage. I was impressed. Oh yeah, and the way I found out about this EXPERIENCE is that I've been going in to get my hair cut & colored (highlights- shhh!) and have been very happy with the results on that too! As a photographer and in the 'industry' my appearance is very important. Thanks Avalon!! Pros: Great uptown service w/out the uptown price Cons: wished I would have gotten the bigger package ESCAPE more

elizabeth = best wax!! 2/25/2007

I just saw Elizabeth for my brazilian and I will never go to a different woman again. She is so sweet and puts you at ease and teaches you a breathing trick that actually makes it less painful, amazingly enough. She doesn't rush through it and makes sure it looks fantastic. Somehow she made getting a brazilian, which is normally nothing but pain, a totally relaxing spa experience :) more

Great Hairstylist!! 2/19/2007

Philip Joseph has saved my hair!! I was hopping from salon to salon. Having a hard time finding the one. Philip made me feel at ease. He gave me exactly what I asked for!!! more

Great Atmosphere, location and people! 2/13/2007

I've been going to Avalon for all kinds of good stuff (mani, pedi, waxing, haircuts) for several years now and highly recommend the place - very friendly staff, great location, great hours. In particular, if you need anything waxed ask for Elisabeth. (She also does facials, etc.) She is the only person I've met who can take the not always pleasant task of having hair stripped off various bodyparts and turn it into an enjoyable way to pass the time. She does great work, dispenses with excellent knowledge/advice, and is the sunniest person around! more

Elizabeth is Great!! 2/12/2007

I love Avalon for its ambiance, friendly staff and affordable prices. I've been going to Avalon off and on for 4 years, but yesterday I had a great waxing experience with Elizabeth. She was fast and knew what she was doing, making the pain quite minimal. She did great work, and I will def be going back to her. Pros: On time, Affordable, friendly more

Ricky at Avalon is absolutely wonderful 2/11/2007

I have been a client of Ricky's for close to 5 years now, and I have never been disappointed with the work he has done for me. He is always terrifically skilled, up-to-date on current trends but also very good at creating the style you are hoping for. I am very change-averse, and he is always patient and never pressures me when he recommends something different. When I finally decide to try that change, it always looks fantastic. Most importantly, he is honest when you suggest something that he doesn't think would look good on you; I think that is the mark of a true professional. Additionally, Avalon itself is a welcoming, friendly, clean, full-service salon that I would recommend to anyone. I would never consider going anywhere other than to Avalon to work with Ricky. Pros: ambience, Ricky, service Cons: receptionist can be brusk more

Love Avalon!! 1/23/2007

Avalon salon is a fun and friendly . Philip Joseph has some amazing talent with my difficult hair. His thourough consultations are nothing short of honest and professional. Great cut, beautiful color and a blowout that lasted three days!! Love Avalon!! more

friendly atmosphere and good service 1/15/2007

I tried this salon out for the first time and was a little skeptical at first because I hate going to a salon that looks fancy and ending up with a stylist who has no idea what they're doing . The stylist (Angel) gave me exactly the haircut I initially described, and styled it into a retro '50's fashion which looked great. He also gave me some sound advice on what haircolors would best match my complexion and what my options were as far as coloring goes. The receptionist and staff were pretty friendly as everyone else here has said. All in all, I trust him with my hair and I would definitely recommend this place to a friend. Pros: staff is friendly, they offer just about every type of spa service and they're open later than most salons Cons: can be a little pricey if you're going for a cut and color more

Agata gives the quickest Brazillian 1/14/2007

....and totally and entirely bearable. I don't want to say painless because there is no such thing has a painless Brazillian in my eyes but very close to it. I am out in 15 mins tops and dear Agata tells it like it is on life and love. Best 15 min therapy session ever and I'm out feeling fresh up and down there :-) She's also precise and makes it look spiffy. Pros: Agata, very affordable, FAST, skills baby skills Cons: she works tues to Fri only more

Bad hair cut + color 12/27/2006

I live in the west village + after hearing all the good reviews went to Avalon- I got the worst cut + color of my life.i had a full head of highlights, the guy literally streaked my hair, it was terrible. Then he proceeded to razor cut my hair into what can only be described as a mullet! and not a trendy one. DO NOT GO TO AVALON- $300 + tip for a BAD cut and color is a rip off! Pros: great location Cons: cost + bad service more

