Sahadi's has a terrific selection of cheeses, olives, bread, and Middle Eastern specialities, not to mention a good array of gourmet grocery items. The place is superfriendly--this is the anchor of the longstanding Middle Eastern shopping strip that is a border between Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill. And the prices, of course, are much better than what you'd find in Manhattan.

with Landi's tomato basil sauce...not to mention tons of their entrees, fresh sausage and grated parmigianno reggiano cheese! It's just the best authentic taste I can get so far from my Italian family...

This cute little store has a good selection of beers from microbreweries (and only microbreweries), both domestic and foreign. Some beers seem to tend to run out quickly, so if you see something you want, buy it. Across from the beer cooler wall is a wall of gourmet packaged foods from various countries, including rainbow striped pasta and different kids of hot sauce. Up front, there are fancy chocolates, cookies and candies. I enjoy the atmosphere of this store and the selection of international goodies that you don't see everday.

More
Second Helpings has a varied menu of sandwiches (on wheat or spelt bread), wraps, soups, entrées, juices, baked goods and desserts for vegetarians, vegans and non-vegetarians. Most of the staff is knowledgeable about ingredients and preparation, and can tell you what's vegan, dairy-free, wheat-free, gluten-free, etc.; however, it would help if the dishes were better labeled in this regard.
The food usually seems quite fresh, but I suspect some of the entrées and sides occasionally appear for more than one day. If not, it sometimes looks that way.
The staff has been consistently friendly and helpful over the years. Service is only slow when there's a bottleneck in the restaurant, which happens from time to time because this is a popular eatery. If you're eating in, be prepared to bus your own table.
They also offer catering and seasonal/holiday menus.
