great delivery concept, horrible reality 6/23/2009

They have a great idea - you call in an order for groceries, they shop for you and deliver to you. Problem is, they can't seem to get it right. Ever. The orders are often filled out incompletely or incorrectly, or the person taking the order actually FORGETS to print it out so someone can actually fill it! When I have ordered groceries, it usually takes at least an hour, unless they forget to fill the order and I call back. Then it takes at least 2 hours. Why they can't fix the system and get it right is beyond me. more

Great addition to Park Slope 12/14/2005

This is a welcome addition to Park Slope - a small market devoted to upscale and gourmet items, with a real emphasis on quality. I find all their departments to be very good - the cheeses, produce, meat and fish, pasta, etc. Also, a small but very well selected bread section that features breads from some of the best bakeries in NY. The downside of course, is the price. It's not as bad as going to Dean & DeLuca (which I think is generally overpriced), but it is one of the priciest places to shop in the Slope. I also don't like the stroller gridlock that happens at times, but hey, this is Park Slope. more

The inevitable product of gentrification 9/18/2005

OK, so Whole Foods hasn't arrived yet, and it's "Park Slope" location is gonna be 3rd Avenue, which is actually Gowanus, so the much smaller Union Market has stepped into that niche. It's just down the block from the venerable Park Slope Food Coop, which has better prices and more selection, but the market seems busy enough, which suggests that there are lots of people who aren't coop members, and maybe even coop members don't always want to brave the lines. The quality is good and the prices are, as expected, not cheap, but you're not in the bodega that once occupied the space either. more

pricey gourmet foods 9/1/2005

I was excited at the prospect of a gourmet foods store in the neighborhood, but have been largely disappointed by Union Market. Most of their stock is standard health food store fare that I will continue to buy from Back to the Land. What they offer that is unique is the selection of fresh breads, a large selection of Hale and Hearty Soups, and an Italian gelato/sorbet stand. They have some prepared foods by the pound, but from what I have tried, they aren't very good. Many of the dishes are spiced only with hot pepper flakes and taste like fire and not anything else. more

fresh gourmet foods, expensive 8/19/2005

I was excited when this new local market opened up next to the food coop, hoping that it would be like a local whole foods. They do have a nice selection of cheeses, but I find that they are bit too pricy. Also, their prepared foods selection is a bit limited. more