Deborah saved my hair with Japanese Straightening! 11/8/2006

I've been having my hair Japenese straighted for years and the past two times I've had it done in DC, it was badly damaged. It was dry, brittle and had lots of breakage...looked terrible and I was lucky it didn't fall out! I went to Deborah last week at the Avalon Salon and she saved it! She took the time to give me a protein treatment to strengthen it before we even began the straightening. I was so nervous that I would have further damage, but it looks amazing and feels even better. I've had mine done so many times, but Deborah KNOWS what she's doing! I am so thrilled with the results...I will never go to anyone else for it. more

Didn't get past the receptionist 9/24/2006

I just called to make my first appointment. The receptionist was so rude to me that I didn't even get that far. more

I ADORE Avalon Spa - and Philippe 8/1/2006

This salon is always crazy busy, but the folks there are wonderfully pleasant, and beyond willing to be friendly and accommodating. Felippe is so skilled with my thick, course hair. He intuitively knows the cut "I want" - meaning, he knows the best cut for my hair, and my face shape. My mother always told me that the best hair cut is the one that grows out well (in addition to looking fantastic at the start, naturally), and when I leave Philippe I am always confident that my hair will look great for the next 6 weeks. He recently gave me highlights which are so beautiful that I have strangers on the street complimenting me!!! I love this salon. Pros: Just everyone there is fun & skilled Cons: Can be very crowded sometimes more

Above and Beyond 5/18/2006

I have been getting great cuts for my curly hair from Antonio, a stylist at Avalon. While cutting my hair recently, Antonio noticed a growth on my scalp. It turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma. If he had not alerted me to it, I don't know when or how big it would have been when finally discovered. I am so grateful to one outstanding guy!! more

Tom's the bomb 4/4/2006

A kinder person and stylist you wont find in the whole Manhattan. Tom has been coloring and cutting my hair for years, and i have alway loved his work, and I have sent so many friends there whom have never been happier. He is always smiling and is totally professional and easy. He listens to what YOU want and always has great creative advice-he will do whatever he has to to make you FEEL and LOOK fabulous. LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE CUTE ISRAELI WITH THE GO-T Pros: service, atmosphere, professional Cons: no parking more

Hair by Mark Ritchie 3/23/2006

One of the hair stylists, Mark Ritchie, is probably the best colorist I have ever been to. Everywhere I go, people remark on my color and ask who did it and where. The staff at Avalon are very friendly and efficient - I cant recommend either Ritchie or the salon highly enough. more

Owner Message
  • Tucked away on a quiet stretch of Greenwich Village's historic Christopher Street, sits Avalon Salon and Day Spa, an enchanting oasis of relaxation, comfort, and friendliness. With our expertly skilled staff and neighborhood atmosphere, Avalon is a full-service salon that caters to a clientele as wide ranging as any New York City has to offer.

"I created Avalon as a place where anyone can feel welcome, get pampered, and above all, know they'll be completely taken care of," says proprietor Russell Bloom. His philosophy is rooted in the marriage of a warm, discreet environment, affordable price structure, and a staff of personable, highly-trained specialists. General Manager Okema Pearce adds, "There is a strong sense of family here, amongst both our staff and our clients. First time clients often comment how welcomed they feel and that it seems as if they've known us for years."

Editorial
  • The Scene
Welcoming, low-key, attitude-free--Avalon is the Cheers of day spas, a place where locals hang out and chat, little dogs bounce around and, after a couple of visits, everyone probably does know your name. Located on a tree-lined West Village street, the salon is a favorite of clients both gay and straight, male and female, and is truly a space where everyone feels comfortable and relaxed.

    The Services
At street level, Avalon has a sunny haircut and style area, where fun music blares and people are usually singing along; a quieter manicure space; a small, two-seated pedicure alcove; and a couple of tanning rooms with UVA mattresses or UVA and UVB plexiglass beds. Downstairs is a peaceful space for quality massages, facials and waxing. Swedish, shiatsu, aromatherapy, reiki and reflexology massages are offered; note that most of Avalon's massage therapists are male, so if you have a preference, ask.
