I hate to admit it, but I am not a San Diegan by birth. I was actually born and raised in Ohio, but I escaped. Last summer when I went to visit my family on vacation, we met some friends at one of our old hangouts, Kepner's. We had a blast. Kepner's has a burger called a "Garbage Burger" which is basically a burger with every possible thing on it you can think of. It's hard to pick up and falls apart in your hand, but it sure is yummy. They had an outdoor karaoke party going on the back patio with pitchers of beers and bad 70's tunes ringing out, but being Ohio, it started pouring down rain and they had to unplug the karaoke and we all ran inside to avoid being electrocuted. But thankfully before the sad wet end of our evening, I got to wail Hopelessly Devoted to You by Olivia Newton John, swig back a few beers, and eat myself a divine garbage burger.

I used to live in Ocean Beach (OB to the initiated) and didn't cook much because we could easily walk to 20 cheap dining establishments. Why exert effort when someone else will cook and you get to walk on the beach on your way to dinner? One of our favorites was the O.B. Pier Cafe which is the big white building at the end of the OB Pier that has giant blue lettering reading "CAFE" painted on the side. You can't miss it, as if you pass it, you'll end up in the ocean. When you order the Nachos Supreme you get a giant plate of chips smothered in a bath of processed nacho cheese sauce, and giant juicy hunks of pot roast and some tomatoes and cilantro and sour cream. It's one of the reasons I am so fat, I'd say off hand. This is not health food, nor anything resembling health food, but it sure is yummy. Once while I was eating said nachos, a sea lion swam up next to the window and watched me eat as if he wanted a chip. I love San Diego.
On another note, there is one superb waitress there who has been serving us for years and she's about the friendliest person I've ever met - so if you go, ask for Heather. If you happen by at breakfast, the mango pancakes were my favorite before I became allergic to mangoes and my tongue swelled up to twice it's normal size. Now I get the regular pancakes and keep my tongue in tact.

When you walk in the door of the tiny Sugar Shack, you see a wall of famed former customers, like Judge Judy and Vanna White. That alone makes it worth the trip, don't you think? My girlfriends and I stumbled on this place about 5 years ago, as it's about 1/2 way between us and Disneyland, and we stop there every year now on our Annual Girls' Weekend. It's near the beach, so a lot of the clientรจle come in with surfboards and still in drippy wet suits, which adds to the ambiance. I suppose I should get to the food. Standard breakfast fare, great pancakes and bacon, and even a vegetarian omelet for non-meat- eaters in the group. If you're in the area, give it a try. And tell Vanna hi for me.

If you go to the Beach House *right* after work, (assuming you work in North County), this is a great place to have a drink and a fish taco with the gang. The outdoor patio seating has the waves crashing up beside you, and the food is reasonable and yummy. They have free valet parking, which seems like a boon until you realize this is because they have no parking and they are going to park your car someplace in a beach zone where it comes back to you covered in seaweed. However, if you hang around for sunset, you won't notice it until morning. A romantic feel, nice music, a good all around experience.

There is always a wait here. Once you get inside, it's always loud. The reason I put up with those two things and keep going back is that they have stuff on the menu like "Beef Stroganoff Omelet" which comes to your table and on plates that looks like the ones Fred Flintstone used to get that tipped his car over. Lots of food, many unique and unusual choices of omelets, and hey, it's a short jaunt to the beach when you're finished to walk it off.

When I moved to San Diego from Akron Ohio in 1997, I had a serious shock at my first Chinese restaurant. Apparently, the egg rolls they serve in Ohio, which are dripping with grease and bean burrito sized are NOT the kind of egg rolls they make in California, a place that has an actual Chinese population. So, if you enjoy the thin crunchy authentic Chinese egg rolls, and not the massive greasy Akron Ohio egg rolls, China China is your place. Good food and friendly service. A good value for the amount of food you get, 3 of us went to dinner last week, and took home our leftovers, and the next night, 4 of us ate leftovers and had plenty..

If you have read more than one review of mine, you'll see that cheese is a big deal. I like melted cheese on just about anything. Even vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower become imminently more edible when slathered in cheese. But, I digress. La Bella's has great food at prices a whole family can afford without taking out a 2nd mortgage. The Baked Manicotti is one of my favorites, manicotti stuffed with ricotta, bathed in zesty tomato sauce, then baked covered in a sea of mozzarella cheese which bakes up all crispy and gooey and delicious. Add a meatball the size of a softball, some garlic bread, and a side salad, and it will only set you back $5.50 for a great and filling meal. Big open rooms with big tables - great for groups or families. A friendly family owned place which has been around for about 40 years. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out.

Kono's is on the beach and on any give Saturday morning, you can go and find a giant line winding down the road in front of Kono's. There ARE other places to eat, even on the same street, but why? Kono's has outdoor dining, ocean views, and a ton of food for a low price. And it's GOOD food. The breakfast special plates and the breakfast burritos are all massive and all the plates come with "Kono's Potatoes" which are home fries with green peppers and onions and cheddar cheese melted into them, which are supreme. Pancakes, eggs, bacon - usual breakfast fare, but with an ocean view and for 5 bucks. Besides, there is a crazy dude who roller blades around the beach boardwalk naked every weekend save for some themed costume - like on Kentucky Derby Saturday he had a horse tail glued to his butt and a furry pouch covering his...you know. And on St. Patrick's Day, he had shamrocks on his cheeks and a leprechaun on his...you know. You can't beat the ambiance of the beach and the naked freak. You can't beat the potatoes. Eat here.

If I was independently wealthy, I would go in Starbucks every day and just sit there. That would be a fine life. The coffee is fabulous - I order the same thing almost every day "Venti Iced Cafe Americano with Sugar Free Vanilla w/ Room." and every day I take the first sip, it's like the BEST thing I have ever had in my mouth. The employees know me by name and are happy when I come in- I'm like the "Norm" of Starbucks, I guess. They play wonderfully funky and eclectic music, some classics I have heard a million times and some brand new stuff they help me discover. When I am hungry, there are Pumpkin Scones and Low-Fat Apricot Blueberry Muffins, both of which make me very happy. The outdoor patio and Sun Access is great for cool days, and when it's too hot, they have nice cushy easy chairs in the back where you can lounge and visit and drink coffee in a delightful atmosphere. I go here every day, and sometimes twice. It's like Coffee Mecca.

What a find. My trusty Schnoodle Rex is 12 and has been groomed by many people and all over the country, but Maggie's Farm is the A # 1 place. First, as the "natural" in the title implies, she uses organic things on my dog rather than chemicals. She cuts him perfectly and puts season appropriate bandannas on him, and at Christmas last year she made a little wooden bone Christmas ornament with his name on it, which made me giddy. One time I had an appointment but didn't have a car that day and she actually gave my dog a ride - which was extra special wonderful and nice (although we DID live on the same street, not trying to trick anyone into thinking she has Doggie Limo service.) Bottom line, I feel safe leaving my dog with her and when I come back, he's licking her face and isn't skittish or fearful. Face licking is the stamp of approval as all dog owners know.
